The essays at this site range from the fully annotated and technical to more informal and discursive discussions, often written for undergraduate classes. Many items therefore should be intelligible to those not familiar with all the arcana of academic philosophy. Such a range of submissions is acceptable and desired, since the trend, by which academic philosophy has obscured and esotericized itself, and mostly dropped out of popular and literate culture, should be resisted. Current Research
Here are some of the issues I am currently thinking about:
  • The relation between being justified and being able to justify one's beliefs. A "localist" account of justification, which holds (very roughly) that being justified is a matter of being able to draw upon one's background beliefs in appropriate ways to provide an adequate defense of believing as one does. The question of whether inferential justification requires belief (or justified belief) that the justifying reason is a good one and whether any unwelcome consequences would follow if it does. The epistemic basing relation: What is involved in holding a belief for a reason? I offer an account which links basing relations to the commitments undertaken in the course of one's deliberative and justificatory activity. Knowledge through testimony: What role, if any, does trust understood as an affective attitude, not as mere reliance play in the ordinary acquisition of knowledge through testimony, and what are the consequences for epistemology if it does play an essential role? External world skepticism Fallibilism The bearing of real-world circumstances on the adequacy of epistemic reasons
There is a very large story tying together my views on all these issues, but I don't yet know how to tell it in detail.

Source The Emergence of Logical Empiricism (1996) publ. Garland Publishing Inc. The whole of Schlick selection for series is reproduced here. There is no longer any doubt nowadays, that theoretical philosophy has standing only in close connection with the sciences, whether it seeks in them a basis on which it attempts to build further, or whether they form for it merely the subject-matter of its own analyses, whereby it then makes individual inquiry into the first principles of knowledge. This is very much the case if, as I believe, philosophy can be nothing else whatever but the activity whereby we clarify all our concepts. And it is also beyond doubt that, of all the sciences, physics here stands at the forefront. Physics, that is, occupies an exceptional position, because in it two elements are united, which are only found separately in the other sciences: in the first place its exactness, the quantitative determinacy of its laws, whereby it differs from all other factual sciences, more particularly the historical sciences; and secondly the fact that it has as its subject-matter the real

Life The theory of relativity and a priori knowledge , in which Reichenbach criticized Kantian theory of synthetic a priori. In the following years he published three books on the philosophical meaning of the theory of relativity: Axiomatization of the theory of relativity From Copernicus to Einstein (1927) and The philosophy of space and time (1928); the last in a sense states logical positivism's view on the theory of relativity. In 1926 Reichenbach became a professor of philosophy of physics at the University at Berlin. His methods of teaching philosophy were something of a novelty; students found him easy to approach (this fact was uncommon in German universities); his courses were open to discussion and debate. In 1928 he founded the Berlin circle (named Die Gesellschaft fur empirische Philosophie, "Society for empirical philosophy"). Among the members of the Berlin circle were Carl Gustav Hempel, Richard von Mises, David Hilbert and Kurt Grelling. In 1930 Reichenbach and Carnap undertook the editorship of the journal Erkenntnis ("Knowledge").

53. Al-Farabi, Abu Nasr (c.870-950)
Article discussing his life and teachings on metaphysics, epistemology and politics.
http://www.muslimphilosophy.com/ip/rep/H021.htm
al-Farabi, Abu Nasr ( c.
Al-Farabi was known to the Arabs as the 'Second Master' (after Aristotle), and with good reason. It is unfortunate that his name has been overshadowed by those of later philosophers such as Ibn Sina, for al-Farabi was one of the world's great philosophers and much more original than many of his Islamic successors. A philosopher, logician and musician, he was also a major political scientist. Al-Farabi has left us no autobiography and consequently, relatively little is known for certain about his life. His philosophical legacy, however, is large. In the arena of metaphysics he has been designated the 'Father of Islamic Neoplatonism', and while he was also saturated with Aristotelianism and certainly deploys the vocabulary of Aristotle, it is this Neoplatonic dimension which dominates much of his corpus. This is apparent in his most famous work, al-Madina al-fadila (The Virtuous City) which, far from being a copy or a clone of Plato's Republic , is imbued with the Neoplatonic concept of God. Of course, al-Madina al-fadila has undeniable Platonic elements but its theology, as opposed to its politics, places it outside the mainstream of pure Platonism.

Genetic Epistemology
Source Genetic Epistemology , a series of lectures delivered by Piaget at Columbia University, Published byColumbia Univesity Press, translated by Eleanor Duckworth. First lecture reproduced here.
GENETIC EPISTEMOLOGY attempts to explain knowledge, and in particular scientific knowledge, on the basis of its history, its sociogenesis, and especially the psychological origins of the notions and operations upon which it is based. These notions and operations are drawn in large part from common sense, so that their origins can shed light on their significance as knowledge of a somewhat higher level. But genetic epistemology also takes into account, wherever possible, formalisation - in particular, logical formalisations applied to equilibrated thought structures and in certain cases to transformations from one level to another in the development of thought. The description that I have given of the nature of genetic epistemology runs into a major problem, namely, the traditional philosophical view of epistemology. For many philosophers and epistemologists, epistemology is the study of knowledge as it exists at the present moment; it is the analysis of knowledge for its own sake and within its own framework without regard for its development. For these persons, tracing the development of ideas or the development of operations may be of interest to historians or to psychologists but is of no direct concern to epistemologists. This is the major objection to the discipline of genetic epistemology, which I have outlined here.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
My greatest intellectual debt is to my adviser, Richard Rorty, both for originally introducing me to Sellars' philosophy in a way which stimulated me to persevere in the face of the initial difficulty and obscurity of Sellars' writings, and for much indispensable advice and encouragement in connection with the present essay. My second reader, Gilbert Harman, provided many thoughtful and challenging remarks and suggestions. I have discussed almost every part of the essay at length with my friends Carolyn Magid and Alexander Nehamas. Their invariably penetrating questions and objections very often forced me to revise and clarify my views on the issues discussed herein, and thus greatly increased the adequacy of the final product. Mrs. A. W. Gertzel deserves thanks for her careful typing of the final copy.

Background: The New Consideration of Nature
The Renaissance, as an age of transition, was not conducive to the building of great philosophical systems. It contained, in germinal form, the directive ideas of modern times, but under the guise of the past. Thinkers preferred to write in ancient Latin, and the style of their writing is also archaic. Under this external aspect, which smacks of antiquity, are hidden the signs of the next age. The greatest representatives of thought, in the order of time, are Nicholas of Cusa

, knowledge, science, and , speech, thought, discourse). Epistemology, in a most general way, is that branch of philosophy which is concerned with the value of human knowledge The name epistemology, is of recent origin, but especially since the publication of Ferrier's "Institutes of Metaphysics: the Theory of Knowing and Being" (1854), it has come to be used currently instead of other terms, still sometimes met with, like applied logic, material or critical logic, critical or initial philosophy, etc. To the same part of philosophy the name criteriology is given by the authors of some Latin textbooks and by the Louvain School. The exact province of epistemology is as yet but imperfectly determined, the two main views corresponding to the two meanings of the Greek word Here we shall consider epistemology in its first and broader meaning, which is the usual one in English, as applying to the theory of knowledge, the German Erkenntnistheorie, HISTORICAL OUTLINE The first efforts of Greek thinkers centre around the study of nature. This early philosophy is almost exclusively objective, and supposes, without examining it, the validity of knowledge. Doubt arose later chiefly from the disagreement of philosophers in determining the primordial elements of matter and in discussing the nature and attributes of reality. Parmenides holds that it is unchangeable; Heraclitus, that it is constantly changing; Democritus endows it with an eternal inherent motion, while Anaxagoras requires an independent and intelligent motor. This led the Sophists to question the possibility of
