Overview
Seizures and Epilepsy

Epilepsy
One of the Nation’s Most Common Disabling Neurological Disorders
Epilepsy is a general term that includes various types of seizures. People with diagnosed epilepsy have had more than one seizure, and they may have had more than one kind of seizure. A seizure happens when abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes an involuntary change in body movement or function, sensation, awareness, or behavior. Epilepsy and seizures affect about 2.3 million Americans, and result in an estimated annual cost of $12.5 billion in medical costs and lost or reduced earnings and production. People of all ages are affected, but particularly the very young and the elderly. About 10% of Americans will experience a seizure, and about 3% will have or will have had a diagnosis of epilepsy by age 80. Living Well with Epilepsy, the first national conference on public health and epilepsy, convened in September 1997. The conference was cosponsored by CDC, the American Epilepsy Society, the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, and the Epilepsy Foundation. The conference cosponsors sought to

Lecpcg Steering committee thank you for visiting the LECPCG web site, and hope that it provides a useful source of information for parents and carers alike. WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT... DR. ANDREW HOLTON... IS BACK TO WORK !!! On Wednesday 29th October 2003, the GMC panel met and REMOVED ALL RESTRICTIONS on Dr Holton. This means that he is now able to practice again in any area of medicine - including Paediatric Neurology ? This is a DISGRACE - and an INSULT to all those children who suffered at his hands. We are told that Dr. Holton no longer works for the Trust. He is now employed elsewhere . As if this is some sort of vindication for their actions. This does NOTHING to PROTECT CHILDREN. Who in their right mind would employ a man with such a record ? He has cost children their childhoods and the NHS millions of pounds, in drugs, in investigations and in likely future compensation. It is SHAME on the GMC and SHAME on the TRUST for being party to the conspiracy which led us to this point.

National epilepsy Association of Aust Inc. FAQ.
http://www.nevdgp.org.au/geninf/epilepsyf/WOMEN_EPILEPSY.htm
Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria Inc. WOMEN AND EPILEPSY Women with epilepsy have many questions about epilepsy and their own health, pregnancy, and the well being of their future children. The following will help to provide general information and make it easier to ask questions when visiting your family doctor, neurologist, gynaecologist or obstetrician. Epilepsy at the time of menstruation is known as catamenial epilepsy. For some women seizure frequency may increase at the time of menstruation and, in others, seizures occur only at this time. The reason is uncertain, but it is thought that changes in hormone levels and anti-epileptic medication levels, fluid retention and possibly pre-menstrual tension may be the cause. Keeping a record of seizures may help identify a relationship between seizure frequency and menstruation and assist your doctor in formulating a suitable treatment plan. ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE PILL There is no evidence to suggest that the contraceptive pill can influence epilepsy in any way, either reducing or increasing seizure frequency. Generally, the main concern women with epilepsy have is the effectiveness of oral contraception in preventing conception. Some medications for epilepsy can reduce the effectiveness of the pill, leading to possible 'pill failure' and pregnancy. Breakthrough bleeding may also occur. These problems may be overcome by using a higher dose pill.

Feline Seizures and Epilepsy
The intent of this page is to provide information for people whose cats have had seizures. Seizures are a serious problem, and a cat that has had a seizure should be taken to a veterinarian for proper diagnosis. A proper diagnosis may be expensive and may take some time, but there is usually an underlying cause that can be eliminated or appropriate treatment that can be prescribed. The information in this page is not meant to substitute for a veterinarian's advice, but to aid those who are trying to learn more about their cat's illness and to encourage owners of cats that have had seizures to have their cat's illness diagnosed as quickly as possible. More clinical information is available through the references at the bottom of this article. Note that this page is maintained at infrequent intervals. There are a number of URLs at the bottom of the page that may offer more helpful advice, including internet support groups. I welcome email suggesting updates to the page, but it may be some time before they are acted on.

Epilepsy Unit
Introduction
The Epilepsy Unit is situated in the grounds of the Western Infirmary in the west end of Glasgow. It is affiliated to the North Glasgow Hospitals University NHS Trust and to the University of Glasgow. Its aims and objectives are to provide a specialist clinical service for patients with suspected and established seizure disorders, to undertake research into the causation of epilepsy and its pharmacological management, to explore the tissue and cellular effects of new and established anticonvulsant drugs singly and in combination, and to train doctors, nurses and scientists in the clinical and basic aspects of the neuropharmacology and therapeutics of epilepsy. It contains patient and research laboratories, a cognitive function suite, an EEG unit, a secure facility for the storage of drugs, staff offices, and waiting and seminar rooms. The Epilepsy Unit is a member of the Joint Epilepsy Council for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Epilepsy Service
The epilepsy clinical service was set up at the Western Infirmary in 1984. Referrals have increased in number each year. Patients currently attending the service are aged 11 to 90. More than 80% come from their general practitioners with the majority of the remainder being tertiary referrals from other hospital clinics. Special programmes have been set up for teenagers, the elderly, first seizures, patients with refractory epilepsy and those with learning disabilities. A review service provides specialist assessment for patients who merit reconsideration of diagnosis, investigation or treatment. An epilepsy motherhood programme is also offered. Inpatients are accommodated in the wards of the University Division of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences. The clinical service fulfils all criteria recommended in the SIGN guideline ‘Diagnosis and Management of Epilepsy in Adults’.

Definition
According to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, epilepsy is a physical condition that occurs when there is a sudden, brief change in how the brain works. When brain cells are not working properly, a person's consciousness, movement, or actions may be altered for a short time. These physical changes are called epileptic seizures. Epilepsy is therefore sometimes called a seizure disorder. Epilepsy affects people in all nations and of all races.
Some people can experience a seizure and not have epilepsy. For example, many young children have convulsions from fevers. These febrile convulsions are one type of seizure. Other types of seizures not classified as epilepsy include those caused by an imbalance of body fluids or chemicals or by alcohol or drug withdrawal. A single seizure does not mean that the person has epilepsy. Back to top
Incidence
About two million Americans have epilepsy; of the 125,000 new cases that develop each year, up to 50% are in children and adolescents.

The story so far: FOLKS was established following several years of hard work and dedication by its founder member, Vicki Horsewell. Vicki established the Landau Kleffner UK Parent Support Group with the assistance of the UK national charity Contact-a-Family , which seeks to support families of children with rare conditions by putting them in touch with other similarly affected families. After two years it become clear that the number of families of children with LKS or related conditions in the UK has risen to mean that a national group centred around these children's needs was possible. Therefore a group of concerned parents and professionals, who had been involved in the support group, formally asked the Charity Commission to register FOLKS as a national charity for children with LKS. The Parent Support Group was then registered as a charity in its own right under the name FOLKS in November 1996.
