People with diagnosed epilepsy have had more than one seizure, and they may have had more than one kind of seizure. A seizure happens when abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes an involuntary change in body movement or function, sensation, awareness, or behavior. Epilepsy and seizures affect about 2.3 million Americans, and result in an estimated annual cost of $12.5 billion in medical costs and lost or reduced earnings and production. People of all ages are affected, but particularly the very young and the elderly. Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria Inc. WOMEN AND EPILEPSY Women with epilepsy have many questions about epilepsy and their own health, pregnancy, and the well being of their future children. The following will help to provide general information and make it easier to ask questions when visiting your family doctor, neurologist, gynaecologist or obstetrician. Epilepsy at the time of menstruation is known as catamenial epilepsy. For some women seizure frequency may increase at the time of menstruation and, in others, seizures occur only at this time. The reason is uncertain, but it is thought that changes in hormone levels and anti-epileptic medication levels, fluid retention and possibly pre-menstrual tension may be the cause. Keeping a record of seizures may help identify a relationship between seizure frequency and menstruation and assist your doctor in formulating a suitable treatment plan. ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE PILL There is no evidence to suggest that the contraceptive pill can influence epilepsy in any way, either reducing or increasing seizure frequency. Generally, the main concern women with epilepsy have is the effectiveness of oral contraception in preventing conception. Some medications for epilepsy can reduce the effectiveness of the pill, leading to possible 'pill failure' and pregnancy. Breakthrough bleeding may also occur. These problems may be overcome by using a higher dose pill.

Epilepsy Unit Introduction The Epilepsy Unit is situated in the grounds of the Western Infirmary in the west end of Glasgow. It is affiliated to the North Glasgow Hospitals University NHS Trust and to the University of Glasgow. Its aims and objectives are to provide a specialist clinical service for patients with suspected and established seizure disorders, to undertake research into the causation of epilepsy and its pharmacological management, to explore the tissue and cellular effects of new and established anticonvulsant drugs singly and in combination, and to train doctors, nurses and scientists in the clinical and basic aspects of the neuropharmacology and therapeutics of epilepsy. It contains patient and research laboratories, a cognitive function suite, an EEG unit, a secure facility for the storage of drugs, staff offices, and waiting and seminar rooms. The Epilepsy Unit is a member of the Joint Epilepsy Council for the United Kingdom and Ireland. Epilepsy Service The epilepsy clinical service was set up at the Western Infirmary in 1984. Referrals have increased in number each year. Patients currently attending the service are aged 11 to 90. More than 80% come from their general practitioners with the majority of the remainder being tertiary referrals from other hospital clinics. Special programmes have been set up for teenagers, the elderly, first seizures, patients with refractory epilepsy and those with learning disabilities. A review service provides specialist assessment for patients who merit reconsideration of diagnosis, investigation or treatment. An epilepsy motherhood programme is also offered. Inpatients are accommodated in the wards of the University Division of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences. The clinical service fulfils all criteria recommended in the SIGN guideline ‘Diagnosis and Management of Epilepsy in Adults’.

Vicki established the Landau Kleffner UK Parent Support Group with the assistance of the UK national charity Contact-a-Family , which seeks to support families of children with rare conditions by putting them in touch with other similarly affected families. After two years it become clear that the number of families of children with LKS or related conditions in the UK has risen to mean that a national group centred around these children's needs was possible. Therefore a group of concerned parents and professionals, who had been involved in the support group, formally asked the Charity Commission to register FOLKS as a national charity for children with LKS.
