Homepage Who we are What can go wrong What we do ... Contact us What is Corporate Responsibility? The term is shorthand for a range of interacting issues covering Health and Safety, Ethics, Environment, Community and Staff. Whilst the terminology is new, the issues are not, and many companies are already addressing them. However, the critical point is the manner in which the issues interact and in particular how investment in these areas is traded off against profit. Why is it becoming more important? What should companies be doing? Companies should be looking critically at the CR issues which are material for their business, developing appropriate programmes and reporting on progress. They should be resisting pressures for disclosure on immaterial issues and ensuring that policies, public statements and actions are consistent.

Environment
Concern for the environment is viewed by many as a rich-country luxury. It is not. Natural and man-made environmental resources - fresh water, clean air, forests, grasslands, marine resources, and agro-ecosystems - provide sustenance and a foundation for social and economic development. Today, the World Bank is one of the key promoters and financiers of environmental upgrading in the developing world.
In 2001, the World Bank Board of Directors endorsed an Environment Strategy to guide the Bank's actions in the environment area, particularly over the next five years. The Strategy emphasizes three objectives:
  • improving the quality of life
  • improving the quality of growth
  • protecting the quality of the regional and global commons
It recognizes that sustainable development, which balances economic development, social cohesion, and environmental protection, is fundamental to the World Bank's core objective of lasting poverty alleviation.

Main Gardening htmlAdWH('7002588', '234', '60'); American Nature Study Society Leading the Way to the Future Through Environmental Education A Key to the Future The future of America and humanity rest upon the bedrock of the natural world. The experience and understanding of that world are foundations for environmental literacy and wise decision-making about many critical problems. Yet, in our increasingly urbanized society, opportunities for this experience are fewer and fewer. Nature Study provides ways to forge a bond between each generation of students and their environment. ANSS members are a critical part of this solution. A Proud Heritage Founded in 1908, ANSS quickly became the leading organization serving and strengthening the Nature Study movement. For nearly 90 years, ANSS has served the professional needs of countless educators with workshops, publications, field trips, and conferences. Our past presidents include the outstanding leaders in our field- Liberty Hyde Bailey, Anna Botsford Comstock, Cap'n Bill Vinal, E. Laurence Palmer, Roger Tory Peterson, Edwin Way Teale, and Helen Ross Russell ANSS is America's oldest environmental education organization National and International Partnerships ANSS is affiliated with the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Alliance for Environmental Education (AEE), International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), and the Canadian Nature Federation (CNF). Western States Legal Foundation (WSLF) is a non-profit, public interest organization founded in 1982, which monitors and analyzes U.S. nuclear weapons programs and policies and related high technology energy and weapons programs, with a focus on the national nuclear weapons laboratories. WSLF recognizes that nuclear weapons affect the environment, the economy, the role of violence in society, and democracy itself. Rather than enhancing our "national" security, nuclear weapons threaten our fundamental human security. WSLF seeks to abolish nuclear weapons, compel open public environmental review of nuclear technologies, and ensure appropriate management of nuclear waste. Grounded in nonviolence and rooted in both international and environmental law, the principle guiding WSLF's activities is democratization of decision making affecting nuclear weapons and related technologies.
Program areas:
  • Research and analysis on current U.S. nuclear weapons policies, ongoing nuclear weapons research, testing, and production activities, and their impacts on international security.
