The scholarly focus of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is the interplay between humankind and the physical, chemical, and biological processes, and other species that regulate the function of both natural and engineered environments. We describe environmental processes to understand their effects upon humankind and consider the reciprocal effects of human activities on these processes. The overall goal of our inquiry is the development of explanatory and predictive capacities for assessing and mitigating consequences to human health or the environment through alternative societal actions and policies.
