California's New Academy of Sciences
by Dr. Patrick Kociolek, Executive Director
California Academy of Sciences
"Through very thoughtful design and careful integration of systems, the new Academy will achieve a high level of performance without costing any more to build than a standard building."
Plans for the new Academy began as a response to damage caused by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. But as we talked to people about our facility, programs, and exhibits, we realized we faced a much bigger challenge than patching leaky roofs and making our facility seismically safe. Science and environmental research are going through a revolution. People feel they are losing ground in understanding science and scientific advances. As the Academy marks our 150th anniversary, I can't imagine a more critical time for our institution to help address the challenges of a changing world.
As we began our planning process, we talked with officials at more than a dozen natural history museums undergoing renovation or expansion projects. Fueled by the rapid growth of biodiversity and conservation issues and a burgeoning of science-based industries, awareness is growing about the crucial role science museums play in education and environmental conservation. We learned that to excite visitors about science requires a different approach than the static, Victorian-era model used by most of the world's natural history museums.

Frequently Asked Questions about Environmental Art and greenmuseum.org
Where is greenmuseum.org?
Our office is in Corte Madera, California, but we are an online museum. We do not have a museum building filled with artwork. We see ourselves as a traditional museum turned inside out. Instead of visiting one big box filled with art we are many tiny boxes (monitors) directing our visitors out and into the world to visit outdoor environmental artworks first hand.
Our address : greenmuseum.org, 518 Tamalpais Dr., Corte Madera, CA, 94925, USA. So, where's the art?
Information about the artworks in greenmuseum.org can be found in the Artist Section . The artworks themselves are scattered around the world. Many of them were temporary artworks and no longer exist. Some environmental art can be visited and we are collecting Trip Reports. These provide directions and commentary about the artworks. (Insert name here) is an environmental artist. How come they aren't in the Artist Section?
We are continually adding new information to the Artist Section. There are hundreds of artists that we have not yet included because we either do not have their contact information, haven't heard of them yet, or simply haven't had time to input all their information. If you know someone who should be included and have their contact information please contact us.

Environmental and Conservation Programs (ECP) was established in 1994 to direct The Field Museum's collections, scientific research, and educational resources to the immediate needs of conservation at local, national, and international levels. ECP is the branch of the Museum fully dedicated to translating science into action that creates and supports lasting conservation. Through partnerships with research institutions, conservation organizations, local communities, and government agencies, ECP catalyzes science-based action for conservation.
    Calumet Stewardship Day 2004
On May 26, 2004 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., over 900 students (grades 3-12) from the Calumet region participated in the second annual Calumet Stewardship Day. The event engaged local students in hands-on education and restoration stations at three sites: Wolf Lake, Eggers Woods, and Powderhorn Lake. Stewardship work included releasing Galerucella beetles on the invasive purple loosestrife plant, removing garlic mustard and maintenance of tree nursery planted at last year's event. Local organizations from the Calumet region, government agency representatives and others led the hands-on education and restoration activity stations. The Field Museum hosted three education stations highlighting aquatic invertebrates, preparation of plant specimens and education programs.
