Statement of Purpose:
Founded in 1857, the Chicago Academy of Sciences was Chicago's first museum and natural science research organization. Dedicated to its mission of achieving scientific literacy for all citizens, the academy is particularly know for its cutting-edge science education and global research programs. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, a state-of-the-art environmental museum, opened in October 1999. The museum explores the biodiversity of the Midwest through exhibitions and encourages visitors to take a closer look at their environment and help them connect with science and the natural world through interactive activities.
Highlights:
Exhibits at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum share a common philosophythat people learn best by questioning, sharing, discussing, and doing. Each exhibit presents a host of intriguing situations which challenge visitors to connect with science and the natural world.
Exhibits:
The Museum's permanent exhibits are: Judy Istock Butterfly Haven What is the difference between a moth and a monarch? What do butterflies eat? You will find the answers to these questions and more in the 2,700 square foot Judy Istock Butterfly Haven that includes a 28-foot tall greenhouse aflutter with live butterflies and moths! Visit over 500 butterflies representing over a dozen species native to the Midwest. Adjacent to the greenhouse are interactive graphics that encourage visitors to learn about the lifecycles, migration, and behavior of one of nature's most magical creatures. In addition, the Museum is home to the only breeding lab of its kind in North America.

Collection Environment
... Materials Properties Collection Environment The environment (temperature, relative humidity, air quality and light levels) in the exhibition galleries and storage areas has a very important effect on the long term preservation of objects in museum collections. Many organic (and also some inorganic) materials are quite sensitive to light - both in the ultraviolet and visible ranges - and will suffer degradation from photochemical reactions. For example, the colors of many textile dyestuffs, as well as paint pigments, will fade and change as a result of such effects. Air pollutants will also cause chemical changes in sensitive materials. We can prevent and minimize many of these effects by keeping the storage areas dark, exhibit light levels carefully controlled, and the air in all collection areas clean. What we need to know, in order to design and maintain efficient and cost effective climate control systems, is what the allowable limits are within we must maintain the museum environment to prevent damage to occur. SCMRE researchers have focused on these questions, and developed a far better quantitative understanding of the issues than existed previously. Using an extensive database of mechanical properties of materials (strength, elasticity, etc.), measured under various conditions and as affected by aging processes, in combination with sophisticated computer-based models, they are able to define environmental "envelopes" that represent the optimal conditions in which to safely preserve the collections in museums nationwide.

After more than three decades of air quality regulation in the U.S., the easiest and least expensive pollution reductions may have already been achieved. In this increasingly challenging field, BBC works with regulators, regulated industries, and environmental interests to help assess new air quality improvement strategies. Our work ranges from investigating impacts of new regulations on small businesses in the Los Angeles Basin to examining the merits of incentive-based approaches in the Southern Appalachian region. Our goal is to bring more clarity to potentially contentious issues through sound, objective research. BBC's work varies from benefit-cost and impact assessments to development of analytical tools for clients' ongoing use. We also helped develop one of the first metropolitan visibility indices based on scientific research into the public's perceptions and preferences. http://www.oas.org/culture/series4_f.html
THE ROLE OF MUSEUMS AND HERITAGE INSTITUTIONS IN THE PROMOTION AND PRESERVATION OF THE CULTURAL PATRIMONY PROTECTION OF CULTURAL PROPERTY Museums, Tourism and Sustainability. These institutions have the ability to lobby, inform and advise governments on relevant issues, while at the same time educating the public and implementing activities at the grassroots level. Effective distribution of available information has been a key problem in this battle. However, their ability to define and articulate major concepts give museums the potential for effective input at the level of stakeholder involvement in environmental protection. Caribbean museums can also be effective facilitators to the process of building consensus on sustainability, based on a commitment to transparency and inclusiveness. Regional institutions can also provide knowledge, and deliver expertise (including the cultural and social permutations, and accessibility in its broadest context). In effect, engendering a participatory approach to managing the environment. Next...

Paleontology in Museums and Institutes in the 21st Century Douglas H. Erwin and Willi Ziegler
Origin and Historic Development In the 18th and early 19th century the public perception of earth history and biology was based on the typological-registration inventory of natural history objects then currently in vogue. These objects became known and were collected during the geographical exploration of the world during the times of Columbus, Vasco da Gama, James Cook, and others. In medieval times, natural objects were already being kept in galleries or collections that did not distinguish between natural objects and artifacts. During Renaissance time, these accumulated objects were kept in the so-called "art and wonder cabinets" and they served the continuing acquisition of knowledge in regard to the micro- and macro cosmos. Some objects from these collections were compared with their likes in a kind of playful association, and thus knowledge was gained about those deviating from the normal. It follows that each museum and each collection developed its own organization and depending on its individual history and on the time and circumstances of its founding (Ziegler, 1995, p.50). Thus, museums and collections are conditioned in their aims, their appearance; their sense of priority, their respective histories and by the local factors of the country in which they were established (Hudson, 1987, p. 83). These facts have to be taken into account in judging the future work of natural history museums, and it is hoped that they will resist any attempts at concentration, fusion or leveling.

The Child Museum
S cience, technology, imagination, truth in the past, present and future; all interact to create a wonderful world for the Egyptian child, namely, the Child Museum. It is an edifice that appeals to a child's intelligence and inquisitive nature, allowing interaction with what he sees in full freedom. Children at this museum are able to deal with high technology and modern methods to enrich their knowledge and imagination. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, the patron of Egyptian children, was the first to express the wish to establish a museum for children that ushers them into an attractive world where they are encouraged to observe, get acquainted with and discover everything new and by comparison and touch - try to find for themselves the answers to their questions. The aim of establishing a child museum is to make the child feel his/her absolute importance. Since 1985, for over ten years, specialized working groups of Egyptian and world experts in fields of science, technology, physics, history, geography, civilization, geology, architecture, engineering and arts of exhibitions have all exerted concerted efforts to create a distinguished and unique museum for the Egyptian child.
Tour of the Museum:
A child starts his tour of the museum after he receives his "passport". He sees, listens and gets acquainted with all the different aspects of life, starting with the ancient forefathers and progressing up to modern times.

The Guidelines give small museums in particular, real lower cost options to ensure their long-term viability. MEI develops systems to model and predict materials degradation and thus component life for both terrestrial and aerospace applications. It has developed both models and computerised systems for life prediction of infrastructure and the impact of severe events in Australia and throughout South East Asia.
