About Us News Feedback Webcam ... Links
A mission-driven company, Environmental Media designs, produces and distributes curriculum-based media to support science and environmental education for the classroom and community. Since 1989, we have collaborated with science and education organizations to produce over 450 award winning programs and series for PTV broadcast, and use in schools, libraries, museums, nature centers, and homes. Our on-line store offers free comprehensive interactive teacher guides to support the use of our programs and series. We believe that the only environmental issue is education, and our catalog includes only curriculum-based media. Our production quality is high; our acquisition of new work selective; our low prices offer all children equity of access; and our extensive inventory of stock footage allows cost effective production services.

The Importance of the Museum Environment
One goal of every museum is to make objects accessible to the public, to researchers, and to other institutions. A second goal is to ensure the long-term safety and preservation of the collections. Objects need one set of conditions while people may need another. Achieving both seems impossible. Managing the museum environment can be difficult since it requires expertise and time. It also requires the efforts of all your staff, as well as the cooperation of the public. But a controlled environment can be achieved, even by small institutions with limited resources.
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is a frequently troublesome area of preservation. Architects often fail to understand the importance of a preservation quality HVAC system, instead specifying units that are better suited to commercial construction. Museum curators often don't know how to describe correctly what it is they need, or what the problems are with the current system. Museum directors and their boards are sometimes not convinced that controlling the environment is all that important. And preservationists often fail to allow any latitude in the development of an affordable preservation quality environment. Figure Omitted Condensation on the inside of windows suggests a potentially serious problem with the institution's relative humidity control.

The Environmental Monitoring Kit program address the conservation needs of small museums by giving them the ability to monitor their gallery and storage environments. By sharing equipment and training resources, small museums will have access to important equipment and valuable training at a very low cost.
This project was conceived of by members of the Texas museum community and organized by the Texas Association of Museums and the Collection Managers Committee. Made possible by a generous grant from the Meadows Foundation. 3939 Bee Caves Road

Holly Hayes is the definitive home for wildlife records locally and is recognised as a national model for Biological Records. The Centre acts as a Wildlife Information Service and produces a range of wildlife and countryside surveys. The Centre's staff work with local communities and receive valuable information from local recorders. The Centre is the base for the Community Heritage Initiative team. Staff at Holly Hayes can also help with access to natural history collections. Access for people with disabilities is partially available, as a ramp to the house is in place. Assistance may be required for some areas of the ground floor, and the upper floors are not accessible. There are toilets and limited on-site parking.

Field Projects Education Publications and Videos ... Past Projects Pollutants in the Museum Environment (1985-1998) In 1985 the Getty Conservation Institute began researching the risks posed to museum collections by atmospheric pollutants. Initial studies focused on outdoor pollutants (nitrogen oxides, ozone and other photochemical oxidants, sulfur dioxide, and particles). Research later expanded to include indoor-generated pollutants (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and formic and acetic acids). The emphasis of research also shifted from the macroenvironment (gallery and storage spaces) to the microenvironment (display cases and storage cabinets). Studies were carried out to determine the damage gaseous pollutants cause to various types of museum objects. The Institute also studied passive sampling devices that would allow museums to conduct their own surveys with minimal cost and expertise. Through testing, a number of commercially available, relatively low-cost products were identified. Also investigated were mitigation methodologies to reduce significant indoor concentrations of pollutants. Those methods that proved effective used active filtration, passive protection, and combinations of procedures that worked along with the building's ventilation system. Related articles in

Degree of Cultural Heritage Studies - [685AA]
Degrees in Cultural Heritage Studies/Management are offered within the School of Resource, Environmental and Heritage Sciences at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The programs are ideal for students who thrive in small group learning situations, where the work is practical and directly applicable to professional employment. The sustainable management of the cultural heritage of Australia is one of the foremost concerns of our society. The Cultural Heritage Studies bachelor degree provides an interdisciplinary education for students interested in the care and management of the indigenous and historical heritage environments. In particular, attention is paid to the philosophical, historical and practical foundation of the profession. The specialisation focuses on developing personal leadership, the capacity for critical evaluation and the understanding of a professional ethic. The Cultural Heritage Management postgraduate programs offer an intensive professional education in theory and practice. It is suitable for graduates in many disciplines, especially history, archaeology, anthropology, art history, architecture and so forth, but also for people with life skills in various fields plus a passion for heritage.
