Potential Occupations Related Student Organizations More Information Are you an environmentalist at heart who would like to design systems or devices to help improve environmental quality? Would you like to devise a project to clean up polluted ground water? Is restoring the health of local ecosystems or preventing pollution something you would like to do? Would you like to monitor air, land, and water quality? Could you design a project to provide safe drinking water or waste water treatment where none exists? Would you like to develop new and improved means to protect the environment or promote conservation of natural resources? If your answer to any of these questions is "yes," then a degree in Environmental Engineering may be for you. Environmental engineers design solutions to prevent future pollution as well as to correct existing pollution problems. The curriculum is based on a strong foundation in mathematics, natural sciences, biological sciences, and engineering fundamentals. Upper-level courses address engineering applications in air, water, land pollution, and environmental toxicology in which pollution prevention and control measures are emphasized. Other topics include agricultural and environmental measurements, rate controlled separations, basic hydrology, environmental law, and environmental ethics. Careful selection of technical electives allows students to specialize in a related field of interest. Minors can be obtained in a variety of related subjects such as

Mason Laboratory 9 Hillhouse Avenue Room 307A U.S. Mail: P.O. Box 208286 New Haven, CT Engineering Environmental Undergraduate Studies Environmental engineers assess environmental problems that affect our biosphere, land, water, and air quality and develop engineering solutions to improve conditions. Environmental engineers handle concerns about drinking water safety, groundwater protection, wastewater treatment, indoor and outdoor air pollution, solid and waste disposal, and various hazards in our environment. They work on cleaning up contaminated sites and develop ways to preserve our wetlands. They also help prevent pollution by designing products and processes to do as little harm to the environment as is possible. Environmental engineers face complex and often competing technical, social, and legal issues concerning the use of environmental resources. Therefore, in addition to engineering disciplines, chemistry, biology, geology, Yale provides its environmental engineering students with an understanding of economics, policy, and management.

http://www.cmu.edu/esg-cat/cit/civile.html
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Chris T. Hendrickson, Head Office: Porter Hall 119-D http://www.ce.cmu.edu/ The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers a wide spectrum of opportunities for direct entry into the engineering profession, for graduate education in engineering, or entry into various other professions. While maintaining its emphasis on the fundamental understanding of the behavior of constructed facilities through the application of the physical sciences and mathematics, the curriculum has continually evolved in directions that exploit advances in technology. The methods of engineering design are introduced in the freshman year and are emphasized throughout the curriculum in both traditional and open-ended project-oriented courses. The basic undergraduate degree program leads to a B.S. in Civil Engineering. Students with a specific interest in Environmental Engineering are advised to undertake the Minor in Environmental Engineering. A student may choose to concentrate in one of the specialty areas in Civil Engineering, to pursue a minor in one of the CIT designated minor programs, or to design a double-major or double-degree program. The specialty areas offered by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department are described in this section. The CIT designated minor programs can be found under the Carnegie Institute of Technology section. The double-major requirements with Biomedical Engineering and with Engineering and Public Policy are described in the curriculum specified by those departments. Other double-major programs selected by recent graduates include economics, mathematics, business, architecture, history, and foreign languages. Each student should have well defined objectives in selecting courses leading to a specialty, a minor or a double major.

Environmental engineers uphold the dual goals of minimizing our impact on the local, regional, and global environment and concurrently improving our standard of living. In this role of preserving environmental and public well being, environmental engineers face unique issues and must have a strong background in the fundamental earth sciences in order to understand complex environmental problems and then pose and design appropriate engineering solutions. As problem solvers for something as diverse as "the environment," environmental engineers also need to understand the most current technologies used in practice and have a desire to maintain a high level of learning in this rapidly evolving and developing field. Civil engineers have a key role to play in addressing these issues by advancing the knowledge in such diverse areas as solid mechanics, environmental fluid dynamics, structural dynamics and adaptivity, smart materials technology, and molecular biology, among many others. Furthermore, there has been growing recognition of the value of multidisciplinary research in these areas. New findings and understanding in these areas have led to a growing awareness of the central importance of building resource-efficient structures while preserving the natural environment as humankind attempts a transition to a more sustainable relationship with the Earth and its natural resources. Advancing civil engineering, then, is both intellectually challenging and essential for sustaining and improving the quality of life. Research in the department is distributed in three major tracks: Pollution and its Remediation
