Program Administrator: Diantha Stensrud The prepares technically qualified students for responsible management roles in all phases of the development of major constructed facilities. The program emphasizes management techniques useful in planning, coordinating, and controlling the activities of diverse specialists designers, contractors, subcontractors, and client representatives within the unique project environment of the construction industry. In addition, the program offers subjects that focus on engineering aspects of heavy construction as well as building and industrial construction. By appropriate choice of elective subjects, students wishing to work for a contractor, designer firm, construction management consultant, or the construction department of an owner's organization can design a program for their needs. The Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE) , an interdisciplinary research organization with the Department of Computer Science , is directed towards the problems of the architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) industry. Our faculty and students involved in this center work on the development of computer-based tools that will permit improved integration and automation of the design and construction process.

Information on requirements to practise
The profession of engineer is regulated in Canada. It is illegal to practise the profession of engineer or to use the title "engineer" without being licensed as a full member in a provincial or territorial association. However, individuals can do engineering work under the direct supervision of licensed engineers. Provincial and territorial associations of professional engineers are responsible for setting the standards for entry into the profession and for issuing licences to those who meet established standards of qualifications and practice. Therefore, once you know where you will settle and work in Canada, you should contact the appropriate provincial or territorial association for details on licensure procedures. Below is a

The civil and environmental engineering programs at UCLA include structural engineering, structural mechanics, geotechnical engineering, earthquake engineering, water resources engineering, environmental engineering, and system analysis. The undergraduate curriculum leads to a B.S. in civil engineering, which includes a broad-based education in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, and environmental engineering. At the graduate level, M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs are offered in the areas of structures (including structural/earthquake engineering and structural mechanics), geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, and environmental engineering. In these areas, research is going forward to examine the basic physics and mechanics of structural and resource engineering, to solve critical problems in earthquake engineering, for the development of new technologies for air and soil pollution control, and for water distribution, treatment, and reclamation.

The Environmental Engineer as Forensic Expert by Anthony J. DeFalco, P.E., DEE *
Within the past 30 years there have been great changes in the environmental engineering profession. Today, perhaps, no other engineering discipline requires such broad knowledge of related areas. The important growth of knowledge in this field, however, developed over time and was acquired through various environmental campaigns waged during different time periods, waxing and waning with the intensity of regulatory enforcement and achievement of cleanup goals, respectively. To understand the forensic value of the environmental engineer, it is important to understand first how the profession metamorphosed into its present state. Engineers who have lived through these changes and who have learned from them have much to offer in the forensic field today.
The year 1972 was a pivotal year for the environmental engineering profession. That particular year, of course, marked passage of the Water Pollution Control Act (Act) which, in turn, spawned more than 23 amendments and other environmental legislation, as well, either directly or indirectly. Thus, environmental laws and their consequent regulations, after 1972, covered the air, water and soil media and specific issues related to fresh water from surface or subsurface sources, residuals and solid wastes and, of course, hazardous and toxic wastes. From an environmental engineering viewpoint, life before 1972 was considerably simpler when the emphasis was on treatment of conventional pollutants from domestic and municipal sources. These pollutants essentially comprised organic substances which depleted dissolved oxygen from our natural waterways usually resulting in a reduction in diversity of natural flora and fauna and even fish kills in isolated instances. They also included a few select dissolved inorganic substances, as well. By the early seventies, however, pollution from industries became recognized as a serious problem on a grand scale. Pollutants from the entire spectrum of American industry were more complex and, consequently, treatment methods became more sophisticated. Environmental engineering grew in its capacity to keep abreast of newer technologies and adapt existing technologies to these new challenges.

What Do Civil Engineers Do?
Civil Engineering is the father of all engineering disciplines, being that it was the first of the engineering disciplines to be recognized and developed as a field of study. Without civil engineers, we would not have homes as we know them today, we would not be able to travel far from our homes in short periods of time, and we would not be able to clean up our drinking water or our wastewater to preserve the earth.
The field of Civil Engineering encompasses planning, design, construction and maintenance of structures, which often includes altering the natural geography to meet human needs. Some of the "things" civil engineers design and build include: suspension bridges, dams, tunnels, skyscrapers, the Interstate highway system, airports, ports, shopping centers, residential developments, water delivery and purification facilities, and irrigations systems.
As a Civil Engineer, whether you work for a private engineering firm, construction firm, government agency, or industry, there are many specialty areas in which you can focus. A few of the major specialties include:

Application Information
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Davis offers a unique opportunity for advanced education in: 1) environmental quality monitoring and modeling, 2) water and wastewater treatment processes, 3) optimization of water distribution systems, 4) hazardous and solid waste management, 5) public health risk assessment, and 6) natural treatment systems leading to the degrees of Master of Science, Master of Engineering, Doctor of Philosophy, and Doctor of Engineering. Non-thesis MS degrees carefully planned with a faculty advisor can usually be completed in 1 year. Interdisciplinary problems, involving such issues as waste disposal, non-point source emissions, water / air pollution, and climate change are among the most challenging problems an engineer can face. Through training in the underlying physical, chemical, and biological principles, design of mitigation approaches, and optimal management of resources, students learn to recognize attainable alternatives and their consequences in terms of environmental quality. The environmental programs are strongly research oriented. Evaluations of various physical, chemical, and biological processes are carried out in state-of-the art laboratories and at numerous field sites. Advanced monitoring studies for water and air quality are conducted in many locations throughout California, the United States, and the world. The Department has strong affiliations with a number of research centers including the California Primate Research Center, the Institute for Toxicology and Environmental Health, Crocker Nuclear Laboratory, and the Bodega Bay Marine Laboratories. Students often receive financial support through research projects, fellowships, and Department funds.
