General Information Want to have an environmental influence on new developments or correct past mistakes? Becoming an environmental engineer offers all sorts of opportunities to do just that... In 1987, during the World Commission on Environment and Development , the world's leaders realized they needed to put in place policies to prevent environmental catastrophe. That's when the concept of "sustainable development" was born. It refers to strategies that address our needs while not compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. For environmental engineers , this has become a definition they work with almost every day. Environmental engineering is usually regarded as a branch of civil engineering-the discipline concerned with how to plan, design, develop and manage the building of roads, airports, railways, bridges, dams and other structures. Amid the resource extraction, building projects and urban spread that are so much a part of our civilization, environmental engineers work alongside teams of experts to minimize the environmental impacts of these activities. As you can imagine, the task is immense. On one hand, environmental engineers help corporations plan the environmental management of their operations. They will incorporate measures and systems that will help control and prevent pollution and ensure public health and safety. On the other hand, they'll find out if a site has been contaminated by industrial use. When they perform environmental site assessment, engineers will review historical records and implement water and soil sampling programs to identify the extent of the pollution.

    What is Civil Engineering?
Civil engineers plan, design, build, and maintain structures essential to American civilization. A typical engineering project is large, one of a kind, and important in the daily lives of many people. It is one of the few areas of engineering in which the engineer deals directly with the public in every phase of the job. Civil engineering at Ohio State offers the prospective student an exciting academic program enhanced by experiences in state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. Ohio State offers a challenging environment designed to provide the student with resources and background necessary to pursue activities in the many different areas of civil engineering. Civil Eng Program ... Student Services Research Centers Byrd Polar Research Center Center for Mapping Center for Materials ... Ohio State Engineer Graduate Studies. It is a big decision. It's not only a career decision, it's a life decision. Do you want to go to graduate school, and if so, where? Are you looking to improve your career mobility? The American Society of Civil Engineers is now in support of requiring a Master's degree or equivalent as a prerequisite for the Professional Engineer's license. Are you looking for more knowledge than you got in a simple bachelor's program? Many students attend graduate school because they want to learn more about the topics they studied as an undergraduate, but didn't study in degrees in the areas of construction, materials, soils and foundations, structures, transportation, water resources engineering, environmental engineering, and remote sensing. A dual M.S. degree is offered in Urban Transportation Planning in conjunction with the Department of City and Regional Planning. We also offer an Advanced Professional degree program administered through the College of Engineering leading to the degree of Civil Engineer.
