Available Data Invasive Plants Native Grass Restoration Newsletter ... The National Environmental Research Park , located on the DOE reservation at Oak Ridge, provides over 8,000 ha (20,000 acres) of protected land for research and education in the environmental sciences. Lying in the heart of an eastern deciduous forest area of streams and reservoirs, hardwood forests, and extensive upland mixed forests, the research park offers the unique advantages of a large information base, close proximity to educational institutions, and on-site resources, including the services of environmental scientists and the field and laboratory facilities at ORNL. The Oak Ridge park is one in a DOE network of seven National Environmental Research Parks . It was designated an international biosphere reserve in 1989. It is also a unit member of the Southern Appalachian Biosphere Reserve and part of the Southern Appalachian Man and the Biosphere (SAMAB) Cooperative
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The research park is an outdoor laboratory. It has field research sites that provide maintenance and support facilities sufficient to permit sophisticated and well-instrumented environmental experiments. Among these facilities are elaborate monitoring systems that enable users to precisely and accurately measure environmental factors for extended periods of time. Because the park is under the jurisdiction of the federal government and public access is restricted, experimental sites and associated equipment will not be disturbed. Various sites in the park offer opportunities for aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem analyses such as biogeochemical cycling of pollutants resulting from energy-producing facilities, landscape alterations, and forest and wildlife management. Much of the research is long term, and a comprehensive data base of information about it is available. The Research Park is an ORNL

81% of voters support stronger environmental regulations or stricter enforcement of existing laws; 75% of Americans would like stronger federal environmental protections; 84% believe that government should enact tougher pollution and emission standards on industry; 82% said that they worry personally about pollution of drinking water, rivers, lakes and reservoirs; 78% worry personally about air pollution. Leveraging Democracy
to Improve Environmental Policy
A majority of Americans favor strong measures to protect our air, land, and water. Yet many elected leaders continue to shirk their responsibility to enact sound environmental policy. Our future is riding on closing this gap. We need to make sure that all citizens who care about clean air, clean water, their health and the environment are active on key policy issues and voting in elections. To reach this goal, LCV Education Fund is engaged in a broad, coordinated and strategic plan to find and engage such citizens across the country. By finding new ways to identify these voters, engaging and educating them on environmental issues, and then mobilizing them to act, the

Welcome! Understanding how and why some forests are fragmented, degraded, and losing species, while other forests are in good condition and even regrowing and expanding, is a puzzle to any thoughtful observer of the environment. In a world which is experiencing unprecedented degrees of environmental change and degradation at a global scale, one sees evidence of restoration, suggesting that under certain conditions, people can self-organize and stem the steady loss of the ecological systems that sustain us. At the Center for the Study of Institutions, Population, and Environmental Change (CIPEC) we are dedicated to understanding these processes and sharing this knowledge with the scientific community and the public. Photo by Joel Sartore We are guided in our work by science, particularly conservation biology, but we strive to be sensitive to the traditional knowledge of native people. Our hope is that one day the diversity of wildlife which once roamed Great Plains can be restored to a portion of its former range.
