The explosion of information technology and communication worldwide presents opportunities to empower many new audiences by giving them access to knowledge and resources. Exploring sustainable communities combines a number of important ideas about cities and communities that have emerged over the past few years. It draws on documents and ideas from two major sources. One is the United Nations' Second Global Conference on Human Settlements, the Habitat II conference (held in Istanbul, Turkey, in June 1996), which generated studies and regional conferences worldwide. The second source is the U.S. President's Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD), a body of government, business, labor, and environment leaders appointed by President Clinton to determine how to pursue sustainability in the United States. Global trends in population and human development based on data from World Resources 1994-95 presents graphs and maps to illustrate some of the major conditions and trends in population that determine the state of the world's environment.
