Bungendore course teaching teachers to teach kids about natural environment
Media release - 26 September 2003 The NPWS is seeking teachers from across the region to attend a special course in Bungendore in two weeks that is designed to show them how to teach children from kindergarten to year six about their local environment. NPWS Threatened Species Education Officer Toni McLeish said today that the one-day course starts with the basics and aims to provide the fundamental background information for teachers who have to teach kids about the environment. "Under the NSW school curriculum teachers must meet environmental education outcomes," Ms McLeish said. "However, through our contact with teachers we've discovered that many don't possess the basic knowledge and skills to do this effectively. "So we've designed what at this stage is a pilot program that aims to increase their knowledge base and give them the skills to take on this task. "What's important is that we will be training teachers to teach kids about their local environment.

How to Teach Students With Learning Disabilities in a Mainstream Class
Teaching students with special needs in a general education classroom benefits all students involved. The students with special needs receive appropriate education in the least restrictive environment, and general education and special education students interact in a positive way while working toward common classroom goals. Steps: Choose a teaching model. Choices include collaboration; having a special education (SE) teacher tutor SE students - the team model; having a SE teacher guide a team of general education (GE) teachers, also know as co-teaching; or allowing SE and GE teachers to teach together. Choose an instructional style. You may wish to teach in a very structured way, using textbooks and prefabricated materials, or you may want a more student-centered classroom with hands-on activity. Create a positive learning environment. Address the needs of students who require help with attending to tasks or need to be seated away from high-traffic areas.

In December 2001 U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher released a report decrying the deplorable physical condition into which we Americans have slid. Today, more than ever, it's critical that we teach children to pursue and enjoy physical activity and good health. The good news is, healthy kids and a healthy environment are closely intertwined. Efforts to help children understand and appreciate the natural environment often involve physical activities. Environmental education in areas such as water and air quality form a natural bridge to discussions of personal and public health. At the same time, physical education and health classes can readily incorporate environmental education. In physical education, we can explore activities such as hiking, orienteering, bicycling, archery, and skiing that offer both opportunities to stay fit and incentives to be good stewards of the natural world. The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion recommends that school health programs include topics such as environmental health. Along with talks about tobacco and nutrition, our children need life lessons on keeping the world around them healthy for themselves and other living things. Here are some suggestions for blending environmental education and physical/health education:
  • Take a hike.

Teach physical science using the environment
When we think of sciences that relate to the environment, we often focus on life sciences. But that?s only part of the picture. The physical sciencesphysics, chemistry, geology, astronomy, meteorology, and so onare important, too. Consider, for example, that neither people nor protozoa nor anything else would exist without the sun, water, soil, rocks, nutrients, air, and other nonliving components of our environment. Our bodies follow the laws of physics and chemistry. Our habitats are shaped by gravity and weather. Even the moon and the stars figure in, turning the tide and guiding migrating animals. Many environmental issues, such as water pollution, energy conservation, and global climate change, are grounded in the physical sciences. Lessons on the environment provide a good opportunity to introduce physical science concepts. Similarly, many physical science lessons are an open door to environmental topics. Here are some ideas for blending the two:
  • Hold a nonliving scavenger hunt.

Using Ada-Based Robotics to Teach Computer Science
ABSTRACT We present an Ada-based interface to Lego Mindstorms ™, a programmable robotics kit that has attracted considerable attention in the computing community. We discuss our motivations for choosing Ada over other high-level languages, and our particular implementation over possible alternatives. Robotics and Ada combine very nicely for teaching basic computing concepts to both technical and non-technical majors, as shown with several examples.
1.0 Introduction
Computer science is an intellectually demanding discipline. Much must be taught in the classroom in a short amount of time, and much of the knowledge is foundational: newer concepts require mastery of those taught before. Accordingly, introductory computer science courses are often frustrating for both students and faculty. When asked to complete simple programming tasks that seem to accomplish little, students are frustrated at the amount of work they must put in for what seems to them little benefit. Faculty in turn are challenged by the different learning styles of their students, and by the breakneck pace of the material.

Philosophical Shift: Teach the Faculty to Teach Information Literacy
Karl E. Mundt Library, Dakota State University
ABSTRACT
Integrating information literacy throughout the undergraduate curriculum is limited as long as librarians insist on doing the instruction themselves, because staffing is inadequate to support full-fledged, integrated instruction programs. Instead, librarians should train and assist the faculty to teach information literacy in their courses. Essential elements which will enable faculty to embrace and teach information literacy include: faculty recognition of information literacy as a core component of undergraduate instruction; adequate training for faculty in the use of information systems and services; adequate education of faculty in techniques and activities that can be used to develop student information literacy; librarian committment to a focus on faculty development and collaboration; and development of the library as a physical and virtual learning environment. A "teach the teacher" approach provides a realistic way of reaching more students in more courses.
Introduction
Integrating information literacy throughout the undergraduate curriculum is limited as long as librarians insist on doing the instruction themselves. Despite idealistic instructional goals, most libraries simply do not have enough staff to offer instruction extensively throughout a curriculum. Therefore, limitations on successful integration are built into the system. By default, librarians have found a number of ways to deal with staff limitations. For example, at Dakota State University, we have focused on certain core courses such as composition classes and have focused on courses whose faculty have been "library friendly." However, the information literacy movement was intended to help us avoid exactly this course-by-course trap in which "individual librarians working with individual classroom faculty or with a particular program may successfully integrate the library into particular courses only to have a change in personnel undo years of effort."(1)

Modernizing Meditation: Researchers Create Virtual Environment to Teach and Enhance Meditation
With colleague Chris Shaw, Larry Hodges and Diane Gromala have created a virtual reality program to help make meditation more appealing and easier to learn. Georgia Tech Photo: Gary Meek 300 dpi JPG version (769Kb) A virtual reality-based program aimed at making meditation more appealing and easier to learn is under development at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Researchers have created a "meditation chamber," which they have field-tested and are now refining for potential commercialization by a faculty start-up company.
In its current form, the program is a 15-minute virtual experience in relaxation techniques and meditation. Users wear a head-mounted display with audio and video that guides them through a series of sunset and moonrise scenes and muscle relaxation exercises. The system also monitors the users' respiration, pulse rate and sweat gland activity (a measure of calmness) to provide real-time biofeedback regarding the effectiveness of the virtual experience.

How and When Parents Teach The role of the parent in education is critical because the home environment is vital to children's educational achievement. Not even the best school can do the job alone. Parents can, and should, take advantage of opportunities at home to teach their children in an informal way, teaching academics and developing strong, one-on-one relationships. As children continue in school, all of us parents, grandparents, and all adults in children's lives, need to remember that we are vital partners with teachers in the education of our children. The Learning Environment at Home All children need to be able to explore their environment without a constant no, no, no. They need a house that is as safe as it can be, containing things that they can experiment with. For young children, these can be pots and pans. Older children are 'toying' with ideas. All children need a home environment that shows a love of learning and respect for achievement. They need lots of language experience. They need answers to their questions. They need serious and intelligent talk. They need explorations into the world, time with friends, and toys and materials to use freely and imaginatively. Children need adults who respond to them with hugs, words, and emotions. These signs need to be as consistent and clear as possible. Children need to receive clues on how they behave and how they affect others. When they behave well, they need adults to reinforce their behavior and praise them for it.

We must be aware of how we treat our students, of how our students treat us, and of how our students treat each other. These kinds of issues span disciplines and professions. They are important in all classes, whether the format is lecture, discussion or team projects. Each class, regardless of format or discipline, offers the opportunity to increase awareness of diversity and multi-cultural issues. Based on that principle, I collected some different teaching tips. These tips address all types of classes in every discipline. You may find that some are more appropriate to your situation than others, and you may be more confortable using some than others. If you have a tip about teaching that address diversity or multi-cultural issues that you use and would like to share, please forward it to me and I will include it here.
