Growing Bigger Brains: Research Affects How Teachers Teach
"To enhance public awareness of the benefits to be derived from brain research," Congress designated the 1990s as the Decade of the Brain . Now, as that decade draws to a close, Education World takes a look at the results of some of the most recent brain research and explores the implications for you and your students. According to Ronald Kotulak, the author of Learning How to Use the Brain , scientists learned more about the brain during the last decade than they learned during the entire century preceding it. So if you've been out of school for even five or ten years, chances are that much of what you learned about how the brain develops and functions is obsolete. Does it matter? Take a look at some of the latest research and find out.

    Chapter Objectives
After you complete this chapter, you should be able to answer the following questions:
    • What is an R/3 system?
    • What is an R/3 instance?
    • What is Basis?
    • What platforms does R/3 support?
    • What are the possible R/3 system configurations?
    • What is the R/3 server architecture?
    • What is a logon client?
    What is R/3?
R/3 is an integrated suite of applications designed to handle the data processing for large corporations. It was developed in Germany by the company named SAP (an acronym for Systems Applications and Products for data processing). TIP When you see the word SAP by itself, it is pronounced " ess-ay-pea ." When it is combined with another word, it is pronounced sap, as in "tree sap." You should never say "sap" when referring to the company SAP. Always pronounce it as " ess-ay-pea ." Saying "sap" is the surest way to say, "I don't know anything about SAP."

AARE Conference, 2001 ATP01017 Creating a constructivist-learning environment using ICT to teach concepts and skills in classroom management: An exploration at NIE, Singapore. National Institute of Education, Singapore Paper to be presented at the International Educational Research Conference, University of Notre Dame, Fremantle, Western Australia, 2-6 December 2001. Creating a constructivist-learning environment using ICT to teach concepts and skills in classroom management: An exploration at NIE, Singapore. National Institute of Education, Singapore Abstract Development of ICT has provided new opportunities for delivering instruction in institutes of Higher Education. At NIE we have made an attempt to develop a learning environment that delivers course materials to students in a variety of formats. An indigenous CD-ROM was developed as a comprehensive resource to facilitate learning the concepts and skills associated with classroom management. The CD-ROM was set up in a web-based format so that it could interface with video-clips and websites that are relevant to classroom management issues. Communication with the students was maintained through Blackboard communication tools. The students also had opportunities to interaction on a face-to-face basis with their peers and the tutors during tutorials. This paper reports on this endeavor in using the new technologies in delivering a teacher education module on classroom management and the perception of students who participated in the experiment.

LEARNING AND TEACHING IN AN ONLINE ENVIRONMENT There is an old saying that the course of civilization is a race between catastrophe and education. In a democracy such as ours, we must make sure that education wins the race. -John F. Kennedy, 1958 Principles of Learning Embracing the belief that all students can learn requires a shift in our thinking. The belief that aptitude is critical to learning needs to change to the notion that effort can create learning, that people can become smart by engaging in complex learning tasks. Effort-based education demands:
  • Clear Expectations. Standards for student performance are clear and communicated to all.
  • Students Active in Creating Their Own Knowledge. Knowledge is built by using prior knowledge to interpret and organize new information, to think and rethink, to demonstrate and exhibit.
  • Academic Rigor in The Curriculum. A rigorous curriculum is solidly based in the disciplines and organized so that student knowledge and understanding deepens progressively without needless repetition. Students are accountable to the standards of appropriate content areas. Students are also accountable for the quality of their reasoning.
Challenges to Learning
  • Isolation and Motivation in Online and Distance Learning Courses
  • Another professional challenge facing teachers is the wide range of ability levels among their students. Many schools confront this challenge by placing students in academic tracks which tends to further separate students by race, social class and language, and contradicts the principle of equal opportunity vital to a vibrant democracy.

Wind turbines teach schools lessons in economics, environment by Kevon Storie
Construction phase of Forest City High Schools' wind project shows hub of turbine stands about 9 feet high.
School children used to think about flying kites when the wind kicked up, but with wind turbines becoming a familiar site in more and more school yards, blustery days may now remind kids that their classrooms are running on clean, renewable energy.
Three schools in Western's service area have discovered that generating their own power can be good for the budget, the environment and the curriculum.
The interior of the generator housing with the generator, gear box and disk brake gives size perspective of Forest City Community Schools' wind turbine. In 1997

We see increasing organizational demand to effectively structure and manage that content Benefits Thom Haller has been called an "information architecture evangelist." He teaches information structure to clients and to DC area residents via a 10-week course at USDA Graduate School. "Thom kept me engaged, used my input, presented concepts in a manner that was easy to follow, and enabled me to apply the lessons to my work." In our courses, we present students with a framework for understanding how people use nformation, we introduce a vocabulary for exchanging ideas in a web-development environment, and we provide specific tools our students can take back to their jobs. Because we provide specific skills that can be tracked through their specific applications, we can show clients a return on investment Learn about our classes at Info.Design's studio and classes you can bring "in-house" and our "off-site" courses. Chile: UC students in Chile teach, study the environment, and work with NGOs
“The internship experience is perhaps the most positive element of the academic program,” according to Gwen Kirkpatrick, UCB Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and currently Director of the EAP Study Center in Santiago, Chile. Kirkpatrick has been instrumental in helping to increase internship possibilities. “In general, students who undertook internships felt much more united to Chilean society and had a real sense of achievement in completing their projects. I was impressed with their enterprise and their commitment,” Kirkpatrick said. “I have gotten to interview people from the Minister of Education and the National Service for Women. I have learned so much... about the feminist movement in Chile, and also about how a woman’s-rights NGO functions,” Frantz said. In future years EAP will focus on developing internship opportunities with business, in spite of high unemployment and recession conditions in Chile.

between business, artists, school district parent groups, and the Mississippi Arts Commission has created the Walls That teach learning environment .
http://www.gsd.k12.ms.us/wallslyt.html
The Grenada Middle School has deveoped an innovative new teaching strategy using the arts-an idea to use the walls of a building facility to teach the student. As a result of this concept, a partnership between business, artists, school district parent groups, and the Mississippi Arts Commission has created the "Walls That Teach" learning environment . "Walls that Teach" has produced a teaching work of art that describes world events and takes the students on a journey combining art, technology, and history.
The project communicates the idea that the school is a "time machine" equipped with a graphic time line, swirling graphics, and a number countdown inlaid in the floor tiles. This project serves as an interactive teaching tool that has been the basis of county-wide teacher inservice and a motivation technique for student creative writing activities, historical studies, and research.
After traveling past the timeline that extends form 6,000 B.C. to the present, the "time machine" takes the students to the first stop-the fifties! Students are surrounded with a mural, painted by artist Ginger Wolfe, depicting a myriad of famous personalities from this era, all of them portrayed in the environment of the local Grenada Lake.
The next hallway, Egypt, features a nine-foot sculptural sarcophagus, map, and murals depicting life in Egypt. The artist, Robin Whitfield, stated, "The Egyptian section contains design elements, hieroglyphics, and murals depicting the major styles of Egyptian art. The walls of the halls will be used, as well as the floor tiles, to provide a total learning environment for the middle school students."

Henry Adams once said, "A teacher affects eternity." Teachers in private schools profoundly appreciate the eternal dimensions of their work, for they nourish not only the minds but also the hearts and souls of their students. Serving in schools that emphasize a child's complete development, private school teachers have the privileged opportunity to transmit the core academic skills as well as the lessons that count most in life: lessons about spirituality, love, values, the wonder of creation, the purpose of existence. Can any work be more important? Indeed, the work of the private school teacher is of such significance, it is often regarded as a ministry and a calling, rather than just a job. Patty Quinn, a teacher at a private school in Maryland, described it this way: "I look at this job as a vocation, not as a career. I really think that the work that I'm doing has eternal consequences." ( Education Week , March 29, 2000) Private schools are wonderful places in which to teach. They offer caring, orderly, safe, and nurturing environments; they emphasize the education of the whole child; they insist on academic excellence; and they treat teachers as professionals, giving them considerable autonomy and independence in matters of instruction. The disciplined environment, rigorous curriculum, caring communities, and high expectations private schools provide make them some of the most effective schools in the country. Teachers in private schools can spend their time doing what they are supposed to be doing: teaching.
