Using African Film and Video to Teach about the Environment Workshop Michigan State University, February 4 to 6, 1999 Many undergraduate courses use films and videos to teach about the African environment. However, often they are outdated and promote stereotypic images of Africa. Furthermore, the concept of the African environment for many American students is limited to African wildlife devoid of humans. This workshop aims to enhance social science, natural science, and humanities undergraduate courses that teach about the African environment, by encouraging the use of film and video images that are accurate representations of Africans and Africa and that challenge the conventional concept of the African environment. Hence, this workshop will provide college faculty with methods and strategies for incorporating high quality film and video on Africa into undergraduate general education courses and introductory-level courses that concern the African environment in the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. This method, called the Child-to-Child approach, is an effective way to foster the development of young leaders who are able to make a positive impact on their peers. For these new young leaders enhancing their self-esteem, public speaking abilities, and leadership skills are just a few of the benefits of this program. CHF worked in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Health and the Municipality of Gaza to select a group of children from the Al Zarqa area to receive training on environmental and personal hygiene issues. The project decided to target boys and girls from ages 9-12. Both boys and girls of this age were eager and available to attend the sessions, and it was thought that empowering pre-adolescents with such public awareness messages would have a greater impact on behavior change during the crucial adolescent and teenage years.

Monitoring Programs Teach Citizens to Safeguard Health of River Ecosystems
Students, members of environmental organizations and other community volunteers in central British Columbia are helping scientists monitor the water quality of the Salmon River by collecting, identifying and counting insects, clams, crayfish, snails, leeches, worms and other tiny aquatic invertebrates that make the tributary their home. This volunteer-based monitoring program-developed by scientists at Environment Canada's National Water Research Institute in Saskatoon in consultation with local groups and government agencies-enables people with little or no science background to take an active role in safeguarding their local environment by teaching them basic scientific sampling techniques. And it provides the scientific community with valuable information on how the river's ecosystem is changing over time. Aquatic macroinvertebrates are prime subjects for such studies for several reasons. First, they are relatively easy to sample-not only because they are large enough to be seen without a microscope, but also because they are a primary food source for many important species of fish, and therefore abundant in most streams. Second, because they do not stray far during their lives, they indicate a river ecosystem's state of health by revealing the effects of short- and long-term environmental variations on local conditions. Once the composition of the invertebrate community has been determined, inferences can be drawn about the health of the stream at the sites sampled and, ultimately, about the extent of habitat degradation caused by impacts such as organic enrichment or sedimentation. Some macroinvertebrates are more sensitive to water pollution or other habitat disturbances than others. However, understanding which types of pollutants are involved or why certain types of animals are present or absent requires more information than a simple count can provide.

Raven: Teach about the environment in all majors
Peter H. Raven delivers the Jill and Ken Iscol Distinguished Environmental Lecture in Call Alumni Auditorium, April 29. Frank DiMeo/University Photography By Roger Segelken The topic for Missouri Botanical Garden Director Peter H. Raven's 2004 Iscol Distinguished Environmental Lecture on April 29 was "Biodiversity, Sustainability and Cornell." His Call Alumni Auditorium audience listened through an hour of gloomy statistics and dire predictions to hear what Cornell can do to help an imperiled planet. The answer from the renown conservationist was, in a word: education. Regarding biodiversity, Raven said, "the situation today is so awful, so threatening to human future civilization," and it probably will get worse. He cited numbers for species extinctions, starting with the fossil record, which shows that "hard" organisms leaving fossil evidence apparently went extinct at a worldwide rate of about 10 species per year throughout prehistory. As humans achieved ascendancy on the planet, the species extinction rate rose to around 100 per year, Raven said, and currently several thousand species disappear every year. That annual rate soon will rise to tens of thousands, he predicted, noting that millions of species have yet to be identified and cataloged. A leading cause of biodiversity loss second only to habitat destruction from land development, Raven said is the arrival of alien, invasive species things like the zebra mussel, an aquatic nuisance, and purple loosestrife, which out-competes native plants in North American wetlands. Coping with invasive species costs an estimated $140 billion a year in costs to the American economy, nearly as much, Raven noted, as U.S. expenditures on law enforcement. "Biodiversity will only survive in a world that has reached a state of sustainability," Raven said. "If we're going to base sustainability on biodiversity, it's pretty dumb of us to be killing [biodiversity] off at such a fast rate."

Now We Teach! We chose the topics that we wanted to teach, worked on our lesson plans, and gathered our materials. We took everything out to the outdoor classroom ... ... and practiced our lessons on each other. This turned out to be harder than teaching the children! Here comes our first class of elementary school children: second graders from North Elementary. "Good morning, Mr. Tree!!" The weather didn't cooperate, and the outdoor classroom was too muddy to visit. Instead, we set up learning stations in and around our classroom. An ecosystem (big word!) has living and once-living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) things in it. Is a person biotic? A plant? What about air and water? And what about a wooden birdhouse? (Hint: it was once part of a tree.) The living members of the ecosystem have to have food - they either make their own food or eat each other. You can show this by making a food chain. One of the main abiotic factors in an ecosystem is the water. For fish to live in a pond, the water can't be too acidic or basic. It's important to test the pH. For a pH test, look closely and compare the colors to see which one your sample is most like.

What Can I Teach My Young Child About the Environment? Reprinted Article, December 1999
This brochure is based on the 1996 ERIC Digest, Starting Early: Environmental Education During the Early Childhood Years, written by Ruth A. Wilson for the ERIC Clearinghouse for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education.
When should environmental education begin - in the third grade? first grade? kindergarten? The answer is even earlier. Environmental education based on life experiences should begin during the very earliest years of life. Such experiences play a critical role in shaping lifelong attitudes, values, and patterns of behavior toward natural environments.

Controlling the CorelDRAW 8 Environment
In Hour 1 of this book, you jumped right into CorelDRAW 8. You didn't need a detailed investigation into the program environment to create a wide array of text and shapes and combine them to make a fairly complex illustration. As you continue to work with CorelDRAW, you'll find that the features that make CorelDRAW so powerful require you to customize and define the working environment. For example, if you create designs with dozens of objects, you might find working in Wireframe view faster and easier. If you create technical drawings, you'll want to use CorelDRAW's capability to attach dimensions to objects. If you design graphics for a web site, you might want to create a custom Drawing page the size of a typical monitor, defined in pixels, not inches. These are just a few examples of the wide-ranging changes you can make to CorelDRAW. You can customize the basic look and feel of CorelDRAW 8 to serve your own specific design tasks. In this hour, you learn how to work with the Standard toolbar, place Docker windows, and work with the status bar and rollups.
Viewing and Moving Toolbars
CorelDRAW 8 comes with ten premade toolbars, but 99% of the time you will want to use the Standard toolbar. It has all the tools you need to cut, copy, and paste objects, and to control the basics of your environment, such as zoom level.

The process evaluation component examines the extent to which the Pennsylvania licensee for T.E.A.C.H. has implemented the program as planned. The outcome evaluation assesses the extent to which the goals of the program have been achieved. The study began in July 1998 when T.E.A.C.H. Pennsylvania was initiated. Cohorts from the first three state fiscal years (98/99, 99/00, and 00/01) are being tracked as they complete each of their T.E.A.C.H. contracts and progress toward completion of credentials/degrees. Therefore, this study will continue until such time that the last set of scholars either complete their degrees or choose not to continue with the T.E.A.C.H. scholarship program. In addition to the administrative data on applications and a number of outcome measures for the scholars who initiate contracts (e.g., credits taken, grade point averages, compensation levels, turnover, and advancement in position), this study gathers more detailed data from a sample of scholars (the research subjects) that are observed in their classroom (utilizing the ECERS or ITERS and Arnett Caregiver Interaction Scale). Further, these subjects complete a questionnaire, which includes the following measures:

After nearly two years of reading, browsing through catalogs, cruising the web, and talking to many homeschoolers in search of the "right" curriculum, I have come to the conclusion that educating myself about teaching, the learning process, etc. is a higher priority than purchasing a curriculum package.
Why? Because only when you know how and what to teach and get a wide variety of input about what has worked best for others can you know which curriculum package, if any, you should decide upon. My degree in education has only given me a good foundation in this process. It has not eliminated the need for the process.
