Overview
Educators know that students learn by listening. They learn better by reading. They learn best by taking what they have been told or what they have read and weaving it into a written composition of their own creation.
  • Have you ever assigned a paper to be turned in at the end of the grading period? Did some students write their paper the night before? Were many of the compositions very badly written? Was it one big evaluation headache for you?
Many educators feel they lack the expertise to help their students become better writers. Time is also a factor. Simply changing your writing assignment to a Process Approach rather than a Product Approach will encourage your students to produce better papers. It is not the purpose of this Teaching Referenece to layout this Process Approach; however, may I suggest you explore the 6-Trait Writing Process at some of these excellent sites:

Using the Child's Environment To Teach at Home and School. ERIC/CSMEE Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC The world of a child is the tangible, real world of the here and now. It is difficult for children to extend ideas from the small, familiar world in which they operate to the larger, abstract world beyond. Even adults envision distant parts of the world based on their own experiences and prior learning. Nevertheless, the global concepts of environmental education, the basic principles of ecology, and the importance of environmental responsibility can be instilled in a child without reference to faraway places. These ideas can all be made concrete right where the child lives and goes to school.
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ECOLOGY
One of the fundamental tenets of ecology is that all activities have by-products. In environmental education, it is understood that this tenet applies to all activities of nature, both natural and human-induced. Some of these by-products are called "pollution." Though pollution tends to have a negative connotation, not all pollution necessarily affects the environment adversely (Botkin and Keller, 1982).

Teach Better! 2. THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT The traditional classroom, with the chairs in rows facing the teacher's desk/whiteboard/OHP, happens to be the 'default setting' for most of the non-laboratory rooms we hold our educational sessions in. There's no good reason why the seating arrangement cannot be changed. Re-arranging the furniture and student placement within the four walls of a standard learning environment is one of the best ways to promote student-centred learning. Reasons:
Tip: Students may need to be trained that it's OK to make noise and move the furniture around. My students have come to look for a simple "Block-Seating Diagram' on the white board when they enter the room, which tells them the preferred arrangement for this lesson. continue to: 3.0 Experiential Learning Activities (hands-on stuff or "what, no paper?) mrtedglobal@hotmail.com

Though pollution tends to have a negative connotation, not all pollution necessarily affects the environment adversely (Botkin and Keller, 1982). Ivan Illich, an environmental philosopher, suggests that most of the problems of humans and the environment are a consequence of a society originally designed to protect people from the environment, improve their material circumstances, and enhance their freedom (Gardels and Snell, 1990). Yet, to be good for humans, the environment must be compatible with the unchangeable needs of human nature. Because people are relatively unable to adjust biologically to nature, we must change our immediate environment instead (Dubos, 1971).

Anne Taylor teaches at the University of New Mexico, George Vlastos is an architect, and Robert Aldrich, who teaches at the University of Washington School of Medicine, was the first director of the National Institute of Mental Health's National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. - Robert Gilman
There are a number of environments in which children must spend a large share of their time. Some of these are antagonistic, hostile or incompatible to self-expression. In this regard, the American school leaves little room for a sense of ownership or involvement. Students have very little to say, and are rarely asked for their opinions, about their school's physical characteristics . In its present state, the architecture and physical setting of most American schools is deplorable. It almost always follows the passive "egg crate" closed classroom format of 200 years ago, and all too often it is more like a prison than a place of discovery, wonder and creativity. It doesn't have to be this way. Since 1972 two of us (Taylor and Vlastos) have been studying the effects of learning environments on the behavior and learning of children. We are convinced that school environments have a largely untapped potential as active contributors to the learning process. It is also our contention that every teacher, administrator and child is a potential designer. Great amounts of money are not needed. Careful thought, time, enthusiasm and efficiency of planning can make a school ready to create the kind of learning environment so crucial to student growth.

    Teaching Environment
Your first sighting of your school will most likely confuse, and alarm you because it will be nothing like you will be expecting. Korea is heavily urbanised and 90% of schools will be housed inside office buildings often on the 2-7th floors. Often schools will be unnoticeable to anyone in the street unless they think to look up for signs and advertising. Many times this advertising is not in English, as you would expect.
My personal recollection of arriving to work at my school was somewhat frightening and my first reaction was ?Is a school actually located where I am being taken or am I working at a bar or parlour
I had arrived from a long haul flight at 8pm the night before, was collected at he airport by a man who spoke NO English (2 hours late) driven for one hour in the dark to goodness knows where, and deposited into a massive apartment complex on the 8th floor.
    Top of Page
I found out he next morning there were 100 towers in this new complex, all-identical except for the number on the side of the building I was told to wait in the foyer at 9am the next morning. Actually seeing where I was for the first time in daylight hours was a shock! At the organized time a van approached and the Korean driver (in minimum English) asked me to get in. We went around a few blocks and 10 lane roads to arrive at this little block of office buildings. Upon embarking all I could see were drinking bars and nightclubs, certainly nothing looking remotely likes a school. I was ushered into the lift and suddenly the lift opened on the 4th floor to this amazing school environment. The school occupied the 4th and the 5th floor and all children accessed the school by the lift.
