Home News Events City Departments ... Contact Us Search for: Improving air quality is a main focus for the Department of Environment (DOE). First, the Department ensures compliance with and enforces air quality laws in the city. On a daily basis DOE enforces the City's air pollution control laws and many federal and state laws. The Department issues permits and conducts inspections at more than 2,100 industrial facilities to ensure they are in compliance with laws and regulations. Appropriate legal action is taken against facilities that are in violation. The Department is also responsible for administering certain programs required by the federal Clean Air Act. For instance, we test gasoline at City gas stations to ensure that it complies with federal air quality requirements for gasoline formulation. Second, the Department implements many voluntary initiatives to encourage better air quality. More information about these programs can be found below. New information on air quality is now available year-round in more than 100 U.S. cities. As part of an ongoing effort to protect the American public from air pollution, the Environmental Protection Agency, together with state and local governments, is expanding current air quality forecasts to include daily information on particle pollution You can find this new air quality index at http://www.epa.gov/airnow/

Climate change Over the past 100 years global mean temperature has increased by 0.6 °C and in Europe by about 1.2 °C and the 1990s was the warmest decade over the past 150 years. Temperatures are projected to increase further by 1.4 to 5.8°C by 2100, with larger increases in Eastern and Southern Europe. There is increased evidence that most of this warming can be attributed to the emission of greenhouse gases and aerosols by human activities. Warming-up of the atmosphere is part of changes in climate and (extreme) weather conditions. If these changes persist, they will influence water availability, flood hazards, agricultural productivity, and natural areas. This section contains information on the causes of the problem, the possible consequences, and the national and international activities under the Kyoto protocol to limit climate change. webmaster@eea.eu.int

Cypress Upland
With eleven different ecoregions, Saskatchewan is a land of natural beauty and diversity. Explore spectacular settings, like Clearwater Provincial Park , located in the Churchill River Upland Ecoregion. The shape of the Saskatchewan landscape is a result of the geology of the province, and, in particular, with the effects of glaciation from over 10,000 years ago. The flat plains to the south of the province are formed the sediment deposited from glacial lakes and the rolling lanscapes in the northern agricultural areas typify glacial till parent material.
Ecozones are areas of the earth's surface representative of very generalized ecological units characterized by interactive and adjusting abiotic and biotic factors. Canada is separated into 15 Terrestial and 5 Marine Ecozones. Examples of ecoregions are Prairies, Boreal Shield, Taiga Cordelera and Pacific Maritime. Reference: Ecological Management and Assessment Network. Ecoregions
Ecoregions are subdivisions of an ecozone characterized by distinctive large order landforms or assemblages of regional landforms, small order macro- or mesoclimates, vegetation, soils, water, and regional human activity patterns/uses. There are 217 terrestrial and 18 marine ecoregions in Canada. Saskatchewan has 11 distinct Ecoregions.
The Saskatchewan landscape reflects the long-term interaction of its geology, climate, and recently, of its people.

112. PAI: Population Issues: Environment
environment. symbolizes the conviction that greater access to voluntary family planningbenefits the health of women, children and the environment worldwide.
http://www.populationaction.org/issues/environment/
Overview Population Reproductive Health Policy ... Intl. Advocacy Environment More people and higher incomes worldwide are multiplying humanity's impacts on the environment and on the natural resources that are essential to life. Today more than 1.1 billion people live in the areas richest in species diversity and the most threatened by human activities. While these areas comprise about 12 percent of the planet's land surface, they hold nearly 20 percent of its human population. The population in these biodiversity hotspots is growing at a collective rate of 1.8 percent annually, compared to the world's population's annual growth rate of 1.3 percent. Current demographic trends offer hope, however. Over the past 40 years the average number of children born to each woman has fallen from five to less than three. Young people increasingly want to wait to have children and to have smaller families. Policymakers have a choice. They can do nothing, or they can help ensure that in the 21st century the world's population peaks with fewer than 8 billion people, simply by committing the financial resources to meet the needs of couples who want to have smaller families and delay childbearing.
Community-Based Population and Environment (CBPE) programs can improve local environmental, health and economic conditions, and ease the pressures that human population exerts on local natural resources. In recent years, dozens of environmental and development projects in developing countries have formed partnerships to integrate or otherwise link community-based activities related both to natural resource conservation and reproductive health.

An exploration of the viability of underground buildings in contemporary America, with some discussion of international examples.
http://www.subsurfacebuildings.com
Skyscrapers are the headliners, and underground buildings are the virtually unnoticed understudies of architecture. Every day, tens of thousands of Americans use more than 450 public and commercial structures and 5,000 private homes that nestle within the earth. Major new subterranean structures are under construction or are on the drawing boards. SubsurfaceBuildings.com explores underground buildings, examines their impact on architecture and the environment, and addresses such questions as: Why would anyone want to bury a building? Are underground buildings safe How do architects feel about designing buildings that are hidden within the earth? What is the environmental impact of subterranean architecture? Dozens of SubsurfaceBuildings.com articles use photos, drawings, and descriptions to answer questions like these while showing that underground buildings are surprisingly common and appealing.
