To enjoy and prosper in our communities we need to nurture and protect the natural environment. Compact urban centers protect the natural environment by reducing the amount of land taken up by low-density sprawl development. We can also make our communities more livable and environmentally-sensitive by reducing our dependence on motor vehicles, minimizing waste and making efficient use of our water resources. The Ahwahnee Principles - which form the basis for the Local Government Commission's work on livable, sustainable communities - address the issue of environmental enhancement in several ways:
  • Community size should be designed so that housing, jobs, daily needs and other activities are within easy walking distance of each other. As many activities as possible should be located within easy walking distance of transit stops. The location and character of the community should be consistent with a larger transit network.

An Initiative of the Global Leaders for Tomorrow Environment Task Force, World Economic Forum The Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) The Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) is a measure of overall progress towards environmental sustainability, developed for 142 countries. The ESI scores are based upon a set of 20 core "indicators," each of which combines two to eight variables for a total of 68 underlying variables. The ESI permits cross-national comparisons of environmental progress in a systematic and quantitative fashion. It represents a first step towards a more analytically driven approach to environmental decisionmaking.
The documents made available here provide in-depth details on the analytical framework, quantitative methodology, and data sources that underlie the ESI . We welcome criticisms, suggestions, and comments.
The ESI is the result of collaboration among the World Economic Forum's Global Leaders for Tomorrow Environment Task Force, The Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy, and the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).

MacOSX software for simulation of artificial life and decentralized systems.
http://www.spiderland.org/breve
: version 1.9.1 now available for Mac OS X, Linux and Windows
A list of changes in the new version is available here
breve is a free software package which makes it easy to build 3D simulations of decentralized systems and artificial life. Users define the behaviors of agents in a 3D world and observe how they interact. breve includes physical simulation and collision detection so you can simulate realistic creatures, and an OpenGL display engine so you can visualize your simulated worlds. Write Your Own Simulations
breve simulations are written in an easy to use language called steve . The language is object-oriented and borrows many features from languages such as C, Perl and Objective C, but even users without previous programming experience will find it easy to jump in. More information on the steve language can be found in the documentation section Interface With Your Own Code
breve features an extensible plugin architecture which allows you to write your own plugins and interact with your own code. Writing plugins is simple and allows you to expand breve to work with existing projects. Plugins have been written in breve to generate MIDI music, download web pages, interact with a Lisp environment and interact with the "push" language. To develop your own plugins, you'll need to download the plugin SDK from the download section Technical Overview Learn more about breve.

Creating virtual heritage environments that intend to be both engaging and educational is a challenging process. Digital archaeological reconstruction has been concerned with exact replication of facts rather than with understanding, for the latter raises the annoying dilemma of how to present scientific uncertainty. And while the bulk of computer game design may be justly considered a-cultural or even anti-cultural, the underlying techniques of engaging interactively with the audience offer new ways of increasing the popularity and immersive learning of virtual environments. However there are some serious issues in heritage projects adopting a game-style approach. Would using interactive game techniques and technologies create a more engaging user experience?
