Economics inspired by Dhamma would be concerned with how economic activities influence the entire process of cause and condition, which will essentially affect the three interconnected spheres of human existence individual, society and nature or the environment.

Buddhist Economics (Payutto) Source: THE NATION (Thailand newspaper), September 17, l998 http://www.nationmultimedia.com/
Bhuddist economics: Adhering to ethical standards
With the current economic order in turmoil, ideological
forces have renewed their battle. And a Thai thinker of
Buddhist economics has surged into the international
spotlight. Thanong Khanthong
(thanong@nation.nationgroup.com) reports.
THE impending collapse of the global capital system
could heighten the interest of economists and thinkers on
buddhist economics, expounded by Thailand's candidate
for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, the Venerable Prayudh Payutto. A distinguished monk and a foremost buddhist scholar, Payutto has devoted his service to the layman's understanding of the buddhist doctrine, the foundation of which he rigorously combines with other disciplines, including economics. In his remarkable, and very readable, work, ''Buddhist Economics: The Middle Way for The Marketplace'', Payutto combines his interpretation of Dhamma with the force of economics at work to illustrate a profound way in which economics should be treated, understood and

Gasoline
Over the past decade there has been considerable effort by government and industry directed towards providing cleaner gasoline for Canadians. Initiatives include the removal of lead and reductions of summer vapour pressure, benzene and sulphur levels. Many of the recent federal initiatives on gasoline were developed further to the recommendations of the CCME Task Force on Cleaner Vehicles and Fuels (October 1995) and as part of the process to determine an appropriate level of sulphur in gasoline and diesel The Benzene in Gasoline Regulations took effect in July 1999 and prohibit the supply of gasoline containing more than 1% benzene by volume. The regulations also prohibit the sale of gasoline that contains benzene at a concentration that exceeds 1.5% by volume. Suppliers of gasoline may elect to meet the requirements for benzene or the benzene emissions number on the basis of annual average limits. More on the Benzene in Gasoline Regulations The federal Sulphur in Gasoline Regulations take effect July 2002 and require an average gasoline sulphur concentration of 150 mg/kg as of July 2002 and 30 mg/kg as of January 2005. One of HIYE's key roles is to raise awareness and stimulate discussion of health and environment issues. We do this in a number of ways. (Check the publications page for downloadable conference reports etc.)
  • Workshops - these quarterly events cover issues that are topical at the time and have an impact on health and environment. They are open to all. Following each workshop a report is produced to summarise the workshop and highlight the views of the participants. Topics have included:
    • The use of chemicals in everyday life and the wider health implications of using such chemicals. The workshop looked at the immediate and long-term effects on humans, other animals and our surrounding environment, as well as action currently being taken by organisations like Friends of the Earth to campaign against it. Following two presentations on this subject by key experts, the participants formed discussion groups to explore what we can do to change the use of these materials as individuals and as HIYE.
    • The disposal methods of waste and their effects on health . Looking at the implications of different waste disposal methods including incineration and landfill and then looking at a range of community/business activities that recycle goods for new products. Again, following these presentations discussions will be held on what can be done individually and as HIYE.

Development of Energy Management System (BEMS)
Goal of Development
In order to push ahead with energy savings in buildings, we need to perform the energy management by positively keeping track of status of energy consumption in buildings, thus leading to the verification and rightsizing of the energy management system, based on improvement planning in terms of the operation and actual operating conditions. The goal of development of the Energy Management System (BEMS) is to support the energy management and optimize the energy consumption in buildings.
Development versus Actual Performance
This BEMS stores the energy consumption, operation data, and indoor environmental data to output them in a variety of graphic presentations, thus making use of the system to check various items such as "energy saving effect", "operating conditions", "whether or not the indoor environments are kept within the setting range", "whether or not the indoor environments are kept at a value in excess of the setting range". By making effective use of these output results, the energy/indoor environmental management cycling is achieved, thus leading to compatibility between the "reduction in energy consumption" and the "conservation of indoor environment".

Funding Opportunities Biocomplexity in the Environment
Included in the ERE portfolio is Biocomplexity in the Environment (BE), one of NSF's Priority Areas. The BE program is a multi-year investment designed to promote new approaches to investigating the interactivity of biota and the environment.
BE includes activities designed to foster research and education on the complex inter-dependencies among the elements of specific environmental systems and interactions of different types of systems. All kinds of organisms-from microbes to humans-fall within the BE framework, as do environments that range from frozen polar regions and volcanic vents to temperate forests and agricultural lands as well as the neighborhoods and industries of urban centers. The key connector of BE activities is complexity-the idea that research on the individual components of environmental systems provides only limited information about the behavior of the systems themselves.
Current Competition
FY 2005 SPECIAL COMPETITION:
Biocomplexity in the Environment This competition continues NSF support of the Biocomplexity in the Environment Priority Area and promotes comprehensive, integrated investigations of environmental systems using advanced scientific and engineering methods. The concept of biocomplexity stresses the richness of biological systems and their capacity for adaptation and self-organizing behavior. By placing biocomplexity studies in an environmental context, this competition emphasizes research with the following characteristics: (a) a high degree of interdisciplinarity; (b) a focus on complex environmental systems that includes non-human biota or humans; and (c) a focus on systems with high potential for exhibiting non-linear behavior.

ACTIVITIES
WE provides co-ordination and communication for community environment-related activities within the Catchment. The group clarifies and develops concerns raised by the local community, and makes decisions and plans for action.
An important role of WE is as a forum for groups and individuals to share and publicise their achievements. This is done through:
    Community Information days
Sharing up-to-date knowledge on a wide range of issues with community organisations, research and management agencies.
    Regular open community meetings
To make decisions, activities and plans for Harbour Catchment activities.
    Newsletters
Produced quarterly and distributed to all mail addresses in the catchment and to other interested stakeholders.
    Website
    Collating existing information
Information is stored at Raglan library and displayed at the Waikato District Council offices at Raglan.
    Collecting new information:
Through a collaborative project between community groups and resource management agencies, WE are developing a Community Volunteer Monitoring project focusing on catchment water quality and the health and abundance of estuarine and marine species.
