Basic Policy The emission of CO from the combustion of coal has been cited as one of the main causes of global warming. Coal burning is intimately connected with economic activity and energy consumption in daily life, and demand for electric power which makes possible our present standard of living is growing year by year in parallel with the development of an advanced information society, the rising demand for amenity, and the overall economic development of society. Meanwhile, amid calls for the creation of a society that puts less of a burden on the environment, Okinawa Electric Power (OEPC), as a supplier of energy, is well aware of its three vital social missions to provide a stable supply of electric power; to help protect the regional environment; and to contribute to the development of the regional economy. A more orderly and coordinated reinstatement of water, however, is urgently required to ensure greater coherence and long-term sustainability of these remedial efforts. Click on image to download (8.29 Mb) These Landsat 7 satellite images contrast changes (highlighted in red) in May 2002 and May 2003, when spring snow melt in the highlands of Anatolia and Zagors mountains typically caused the Tigris and Euphrates rivers to flood and the marshlands to reach their maximum extent. As has been the case over the past decade, dams and drainage canals prevented the rivers from cresting and flowing into the marshlands in May 2002. When control structures were opened and levees broken by mechanical diggers in April and May 2003, however, water swept through the desiccated landscape inundating some areas. In these false colour images (bands 7,4,2), swollen rivers and canals and flooded areas appear black.

Hydro-electricity is clean, renewable energy. The building of hydro-electric schemes does, however, involve significant changes to the environment. Moving on from the construction and visual effects of hydro-electric schemes, Hydro Tasmania ensures the ongoing health of its water resource. To that end, Hydro Tasmania has a comprehensive Aquatic Environmental Program, committing over $1 million dollars annually towards managing its water resources in an environmentally sustainable manner. The program incorporates such activities as the Waterway Health Monitoring Program, and the ongoing Water Management Review. The latter is a four-stage process involving the community in the decisions about water management, and is planned for each one of Hydro Tasmania's catchments. Hydro Tasmania takes its environmental responsibilities seriously, and is proactive in anticipating legislative change. By the time the 2000 Tasmanian Water Management Act was legislated, Hydro Tasmania had already delivered a number of changes to its water management practices. These achievements were recognised when Hydro Tasmania won the Government Business and infrastructure Awards for Environmental Excellence for its Aquatic Environmental Program in 2000.

Acting to Protect the Great Lakes
In the 30 years since the signing of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, many remarkable achievements have been made in restoring the Great Lakes Basin ecosystem to health. These accomplishments are investments in the economic and social well-being of the region as a whole, for present and future inhabitants. Various levels of government, municipalities, industries and citizens have joined forces in these efforts - demonstrating the importance of cooperation and information sharing in fostering positive change. The Government of Canada recognizes its role in protecting the valuable natural resource that is the Great Lakes Basin.
A Proud History of Great Lakes Initiatives
The Great Lakes are cleaner today than they have been for 50 years, but many factors continue to threaten their health. Population growth, coupled with rapid industrial development, means increased risk to the ecosystem in the form of higher water consumption, natural resource depletion, escalating waste and air emissions, more intensive land use, and demands for more recreational space.

Article Creating a Learning-Rich Preschool Environment at Home Related Links It's easy and inexpensive to create a home environment that is rich with educational opportunities for your young children. Children learn through play, and learning is best when all of a child's senses are stimulated. ~ Music ~ Music stirs emotions and, when used in positive ways, sets up a pleasing and stimulating backdrop for children's play time activities. Classical music is often a good choice for background music. There are many recordings available that are specifically designed for children, but the truth is, practically any recording that a child enjoys will suffice. One of our favorite children's recordings is Hunk-ta-Bunk-ta Chants by Indie artist, Katherine Dines. This recording features a compilation of chants from around the world. Chants not only stir powerful emotion, they are a deliciously fun way to encourage language arts skills. The rhythm and repetition of chants helps lay the foundation for acquiring language, and even though many songs on the album include words from different languages, they nurture a child's imagination, stir poetic imagery, and "train" their minds to appreciate rhythm and syntax.
