    Environmental Activities of PDA
PDA has been a pioneer in the implementation of environmental programs in rural Thailand. These programs are designed both to demonstrate and to educate children, villagers and government officials in alternative methods of waste treatment, water purification, re-forestation, irrigation, sustainable agriculture and habitat preservation. Often the environmental aspects of PDA projects are an integral part of s greater rural development initiative. This page has links to the programs in operation, some of which are covered by the SEED project, others by the TBIRD projects. The Student Environmental Education and Demonstration (SEED) project, funded primarily by the Danish Cooperation for Environment and Development (DANCED) organisation, is a major initiative in bringing about environmental change in Thailand. The project provides relevant and comprehensive education to primary and secondary school students, initiates ecologically sustainable environmental practices and increases the business sector involvement in environmental activities. Follow the link for detailed information on the SEED projects aims and outcomes.

Environment Environmental work Graninge's environmental work In 1996 Graninge began focusing its environmental activities in order to obtain environmental certification. Graninge has always strived to work in harmony with the environment, not least because the company has relied on natural resources in the form of both forest and water since its formation in 1673. Today all of Graninge's operations are certified according to the international environmental standard ISO 14001. The certification applies to all of Graninge's activities in Sweden and our subsidiaries Graninge Kalmar, Graninge Energia and Graninge Kainuun have their own environmental certifications. This means that the company addresses environmental issues in an effective manner, from the establishment of ambitious environmental goals to detailed follow-up of our performance. The objective is to continuously reduce our environmental impact and to act as a driving force for environmental sustainability in the energy industry. The structure of Graninge's environmental activities has been improved through the implementation of our environmental management system. This structure is illustrated in Graninge's green thread, where the Group's significant environmental aspects (environmental effects) are tied together with the environmental policy, the overall environmental goals and the performance indicators we use to measure our operations. These performance indicators are presented in our

    Global Environmental Charter
Established in 1992 to supplement our corporate philosophy statement, the MEW Global Environmental Charter is a document setting out in 8 paragraphs and 22 clauses our commitments for sustained development in harmony with the global environment. Intended to raise awareness of global environmental protection among all employees and to establish clearly defined standards, it embodies the guiding principles of our environmental activities.
    MEW Environmental Policy
Our Environmental Policy was first announced in October 1996 and revised in April 2000, when it was extended to the 12 manufacturing subsidiaries to create a uniform corporate policy which is the basis of our environmental conservation activities.
    Philosophy
In line with its Global Environmental Protection Charter and the ISO14001 standards, Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd., aspires to the creation of a human society which lives in harmony with the natural environment and practises sustainable development.
    Policies
To give concrete form to the Environmental Policy, MEW will formulate and implement a Mid-Range Environmental Plan with specific targets for each year.

Existing European chemicals legislation does not deliver the goods . It does not provide sufficient knowledge of, or public information about, the chemicals in use, and it is ineffective in controlling dangerous substances. Regulatory action on even highly hazardous chemicals, like Asbestos or PCB, comes too late to prevent huge health and environmental damages (see EEA report: "Late lessons from early warnings: the precautionary principle 1996-2000"
