(a)Goals and Objectives Teaching by the Entomology Department reflects the broad nature of the departmental mission, ranging from basic aspects of arthropod ecology, morphology, parasitology, physiology, systematics, and toxicology to applied subjects in apiculture, agricultural, medical and veterinary pest management. Our objectives are to offer a wide range of introductory courses aimed at informing and exciting undergraduates about arthropod biology, comprehensive courses for training of undergraduate majors, and advanced course work for outstanding graduate student education. All courses are designed to complement, rather than duplicate, ongoing programs in other departments or divisions at Cornell. The Virgina Tech Entomology Department is located in Price Hall on the Virginia Tech Campus. The entomology department provides a graduate program leading to the M.S. (thesis or non-thesis) and Ph.D. Its purpose is to offer training in basic and applied entomology through a combination of graduate courses, research programs, and teaching experience. Graduate research programs may deal with a variety of entomological topics including basic biological studies (ecology, systematics, physiology, toxicology, morphology), environmental assessment and pesticide management, biological control, sustainable agriculture and integrated pest management, computer aided decision making, and urban, aquatic, and forest entomology.
Laboratories and equipment are available for graduate students to carry on their research. These include facilities for rearing insects, such as constant temperature rooms, cabinets and greenhouse rooms for rearing plants, a beneficial insect quarantine laboratory, genetic stock center for cockroaches, and laboratory facilities for biochemical and physiological research. The department has the largest collection of insects in Virginia. Five off-campus laboratories for research on specialized insect problems are located at research stations in diverse geographical, topographical, and agricultural sections of the state. Computing facilities on campus are utilized from numerous personal computers and terminals located in Price Hall. The department maintains an information systems and insect studies laboratory which is well equipped with computers and software. Statistical analysis, weather records, systems models and numerous other software packages are available for student use.

GENERAL GRADUATE SCHOOL INFORMATION Graduate Programs and Opportunities
The Department of Entomology offers programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Courses of study emphasize independent thought and scholarly endeavor in both basic and applied areas of insect science. Departmental programs include chemical ecology and natural products chemistry, medical and veterinary entomology, physiology, behavior, systematics, ecology, integrated pest management and social insect biology. Participation in these programs requires a background in the fundamental biological and physical sciences as well as proficiency in basic entomological topics. Financial Aid
Research assistantships are available from the Department of Entomology. Stipends for 2002-2003 range from $15,400 to $16,045 (.5 FTE) with out-of-state tuition waived. Fee waiver scholarships may also be available. Persons holding assistantships are eligible for a 10% discount for purchases made through the University bookstore. Fellowships may be obtained through the Graduate College. Special recruitment scholarships are available for minority students. Graduate work-study funds are also available for eligible persons. Applications for financial assistance should accompany admission application forms. There are two training grants in biology, which fund several graduate students in Entomology.

Courses Offered FAQ Program Highlights Application Information ... Home Distance Masters Degree in Entomology Introduction and Background on the Degree Program The Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) offers a full curriculum distance M.S. degree in Entomology. The distance option emphasizes course work in entomology and flexibility in non-entomological training specific to individual student needs and interests. The distance M.S. option was developed for students who cannot participate in an on-campus degree program. Intended audiences for this degree are individuals actively involved in entomologically related professions where advanced training in entomology is desirable, as well as those seeking such positions. Examples include agricultural professionals, crop consultants, pest control operators, and high school science and biology teachers. Students enrolled in the distance program will have the opportunity to apply the training they receive in this program to their individual professions. In the Department of Entomology, we strive to build programs designed to meet the needs of our students! Here are a few highlights:
  • The Distance M.S. in Entomology degree program follows the requirements for an Option III masters degree. These requirements are determined by the UNL’s Graduate College.

Information is presented in two formats: taxonomically and geographically.
Within the taxonomic format several different annotations may appear. These signify the following: P (in "species" field) = pupal specimen(s) [These appear as an entry separate from adult specimens of the same taxon]. L (in "species" field) = larval specimen(s) [These appear as an entry separate from adult specimens of the same taxon]. MS (in "species" field) = manuscript name; validity of this name is in question.

Entomology at College Park traces back to the beginning of the Maryland Agricultural College, which was the forerunner of the present University of Maryland. Townend Glover was the first entomologist, recruited in 1859; he had earlier served as the U.S. Government's first entomologist in the Bureau of Agriculture. Entomology as a Department was first mentioned in the College in 1887. Thus, the science of entomology has been taught at the University of Maryland since the very beginning of entomology as a profession and academic discipline in the U.S. The Department of Entomology resides in the College of Life Sciences and the Chair reports directly to the Dean. Additionally, the Chair works closely with the Dean of Agriculture since about two-thirds of the Department's core funds originate from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources The Department exists to meet both the immediate need for instruction in the science of Entomology at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels, and a long-term need to maintain and extend the frontiers of scientific knowledge.
