SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES J. Wagner, et al. - Clemson University, Department of Geological Sciences There are many standards-based, proven curriculum programs currently in existence which lend themselves very well to professional development opportunities that will not only give teachers experience working with earth science content, but will also provide exemplary materials for these teachers to take into their classrooms and share with their students. Field based professional development activities are also encouraged because they provide teachers with first hand knowledge and hands-on experience with geological processes in action. Hands-on experience with rocks and minerals, fossils, soil samples, weather instruments, telescopes, topographic and weather maps, satellite images and aerial photographs, seismographs, and environmental problems will also aid the teacher in providing more inquiry-based lessons for their students. K-12 Review Team 1 Kitty Farnell
    1) Provide workshops with naturalists (like Rudy Mancke) and field biologists (like Dr. Joe Culin) that help teachers understand relationships in nature.

The major emphasis of our expeditions is wilderness living. Most of our time is spent in a variety of wild environments: alpine, rain forest, beach, tundra, and desert canyon. We go into these areas with an awareness that only with careful use will the fragile balance of wilderness be preserved for future generations. TESTIMONIAL Melanie had a very positive experience this summer and took much pride in her ability to be a part of such a great and diverse group. We have seen a remarkable difference in her outlook on life since she got home. She has become more focused at school and has taken on several leadership roles. Thank you again for helping our daughter become a more mature and caring person as a result of the wonderful experiences she had this summer.

Raleigh, North Carolina To make these trips more meaningful, we share valuable background information concerning the human and natural history and ecology of each area prior to entering it. Our backcountry camping usually finds us traveling through wilderness areas, moving camp daily. Each trip usually includes either a layover day, or two or more short hiking days so there is ample time for us to explore, photograph the scenery, sketch, or pursue similar individual interests. Occasionally, we'll use a layover day from a base camp for a day hike to an area of exceptional beauty or for a summit climb of a nearby peak.

his is not an entomology course,” says Entomology Department Professor John Meyer of his course, Entomology 525: Entomology for Educators. “It’s actually a biology and ecology course for teachers where insects are used as paradigms.”
In other words, bugs are a means, not an end in this course. And a very perfect means, according to Meyer, who says, “Arthropods make great examples of practically every biological and ecological principle.” Entomology 525, taught during spring semester from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings, is targeted to middle school and high school teachers and to science education students who are planning to teach. “I also would like to attract more elementary school teachers,” says Meyer, who advertises the course in a radius of a two-hour drive from Raleigh. So far, teachers taking his course have come from Fayetteville, Sanford, Chapel Hill and Wilmington, as well as Wake County. There have been some remarkable results: After taking Entomology for Educators, Rita Hagevik, a Raleigh middle school teacher, was able to come up with a unique science project suggestion for student Marife Ortega. Hagevik, taking a cue from Dr. Jim Smith, an RTP entomologist who volunteers with Meyer’s class, guided Marife’s experiment in assaying the blood of stink bugs for compounds that suppress the growth of bacteria. Marife not only won first place in that school science fair, but, with versions of the project as she progressed into high school, she also won in regional and state fairs.

Being life-long learners, teachers change their pedagogical methods throughout their careers. The concepts being taught are recapitulated and modified, or sometimes revamped. Teachers must continuously relearn information in order to impart accurate knowledge. Forensic science is the application of scientific knowledge to legal issues. Any science (including but not limited to anthropology, chemistry, handwriting analysis, entomology, biology and pathology) that is used for or with any type of criminal investigation falls under the auspices of forensic science.
