FHC HOME

Families Honoring Christ
"It is better to grow a child than to repair a man."
June 6, 1993
This month's FHC letter is a set of loosely related discussions which come from further discussions of last month's discussion of "Certification", a paper our son Joel wrote expanding some of those concepts, and a letter we received from the US Taxpayer's Party. The CHEO Convention (Christian Home Educator's of Ohio) is in July as well as a family wedding. Consequently, you probably won't hear from us again until August or September depending upon what the Lord gives us to share. Teaching not Testing This article comes from a piece written by our son Joel. We have added some examples to the end, but the work is primarily his. Many homeschooling families have problems with certain children. They say (and often rightly so) that this child just does not have a desire to learn, views schoolwork as a bore, and just doesn't seem very academically oriented. Following is one diagnosis that in some cases may prove to be helpful. The problem lies in expecting a child to do that which he has not been taught to do. When Joel was in first grade (or perhaps subsequent grades), he had particular difficulty doing a creative writing assignment. While there may have been other issues involved, one basic problem was that he was told to write this story when he did not have the foggiest idea how to begin. This was repeated throughout his school experience.

Part I Listening Comprehension (20 minutes) Section A
Directions:
In this section, you will hear 10 short conversations. At the end o f each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. Both the conv ersation and the question will be spoken only once. After each question there wi ll be a pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices marked A), B), C ) and D), and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding lette r on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.
Example : You will hear:
You will read: A) 2 hours. B) 3 hours.
C) 4 hours D) 5 hours.
From the conversation we know that the two are talking about some work they will start at 9 o'clock in the morning and have to finish at 2 in the afternoon. Therefore, D) "5 hours" is the correct answer. You should choose £ÛD£Ýon the An swer Sheet and mark it with a single a sinle line through the centre.
Sample Answer
£ÛA£Ý£ÛB£Ý£ÛC£Ý £ÛD£Ý 1. A) Buy some traveller's checks.

Hi Twinstar,

I am not an English Major. I taught other subjects,at Elementary, Secondary, and College levels. Now,after retirement,I like to teach (volunteer) ESOL classes, without going through a coursework or certification program. Is there a curriculum that is available for purchase or on computer or at any other source? Also, if there is a friendly English teacher who can be a guide for me in my new adventure please let me know. Thanks
