Introduction
Welcome to this site. On this page you will find teaching activities for English - especially reading. These are intended for use by teachers and pupils at KS2 and KS3 of the National Curriculum for England and Wales. They may be helpful for teachers and students working at other levels. Although this page concentrates on reading, most activities will require pupils to speak and listen and to write at different times. If you are a pupil, you may be able to work on your own. If this is too hard, your teacher will help you. Remember that this site is written for children and grown-ups, in primary, junior and secondary schools, as well as teachers and other visitors.

Other ways to stimulate reading 'My students don't read in their own language. How on earth can I get them to read in English?' The best pre-reading activity is when a student picks up a book, looks at the cover, flips through the book and then settles down to read. But how can we get to that point? The tried and tested activities presented here are all aimed at stimulating that desire to read. They can be used to foster individual reading or to introduce a class reader. They are described here largely as whole class activities but are well suited for use on pre-reading workcards. The advantage of keeping the activities on workcards is that individuals can do them when they are choosing what to read next. Remember that you don't have to prepare these activities yourself. Nearly all of them are ones that the students can prepare themselves. Using the cover Ask students to predict what the book is about from the title and cover picture. '

Reading
Reading is more than the decoding of written words into sound. Reading is a complex communication process which requires thought and individual construction of meaning. Reading instruction at the Middle Level takes into consideration the general developmental needs of the students as well as their individual reading abilities. When considering the reading needs of Middle Level students, it is important to realize that all readers (ineffective readers, average readers, and proficient readers) differ considerably in their interests, aptitudes, personalities, backgrounds, and learning styles. Their varied needs can be addressed successfully in a reading program that includes features such as the following:
  • Silent reading is modelled by the teacher and class time is provided for students to engage in sustained silent reading.
  • The teacher regularly reads aloud to the students.

annah More, having abandoned her sparkling social life with the London intellectual elite, as well as her career as poet and playwright, took up her pen in support of her evangelical interests. Teaching the poor and ignorant to read she became concerned about providing reading material commensurate with the motivation of her schools. When she found little that was appropriate, she spearheaded a project to provide a series of inexpensive publications that came to be called the Cheap Repository Tracts . Published during 1795-1798, these little booklets included poetry, Bible stories and simple allegories with theological meaning, and tales of fictional instruction designed to inculcate homely virtues and habits of sound living. The list of financial contributors to the project included Prime Minister Pitt (Wilberforce's intimate friend), the Archbishop of Canterbury, and numerous other bishops. [Pickering, John Locke and Children's Books , 121f.] Pickering's title is suggestive in the light of Richard Brantley's theme of Locke's influence on later thinkers through Wesley. He has some very interesting material in particular on Isaac Watts (pp. 17f), the dissenting minister whose
