    Comprehension
Comprehension involves making or gathering meaning from texts print. This meaning encompasses three interdependent levels of understanding: literal, inferential or interpretive, and evaluative or applied. This means that when students read, view or listen, they are exploring three questions:
    • What is being said? What does it mean? What do I think or do about it?
Effective approaches to comprehension develop meaning at all three levels. They involve students in a range of roles as readers, and are contextualised in or framed by activities in which students bring their own experiences and knowledge to texts. Such activities include:
    • research reading and discussion of literature tracking of a story or issue as it unfolds in the media reading, discussing and analysing newspaper articles

Chapter 1 Worksheet Since the students will be responsible for reading most of this novel at home, Collie and Slater recommend providing them with worksheets to facilitate comprehension of the text (p. 38). It is especially important to provide worksheets at the beginning of a novel in order to help the students gain better access the new information. These worksheets will also provide the initial material for class discussions. After the students discuss answers in class, I will post the answers to the class website.
    Snowball Summary

    Worksheet: Allusion
For non-native speakers of English, understanding allusion in English texts can be quite challenging. Many times the students have trouble differentiating the literal from the non-literal. However, in order to understand the richness of a piece of literature, it is important to understand the allusions. Therefore, this worksheet will be geared towards pointing out instances of allusion in this text and allowing the students the opportunity to explore what they might be referring to. Have the students work in groups to come up with the meaning of the allusions listed on the worksheet. Have each group write one meaning on the board. After all of the meanings have been agreed upon, post them to the class website. Chapter 4 Worksheet In chapter 4, a new character (Zaphod Beeblebrox) is introduced. In order to help the students get more familiar with this character, I recommend an at-home T/F worksheet with statements about this character as a guide for home reading. Have the students correct any of the statements that are false.

    Reading Workshop
for fluent Readers From the MCPS Early Literacy Guide What is reading workshop? What happens during independent reading? How is reading workshop structured? What happens during the sharing portion? ... How can teachers effectively introduce the structure of reading workshop?
    What is reading workshop?
Reading workshop is one way of organizing a balanced literacy program. The purpose of reading workshop is to promote fluency and to provide an occasion to promote the love of reading and to learn about texts in various ways. Reading workshop builds a community of readers as students receive support from their peers and interact with others to develop good literacy habits. Reading workshop is not intended to replace guided reading groups where specific needs are addressed in a flexible, small group setting. All students should have opportunities to meet in guided reading groups for explicit instruction with new learnings. Teachers can meet with guided reading groups and /or conference with individual students during independent reading. These are complimentary components that need to be a part of the Balanced Literacy Program.
    How is reading workshop structured?

TITLE: Reading Comprehension in English for Tourism: A Corpus-based Approach Author: Alejandro Curado Fuentes Institution: Universidad de Extremadura (Spain) E-mail:
    ABSTRACT
Business and Tourism studies tend to integrate foreign language learning at our university. However, the reduced number of obligatory English courses currently demonstrates a less strong bonding with such subjects. Our ESP (English for Specific Purposes) syllabi, given these institutional constraints, must be based on a direct and specific approach to content and pedagogic criteria. Putting it differently, we must try to adjust the material to particular needs in the working environment by following real demands and interests from the academic and professional worlds. In ESP, our method relies on detailed information taken from questionnaires, interviews, and tests for the evaluation and measurement of interests, demands and needs in the target context, i.e., the business / firm as the future workplace (cf. Munby, 1978; Donna, 2000).
The aim of this presentation is to describe our evaluation method for Tourism English regarding one of the major communicative skills, reading. The main reason for focusing on this particular ability is the decreasing habit of reading, mentioned above, in contrast with some years before. In addition, as also stated, the growth of interest in the use of computers and internet for class and work (corroborated by the demanding use of electronic readings in the business world Warschauer, 2002 and the tourism sector Cerdá Redondo, 2002) motivates our research. We focus on reading comprehension skills as a form of training by means of various elements: Not only text (word and image) in paper form, but also electronic formats (e.g., advertisements on the web).
