Cast a spell with these easy activities from FamilyFun by Mary Leonhardt
of 5 Helping children fall in love with books has been a personal crusade of mine for two decades, both as a high school English teacher and a mother of three. In observing my students over the years, I've discovered that avid readers acquire their love of reading at home, from their parents. No teacher can pass along a passion for books the way a loving mother or father can. My best readers remember cozy bedtime stories, sharing books with friends and siblings, andperhaps most importantthe freedom and encouragement to read whatever they wanted to. What follows are some tips for nurturing an early love of reading. These ideas are offered as a jumping-off point; all children are different, and what works for one child may not work for another. The key thing to remember is that anything to do with reading and writing needs to be fun. If you tune into your child's interests and passions, you'll be able to develop your own strategies for giving him a lifelong love of readingin my view, the best gift we parents can give our children.

Q : Can you advise teachers who want to build a strong reading program for English Language Learners? What are the steps they should take?
A : Designing a strong reading program for this diverse group of learners requires an understanding of the characteristics of ELL children. While there is no preeminent reading program for English Language Learners, the best programs are usually designed to serve the needs of a particular group of ELLs and recognize the strong relationship between language development and literacy skills.
It becomes of paramount importance, especially with older learners, to consider cultural orientation in literacy education when there is a dominant group of English Language Learners in the classroom. The students' cultural knowledge and their interpretation of 'literacy' that comes from parents and family become important factors to consider. Embedding cultural knowledge into instruction can help to make it more relevant and meaningful for students. Furthermore, establishing home-school communication and involving parents has proved effective in promoting literacy for this group of learners, although this happens less frequently than one might expect.

Reading and the Adult English Language Learner
by Carol VanDuzer
National Center for ESL Literacy Education
This digest reviews reading approaches, identifies characteristics of fluent readers, and makes suggestions for developing reading instruction for adult English language learners.
Reading Approaches
Most of what is known about reading comes from first language reading research. English as a second language (ESL) teachers need to consider how this research may or may not apply to reading in a second language. The following is a discussion of the approaches behind reading instruction.
Phonics.
Psycholinguistic.
Through the late 1960s and 1970s, the psycholinguistic or "top down" approach to reading, where meaning takes precedence over structure, became dominant. Although readers make use of sound-letter correspondence and syntactic knowledge, they draw on their experiential background knowledge (schema) to predict the meaning of the text and then read to confirm or correct their predictions (Goodman, 1967; Smith, 1971).

53. ERC
english 105/6/7 Approximately 682 english 105/6/7 students use thecomputers weekly to complete reading and vocabulary activities.
http://www.grossmont.edu/gctechplans/erc.htm
English Reading Center (ERC) Description The English Reading Center (ERC) functions as a place for any student to receive tutorial assistance in reading and vocabulary study and for English 105/6/7 students to complete assigned activities. As per plans outlined in the previous Tech Plan, during the summer of 2002, the ERC moved to room 545 and underwent a remodel to better utilize space, but without any gain in square footage. Used by both walk-in students and English 105/6/7 students, the new location houses 25 new Pentium computers installed during summer 2002. Software available includes Ultimate Speed Reader and WordSmart . Students also have access to the Internet to search for assigned reading activities.
Curriculum Impact
The students enrolled in English 105/6/7 and Project Success classes especially benefit from the tutoring services available because both the tutorial services and the computer software are targeted to support their vocabulary and reading curricular requirements. However, all services currently available are beneficial to any student who seeks to improve reading and vocabulary skills. In its new configuration, the ERC continues to serve a growing number of students. As the ERC is used concurrently by both walk-in students and English 105/6/7students who must use the computers to complete assignments, restricted space continues to be problematic. Additionally, as more growth in the college’s student population is anticipated and because the English Department is particularly sensitive to serving the needs of the diverse student population, the English Department is preparing to add study skills to the tutoring services available. With this expansion of services coupled with continued student growth, it is essential that the ERC continually evaluate a means to secure more space to serve the students, continue recruiting qualified tutors, and review the available software for currency and appropriateness.

Reading Instruction of English Language Learners
by Georgia E. Garcia

University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign D) The Sheltering of English Reading Instruction A number of excellent texts are available that discuss how teachers can use ESL techniques to shelter or support the English reading instruction of English Language Learners (see the references at the end of the paper). In planning literacy instruction in English for English Language Learners, teachers need to think about how to shelter their use of English so that it is comprehensible, adapt early literacy activities so that they are effective, and use content-based ESL instruction to facilitate the English reading and writing of English Language Learners. Sheltering English. Adapting commonly used literacy activities. Content-based ESL instruction. At the beginning of class, in the first instructional activity, the teacher asked the students to correct a sentence on the board in English about life in a pond ("a pond is a home two meny animals?"). Next, they wrote the corrected sentence down in their journals. In the second instructional activity, the teacher read the picture book Where is my duckling? aloud to the students, encouraging them to identify the various animals that were in the illustrations.

Summer Reading List for 10 Advanced Placement Prep English
You are responsible for reading four books this summer. Three are mandatory and one may be chosen from the second list below. Each has an assignment "note" sheet that works with what you think about the book. You are encouraged to participate in this activity with a co-reader, whether it is a peer, a friend, or a parent and complete together the Reading File activity for each book. The "File" will help you remember details when you need them for the course essays. All reading activities are considered pre-requisites for the course; therefore, all activities must be presented to Mrs. Armstrong at the beginning of the fall course in August, whether or not you are in the fall course. In other words, spring semester course participants are required to do the summer reading activities in the summer. This helps to broaden the pool of students to work with on the readings, provides a stronger incentive to complete the readings, and gives each student a usable guide to help with the assessment essays given in the first weeks of the course. Second semester students will be provided with their completed Reading Files prior to writing these essays. Students who are not prepared to enter the class will have an opportunity to explain their situations and complete the readings and activities only within the first week of the fall semester. Assessment will then be made as to the student's entrance status. Failure to meet the commitment to the course within the allotted time will necessitate the student' s removal from AP-Prep English.
