    After reading activities
Imagining Changing Writing Speaking ... Conclusion As always our aim is for the students to have fun and enjoy reading because it is through enjoyment that learning comes. Thus effective after reading activities use the book as a springboard into active language use rather than try and wring every drop of meaning out of it. Time spent reading another book is better spent than time dissecting the last one! Imagining These activities ask students to use their imaginations. Ask them to guess what the main characters have in their pockets, handbags, or desk drawers. Play 'Hollywood' and choose which film stars would play which characters. Why not ask them to 'flesh out' the characters by making up a lot more personal details about them? Ask students to imagine that they are in the story as an extra character: what happens? Choose events in the story which are mentioned but not fully described and ask students to fill in all the details. Ask students to imagine that the characters are all animals, or trees, or fruit. What kind of animal, fruit or tree would they be and why? Ask students to think of a popular song, film or TV programme which would make a good title for the book. A great activity is when groups of students mime episodes from the book (perhaps while you (or a student) read the relevant section out).

But it looked like a real check. So, just for a joke, he deposited the check into his bank account. He was very surprised, a few days later, to find out that the bank had accepted his check and he now had $100,000 in his account! Read the rest of the story (9 parts) to find out what happened. Gareth Rees, teacher and materials writer, London Metropolitan University Topical news stories are a great source of teaching material. This article presents different ways to exploit news reports in the classroom and focuses on raising the level of involvement and participation that the students have in the lesson. Selection criteria It is important that you choose your news article wisely. You should consider the following criteria.
    • Appropriacy of topic
Will your students be interested in the topic? Will it be upsetting for some students? Is it suitable for the age group?
    • Length
Be careful to avoid articles that are particularly long. Reading a news report in a second language is demanding, and if the article is too long it will discourage students. If the news report is lengthy, do not be afraid of editing. The style of news articles often means that entire paragraphs can be omitted without affecting the overall sense of the piece.
    • Language content
Besides the general interest in the topic, this may well be the most important selection criteria. Does the article contain a useful lexical set (crime, money)? Are there some good grammar exponents (past perfect, reported speech) or interesting syntax and sentence style? These will provide the basis of your language work on the text, how can the language be exploited?

    Reading
Reading is a constructive meaning-based act which, depending upon purpose, background knowledge, and reading task, requires readers to use a variety of skills and strategies before, during, and after reading. It is a process that develops over a long period of time and through extensive practice.
The goal is to help students become fluent, independent, strategic readers. According to the International Reading Association (1999), reading requires teachers to help students develop:
    • motivation to read extensively
    • appropriate active strategies to construct meaning from print
    • sufficient background information and vocabulary to foster reading comprehension
    • ability to read fluently
    • ability to decode unfamiliar words
    • skills and knowledge to understand how phonemes or speech sounds are connected to print.
When developing students' reading skills and strategies, consider the following guidelines. A sample planning guide and teacher checklist are also provided at the end of this section to support the development of students' reading abilities.
    1. Provide students with many opportunities to read.
