Welcome to the Biomedical Engineering Department
Founded in 1997, our department continues to grow and benefit from our collegial relationship with our world-renowned medical school. We now have ten (soon to be fourteen) full-time faculty and more than 270 undergraduate and 70 graduate students.
  • Bird's eye view of our new home: In Dec., 2002 we moved into The Uncas A. Whitaker Hall for Biomedical Engineering. We are enjoying classes and research in this splendid, state-of-the-art teaching and research facility. For more photos click here.
  • Of note The average starting job offers for our 2003 undergraduate BME majors was $55,888 more than $10,000 above the national average.
  • New Faculty Jianmin Cui, Igor Efimov and Yoram Rudy all currently biomedical engineering faculty at Case Western Reserve University, will be joining our faculty next summer. Dennis Barbour, MD/PhD from Johns Hopkins University, will be joining us in the fall of 2004. We are eagerly awaiting the new research and teaching activities they will bring to our growing department.
  • New Program We are pleased to announce a new three-year MS-BME/MBA Program beginning fall 2004. Because of the lateness of this announcement, the deadline for applications, for this program only, is extended to April 23, 2004. Apply by clicking the link below.

Two slabs of the earth's crust suddenly slide past one another, releasing huge amounts of energy in the form of vibrations, which pass through the deep crust and along the surface as waves. The waves move from side to side, or up and down, shaking everything indiscriminately: roads, bridges, buildings large and small. And when the shaking stops, some structures are heaps of rubble, while others still stand. One side of a street is destroyed; the other seems undamaged. Traffic still streams on a freeway nearby, yet an elevated highway a mile away lies collapsed.
