GVL started in Summer 1995. In its first year it attracted half a million "hits."
Then W3G was formed to publish EJGE and iGEM; GVL is now back to its origins, as a comprehensive link catalog. GVL is made up of a number of web pages for various categories, such as universities, companies, etc.
Update [Jan. 97] The above note was posted in October 1996. Since then the geotech web site has attracted another half a million hits.
Update #2 [July 1997] The above update is now obsolete GVL is now 3 years old and a hit count is 1.5 millon!

Industrial Engineering
Victor is employed by a company that manufactures parts for the automobile industry. He started his career working on a project called the Custom Work Sheet System (CWSS) and essentially was assigned the job of helping improve the system that drives his company's entire work flow. The system he designed provides workers with the information they need to complete their jobs. Through development of this comprehensive information system, even inexperienced workers have all the instructions they need to safely complete the many custom orders coming through their work stations. Now Victor's responsibilities include a variety of duties on the main chassis line. He recently conducted a training session where he taught a group of 50 employees how to use the new PC- based order tracking and inventory system. Each worker on the assembly line has electronic access to the parts inventory and general supplies area and can order just the materials they will need to complete the work for that day. This keeps the assembly areas neat and allows workers a greater role in planning their own work day. Does he do this alone? ...No. Victor works with a team of seven other industrial engineers and practically the entire manufacturing force to ensure that the workers in the plant have the correct tools, training and materials to get their jobs done efficiently, safely and with high quality. That's what makes industrial engineering different. Industrial engineers deal with people as well as things. They look at the "big picture" of what makes a system perform best—the right combination of human resources, natural resources, and man-made structures and equipment.

  • Contract: Architectural Degradation Against Software Misuse
Overview: Software has become the driving force behind most new technologies. But the engineering of software is becoming increasingly complicated. A software engineer must balance a variety of competing factors, including functionality, quality, performance, safety, usability, time to market, and cost. Moreover, the size of software systems that are being built is rapidly growing. Mission Statement: The Software Engineering Research Laboratory (SERL) in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder is pursuing the discovery of principles and the development of technologies to support the engineering of large, complex software systems. The challenging targets for this work are organizations and software systems operating in the wide-area, heterogeneous, distributed, and decentralized context of wide-area networks such as the Internet. Current Events: No events found.

Simulation - An Enabling Technology in Software Engineering
Alan M. Christie

Software Engineering Institute Abstract: This paper suggests that the software engineering community could exploit simulation to much greater advantage. There are several reasons for this. First, the Office of the Secretary of Defense has indicated that simulation will play a significant role in the acquisition of defense-related systems to cut costs, improve reliability and bring systems into operation more rapidly. Second, there many areas where simulation can be applied to support software development and acquisition. Such areas include requirements specification, process improvement, architecture trade-off analysis and product line practices. Third, commercial simulation technology, capable of supporting software development needs is now mature, is easy to use, is of low cost and is readily available. What's so great about simulation?

Figures from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that 2.7 to 3.0 million people die each year worldwide from causes linked to air pollution. Atmospheric pollutants also create aesthetic problems in the form of hazy air or unpleasant odors. Anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (e.g., carbon dioxide and methane) are being associated with global climate change. The theme of this issue is devoted to air pollution: sources, impacts, and mitigation. To put air pollution in perspective, it is useful to contrast it with water pollution, for which we have had active control programs for over a century. Unlike those of water pollution, the damaging effects of air pollution on human health are extremely insidious. While water pollution causes spectacularly swift and sometimes fatal diseases, such as cholera, typhoid and amoebic dysentery, air pollution related illnesses are mostly long term and are silent killers. Often the debilitating and prolonged illnesses caused by air pollution are not linked to their cause for years, in a fashion similar to society's response to the ill effects of cigarette smoking.
