Agricultural Engineering Bruce works for a worldwide, nonprofit organization that develops safer and better farming techniques. He knows that every year 40,000 people die from unnecessary exposure to pesticides. Most of the deaths occur in developing countries, where farmer often spill small amounts of toxic material on their skin while diluting concentrated pesticides for use in hand sprayers. He must develop a reliable and inexpensive device to transfer concentrated pesticide from the supply container to the sprayer without risk of spillage. Bruce proposes and tests a simple piston pump. He makes needed design improvements and his organization makes the drawings available to local manufacturers in several countries. He is pleased that his work is likely to improve the health of farmers and save lives. Sarah works for an irrigation company. Her firm has been asked to develop an irrigation system for a large citrus company located in an arid area in close proximity to a major city. She knows that water availability for agricultural production is a major political interest in the community as is the dumping of the city's waste water into nearby streams. She suggests that the city's waste water, which is of accepting quality, be utilized as irrigation water and submits design studies that show how this can be done. Her solution helps both the citrus producer and the city in meeting their objectives.
