On Writing Engineering Cases
(Proceedings of ASEE National Conference on Engineering Case Studies, March 1979) by Geza Kardos Carleton University , Ottawa, Ontario.
and C.O. Smith , University of Nebraska, Omaha, Nebraska This paper is also available in clear text form, and in WordPerfect format.
Contents
Introduction.
With wider acceptance and use of Engineering Cases in engineering education, there is a new form of engineering writing available. This paper presents some ideas based on our experience with cases over the last ten years, including writing over 25 cases (good or bad), assisting with several student-written cases, using cases extensively in our courses, and reviewing many cases, e.g., for Engineering Education. Use of Engineering Cases is still in its infancy; as use matures, things will change. We have adopted many ideas suggested by colleagues reviewing our cases. We have also drawn heavily on ideas from case writing for business schools. We do not view this as a definitive paper on case writing. We present these ideas as a compilation which may be useful to those who are considering writing cases and wonder what it is about. We also offer our compilation to seasoned case writers as a position with which to differ.

Even small outages can affect shipments or production, and when a company ships over 100 million containers a year, small interruptions can mean big expenses. DIR-9012252 Instructor's Guide Introduction To The Case On January 28, 1986, seven astronauts were killed when the space shuttle they were piloting, the Challenger, exploded just over a minute into the flight. The failure of the solid rocket booster O-rings to seat properly allowed hot combustion gases to leak from the side of the booster and burn through the external fuel tank. The failure of the O-ring was attributed to several factors, including faulty design of the solid rocket boosters, insufficient low- temperature testing of the O-ring material and the joints that the O-ring sealed, and lack of proper communication between different levels of NASA management. Instructor Guidelines Questions for Class Discussion
  • What could NASA management have done differently? What, if anything, could their subordinates have done differently? What should Roger Boisjoly have done differently (if anything)? In answering this question, keep in mind that at his age, the prospect of finding a new job if he was fired was slim. He also had a family to support. What do you (the students) see as your future engineering professional responsibilities in relation to both being loyal to management and protecting the public welfare?

San Diego City Council Public Art Policy
    Background
In 1992, the San Diego City Council adopted a public art policy which promoted artist involvement at the inception of selected City design and building projects. The policy development, and the philosophy underlying it, were the work of the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture. This legislation was distinguished from other public art policy in the USA in the following ways:-
    • A percent of the project construction costs was not set aside in a separate fund as a budget for artwork. The Commission and City department staff negotiated artist involvement in design and building projects on a case-by-case basis. This included determination of the artist's role, which ranged from serving as the design team lead to participating as an integral member of the design team to creating individual artworks that are not dependent on the project design and construction process. Most artist involvement began at the inception of the project and was integral to the design.

    Management and Professional Responsibility
in a Changing World by Sharon Beder
The image and status of the engineering profession is declining as the public identifies engineers with controversial and environmentally damaging technologies. Engineers are too often characterised as being male, socially inept, politically naive and aligned with selfserving developers. They are finding themselves at the centre of controversies they don't fully understand. Increasingly engineers are subjected to law suits because the public, which has an unrealistic perception of the nature of engineering, blames them when things go wrong. Engineering appears to be at a turning point. It is evolving from an occupation that provides employers and clients with competent technical advice to a profession that serves the community in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. Increasingly engineers themselves and their professional societies aspire to be broadbased professionals. Employers are also requiring more from their engineering employees than technical proficiency. Engineering in the modern world involves many social skills. There is also an increasing need for engineers to choose technological solutions that are appropriate to their social context and to give consideration to the longterm impacts of their work, if only because the work of engineers can have wideranging effects. Today's technologies can impact on the whole globe and they can impact on future generations. Never before has there been such a moral imperative to consider what may have been thought of as unintended consequences in the past.
