The Qwest for Knowledge Figuring out exactly what is in your own enterprise and how it is all configured is a daunting task. However, throw mergers, acquisitions, and a constantly changing business environment into the fray and your IT department might be ready to surrender. In 2000, Qwest took a big step up in size and reach with the acquisition of U S WEST, the 120-year old telecom giant that served 14 states throughout the West. This merger created a company with a unique set of assets. U S WEST provided local telephone service to most of the western United States and Qwest was already an acknowledged leader in network technology, as well as applications and services. Qwest's advanced fiber optic networks link directly to nearly 30 million customers. The company also has a rapidly growing presence in Europe, where its network connects 68 cities in 18 countries. It has a foothold in Asia through a new Asia-Pacific office and interests in the US-Japan Cable project. Qwest's IT staff had a sound vision of what a standard configuration should look like, but how could they be expected to reasonably harvest and monitor the configurations of every single server and workstation in a now super-sized enterprise? In addition, how could they possibly be expected to secure such a bewildering assortment of assets?

Siebel Customers Achieve Measurable Results
Before Siebel CRM
"To be successful, we need to closely coordinate our activities with each account so we stay in lock-step with the customer from the early design phase to production. [However], we had systems and databases located throughout the world, and it seemed as though every field sales engineer and field application engineer had his or her own version of a spreadsheet. This made it extremely difficult to present a single face to customers during the design process. Additionally, we lacked real-time visibility into the status of our accounts, so we could not react to our customers as efficiently as we wanted."
-Altera Corporation After Siebel CRM
"During the design engineering process, for example, Altera field application and field service engineers-as well as Altera distributors-have a unified view of all activities associated with each opportunity. Having all opportunity data in a single system greatly improves our visibility into the revenue pipeline. Having a consolidated view of all opportunity data gives us a deeper understanding of what we need to do to be successful."

Before Siebel CRM
"Until 2000, Asyst relied on a complex forecasting system that did not provide adequate visibility into market demand. Working with Excel spreadsheets, the company's 30 account managers submitted four separate and unlinked forecasts every month. The system was built on 'Kentucky windage,' where you hold a finger into the wind to make adjustments to your targeting. It wasn't accurate, it wasn't driven by customer knowledge, and it wasn't effective. We never knew exactly what our inventory needs were, and we had problems with incomplete shipments and late deliveries."

Situation BDT's autoloader systems allows companies to automate their tape storage backup processes. As the autoloader rotates, it feeds tapes in and out of the tape drive, thus eliminating the need for manual intervention and the potential for human error. As BDT prepared to roll out their autoloader for use with Quantum's SDLT220 and SDLT320 drives, the company needed a clear picture of how well this system would work on a number of OS (operating system) and ISV (Independent Software Vendor) combinations. Solution BDT turned to Percept Technology Labs for Percept's extensive OS+ISV cross-platform expertise. Percept was able to quickly set up the testing environment to observe and analyze the BDT product's functionality across a matrix of OS+ISV combinations . BDT delivered two autoloader systems to Percept, and Percept's staff began to gather initial data and run preliminary testing immediately. A week after Percept received the units, an engineer from BDT joined the Percept testing team, working side by side for the next three days. In a collaborative effort, BDT's engineer participated in the process and learned from Percept's OS+ISV expertise. After testing the product on a number of ISV backup software packages running on several operating systems, BDT's engineer returned to Germany and Percept finished the remainder of the testing.

When Neuroscience labs in the University of Montreal were required to port a "legacy" ISA-based data acquisition system to a National Instruments Multifunction DAQ PCI-based system, the software engineer sought out a means to speed up the process whilst ensuring that performance was not compromised. WinDriver provided a user-friendly tool that would enable easy user mode development of PCI drivers running under Windows 2000 while meeting the performance requirements of the system. The in-house project for the Neuroscience Group at the University, to be part of the department's custom-made software family, includes data acquisition, experiment control and video analysis applications that had previously been developed in-house. This particular project was a real-time data acquisition application used in several research labs that are part of the CRSN (Centre de Recherche en Sciences Neurologiques - Neurological Science Research Center) at the University of Montreal. The research labs conduct experiments in which data is acquired in different configurations for each particular experiment. The software application (called Sinai) had to be generic in that it had to fit the data configuration acquisition for each type of experiment. The software is interrupt-driven real-time data acquisition software using National-Instruments (NI) DAQ PCI-boards. High performance was an important criteria as the system has to handle a massive amount of data and processing in real-time. For example acquire/store to disk/display on screen- of multiple groups of channels simultaneously, with each group consisting of 1 to 64 channels of analog data at between 1 to 100Khz sample rate. Some of the data must be analyzed in real-time for event detection, and output some analog/digital control signals with less than 1 ms accuracy. Experiments can last from a few seconds to a few hours and, in most cases, also need to be synchronized to different external events (e.g TTL signals or video time-code generators).

What Customers are doing with ScopeTools for VxWorks Lockheed Martin uses MemScope to eliminate memory leaks top
In the process of evaluating new software, Lockheed Martin discovered a periodic memory leak. They reviewed all the known dynamic memory allocations and also tried to correlate the frequency and size of the allocations, but the problem remained a mystery. Lockheed Martin and Wind River Services fired up MemScope and quickly located the problem a template file, for a high-level language, that was initializing a character-string object. The high-level language runtime support was performing internal optimizations to minimize the number of times it called malloc( ), effectively masking the true size and frequency of the leak. After a one-line change to this template, the memory problem was completely eliminated.

Just across the street from the World Trade Center, MCU's headquarters was covered by thick clouds of dust and falling debris in the aftermath of the attacks. The credit union, which provides financial services to 300,000 city, state and federal employees and health care workers, faced a real emergency. Forced to evacuate to a site in nearby Battery Park, MCU asked its computer vendor, Steve Sylvia of Interactive Digital, to help move its HP AlphaServer, ProLiant and StorageWorks systems to the new location. Steve called on partner Total Tec Systems, which had recently installed MCU's fibre channel storage area network, for technical support.

Refinement Advanced Techniques Group, Land Rover
Land Rover was recently evaluating the use of LMS's Optimus design optimisation product in assessing the effect of engine mountings on in-car noise. Although it is intuitive that there will be some relationship, the precise nature depends critically on the design of the vehicle. The problem at Land Rover was to determine which mountings would have most effect on the in-vehicle noise for a given design. Once this was known, the designers could focus their efforts on the critical mountings. Land Rover already used Platform Computing's LSF queuing system to manage their central computing resource. However, they lacked a way to fully exploit resources at the desktop. Because of this, a Design Of Experiment run using Optimus took over 27 hours, thus locking up one desktop machine and preventing the engineer at that machine from working. This effectively prohibited the Group at Land Rover from performing the experiment. When coupled with INTREPID, the same run took only 6 hours, enabling the engineer to set up the experiment in the day, run it overnight and collect the results in the morning.
