print Field Engineer Reporting System
Replace the paper-based systems used to collect and report field information with a web-based workflow application.
The Field Engineer Reporting System automates the data collection, submission, and various follow-up activities related to the company's engineering services. The system features e-form versions of the Call Report, Equipment Service Report, and Project Report used to collect valuable engineering information and report to HQ. A series of workflow screens has replaced the complex, time consuming manual process used to follow-up and monitor field activities. Normalizing the data with a set of master files (Customer, Contacts, Engineering Codes, and several others) has improved the communication between the field and office staff and provided management with precise measurements of all activities. As an aid to the field staff, sales information from a legacy database is imported into the SQL table and can be accessed via a web-based Sales Report.

The Year in Industry
Student's Story Engineering Education Scheme

EES gave me exposure to business and got me into a lot of mechanics and electronics. I was part of a team linked to Thames Water, asked to design a test rig for biological filter media. We surprised ourselves, especially when the company told us they would build four prototypes based on our design!
The Year in Industry
Working as a Quality Engineer for BP Chemicals Composite Materials, I was asked to implement Statistical Process Control into the aerospace products final assembly area. I taught myself the techniques. It was difficult, as ours was low batch production, but we reduced defects by 70%!
This experience proved a real bonus when I applied to GKN for vacation work. GKN had just taken over the BP subsidiary where I had done my year out and the interviewer had read my project reports. I was told ‘We know all about you: you are exactly the type of person we are looking for!’ That interview led to vacation work, final year sponsorship and a place on the GKN International Leadership Development Programme.
Graduate Position
The ILDP gives you practical experience and exposure to different GKN businesses, different countries and cultures. My assignments were in UK, US and Brazil. I was always given responsibility and all the way through I had plenty of opportunities to learn and develop.

Safe Routes to School: Case Studies
Examples of programs from around the country
By Bruce Appleyard (used by permission of the author)
The following case studies highlight some of the experiences and lessons learned from communities nationwide who have initiated efforts to encourage children to walk and bike by making the journey to school safer.
Parkmead, California
Inspired by the work of Donald Appleyard in his book, Livable Streets
In the survey, parents suggested that traffic has a multiplier effect. They said they drove their children to school because of it. They also said that traffic speed is a major concern. Finally, the lack of sidewalks was identified as another major deterrent to allowing children to walk to school.
In 1996, this mapping exercise and survey helped identify the location and type of improvements needed, and helped the community secure a $40,000 California Transit Development Act grant to build a sidewalk along one of its heavily trafficked streets.

Here, my role is to provide support to design engineers and senior design engineers alike, as well as to pursue my own research-based activities, which are currently Analogue and Mixed Signal (AMS) ASIC's. I am confident of the fact that, without a physics bias, I would not be able to speak with any sort of authority on electronics issues, because most problems, when discussed in detail, come back to physics after all. Over my career, I have four patents (pending) on various techniques of instrumentation and control. I think that the biggest difference working in the aerospace sector, as opposed to the commercial, is that all designs have to be understood over the military temperature range (-55oC to +125oC), where there are fewer components available: however, high integrity is still an obvious requirement. It is this attention to detail that still holds great interest for me.

The benefits and contributions engineers can make Case studies Project work Project work plays an important part in the students' learning in the area of technology. It is in this work that engineers can make a special contribution. Engineers can assist students to achieve technological literacy by demonstrating technological practice. The engineers' input gives a comprehensive overview of all three strands of the technology curriculum. Neighbourhood Engineers can: Help the students understand the use and operation of technologies, and their principles and systems. Neighbourhood engineers can provide an expert technological knowledge base for teachers to utilise. An information session, with the students, can be organised to outline the general theory and principles of the technology being used. Help the students identify the needs, problems and opportunities of the project. Engineers can help implement the unit of work in the classroom by bringing their problem-solving experience to generate ideas. They can encourage lateral thinking of students with questions whilst emphasising the important aspects of feasibility, costs and efficiency. They may also assist in developing and testing alternative solutions, by modelling, making, testing, and sometimes are able to make resources available, such as computer assisted design packages.

JSR 166 Case Study: A Transparent Expert Group
While the Java Community Process (JCP) program has done well to keep its rules open for public scrutiny, the same cannot be said about the workings of individual expert groups. Until recently, expert groups were discouraged from openly airing their strategies, motivations, specifications, Reference Implementations (RIs), and Technology Compatibility Kits (TCKs) until the official schedule permitted the gathering of community and public feedback on the specification only. Never mind that such late and limited feedback was no longer useful for the current revision. By then, expert groups were running full throttle to attain final approval from the group that seemed to matter most the Executive Committee.
That's not to say that no attention was paid to those who took the time to comment. It's just that any significant changes were typically rolled into a subsequent revision of the spec. According to Onno Kluyt, director of the JCP Program Management Office (PMO), this disturbing trend was noticed, and rules were recently changed to mandate transparency in expert group activity. ( See JSR 215
Doug Lea Having worked on open source projects for years, Doug Lea is convinced transparency is a far superior approach for the JCP. An active professor in the Computer Science Department, State University of New York at Oswego, Lea serves on the Executive Committee and leads JSR 166. When he submitted the Java Specification Request for 166, he was eager to use his expert group to illustrate precisely how much better the process could be. The result is that the JSR 166 Concurrency Utilities expert group worked in open view of the public and those who truly matter: future users and implementors of the spec.

TIGER Case Studies
The Benefits of TIGER on Offshore Drilling Platforms
Incident #1 A gas turbine on an oil platform is always started on distillate fuel oil. The engineer on site noticed that the gas turbine was unstable during start-up - a problem that had been ongoing. The engineer notified his maintenance support team who, using TIGER, remotely connected to the offshore platform and checked the diagnostic information collected during the start-up. It was quickly determined that the liquid fuel was oscillating between the and 5 MW power levels. Using the information available via TIGER the problem was diagnosed as a sticking bypass valve. This problem was very difficult to diagnose on the platform given the operating environment, particularly for the site engineer who would have had to change a number of components and then attempt another restart to see if the problem was solved. In addition, a variety of replacement components are not always available on the platform, which further curtails this type of effort to resolve the problem. If the turbine failed to start due to these oscillations - a very high possibility - then the platform would have lost this power source. By being able to diagnose and correct the problem, the use of TIGER'S diagnostic analysis helped to avoid a probable future trip and shutdown, which would have caused at least 5 hours downtime on the platform.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
A project such as this cannot be the work of just one person. Although, as principal investigator, I accept full responsibility for the flaws in the project, credit for whatever merits it has must be shared with many others. First and foremost, I thank the more than 50 practicing engineers for their time and thoughtfulness in providing us with illustrations that gave us ideas for our case studies. The interviews ranged from one hour to more than five hours with an engineer who met with us on two occasions. One company provided us with access to its employees for an entire working day. Not only did these engineers provide us with a wealth of ideas, their enthusiasm for our project was a continual source of support. Special thanks go to my co-principal investigator, James Jaksa (Communication), who shared interviewing responsibilities for the project (even sacrificing a week-long Spring Break to talk with engineers). He also wrote preliminary drafts of many of the cases. My Philosophy colleagues John Dilworth and Joseph Ellin served as consultants on the project. John Dilworth designed the software shell for the case studies and provided commentary on twenty cases. He also tried out many of the cases in his business ethics classes. Joseph Ellin wrote commentaries on more than twenty-five of the cases. In addition, I had two graduate assistants during the three years of the project. David Zacker assisted during the first two years of the project. He helped John Dilworth with the software design, created program files for cases, interviewed engineers, and wrote earlier versions of cases. Charles Marsh assisted in the third year, refining the software versions of cases and helping prepare the final set of materials available for classroom use.

Wise Technologies, based in Landover, MD, is the largest wireless hot spot provider on the east coast. Their solutions are currently being used in a wide variety of locations including cafes, restaurants, airports, train stations, and offices.
Wise Technologies needed high speed Internet access for its more than 100 locations throughout Maryland, DC and Virginia. In order to meet ROI targets, Wise needed to find services for each location that met their specific performance and cost requirements. Finding suitable solutions was especially complicated because of the number locations and their geographic diversity. The additional responsibility associated with establishing and managing relationships with multiple carriers quickly overwhelmed Wies's technical staff.
