Read about how PTC software has helped these companies achieve a true competitive advantage in their industry Project: Octopus Tissue Stabilization System The Octopus is a single arm heart tissue stabilizer for immobilizing the epicardium during beating heart surgery. Using Pro/ENGINEER, Medtronic saved six months by reducing the iteration time of the early concepts, cutting the tooling delivery time in half, and reducing iteration time later in the design cycle. The reduced time to market of six months resulted in increased revenues for that product line by over $4,000,000. Manufacturing engineer Steve Dertien states, "Pro/ENGINEER allowed us to see form, fit, and function before any costly molds or prototypes were developed." Medtronic completes designs in less time without having to be delayed for mold changes or new prototypes." Project: Verrazano Fan Hunter's Verrazano Fan's metal and natural wood finishes give it a bold, industrial look. Project engineer Joey Magno, Jr. says, "During development, we realized that heat from the light fixture could cause problems with the capacitor. When we tried to move the capacitor farther away, the lack of space made it difficult to get the capacitor in the right position. We were able to fit the part in the right spot and ensure the proper clearance by visualizing the process in 3D and using Pro/ASSEMBLY's packaging feature."

'I joined the infrastructure technology group at Black and Veatch straight after graduating with a MEng degree in mechanical engineering from Kingston University. I am following the monitored professional development scheme (MPDS) of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and have now reached the middle of my second year of technical training. Black and Veatch supports the personal development of their employees intensively and this has given me the opportunity to undertake essential training to improve and diversify my skills. My development plan is synchronised with the IMechE MPDS.

Matt
Matt is a structural engineer with Parsons Brinckerhoff, a large multinational civil engineering consultancy firm, concerned with infrastructure consultancy. This is an American company with offices throughout the world. He successfully completed a three-year BEng in Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham. Prior to going to university he gained A-levels in maths, physics and geography with a view to going to university to study civil engineering. He had a very clear interest in a career in building and structures when he made his A-level choices.

Chapter 15: Case Studies
by Philip Greenspun , part of Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing This chapter contains six case studies, each with some actual source code. I present user interface, interaction design, and data modeling ideas that should be useful to you in many contexts. This chapter is not a step-by-step guide. If it were, it would be 800 pages long, absurdly boring, and extremely tool-specific. Because I'm afraid that your eyes will glaze over and you'll skip this, I'll try to give you a hint of what is in store. Case 1 is straightforward and dull. It is intended to help you understand how AOLserver Tcl works with a simple mailing list registration application. Feel free to skip it. Case 2 shows how to generalize this application so that many static Web services can share a single RDBMS-backed service. It is a powerful idea that I have used at least a dozen times. Case 3, the birthday reminder system, introduces the idea that less can be more. It does less than a calendar management program but is easier to use. Case 3 also demonstrates how to build a back-end to loop through a database table and send e-mail when necessary. In doing so, it addresses in a practical way an important question about concurrency and RDBMS. Case 4, the bulletin board system, shows how important it is to have all of your services run from the same database management system and users table. It also raises the interesting issue of whether a 99 percent reliable system isn't better than a 100 percent reliable system. Case 5, ArsDigita Quizze, shows how to use a server-side database to keep session state, preserve a user's ability to go back and forward on pages, yet keep the user from using the Back button to cheat on a quiz. Case 6 covers the Uptime server monitoring system and brings up issues of maintainability for public Internet services.

    Abstract:
Systems failures do not occur in a vacuum; while a single event may trigger the failure, investigation often reveals that a history of managerial and technical decisions produce conditions turning a single event into a disaster. At the minimum, investigating case studies provides lessons on what to avoid. By systematic studies of failure, it may be possible to draw general conclusins and improve practice as a whole. Unfortunately, good systems failure studies are rare. Embedded systems failure is a volatile topic and the field is filled with a vast amount of noise, urban myth, and political agendas. In order to build case studies, engineers must develop some investigative skill. We discuss sources of case studies, examples of the good case studies that do exist and what techniques can be used to separate noise from real information.

Engineers aren't perfect: systems fail for for various reasons, ranging from inevitable hardware breakdowns to avoidable loss of morale. However, the accidents that result in system failures are not unique and have often been encountered before. For this reason, case studies are a valuable tool for designers: design is a discipline best learned by example, and examples of failures are as illustrative as studies of successes.

She then went to work for a software company as a bookkeeper and wages clerk. 'I started answering the phones, often taking calls from people with computer problems,' Caroline remembers. 'Technical people such as computer programmers are not always very good at communicating with non-technical people and I found I was a good go-between, helping to sort out the difficulties.' She also became interested in computers. So, three years ago, she answered an ad in the local paper for her present job, pleased to see that no qualifications were needed. She now spends part of her time on the help desk, dealing with computer problems by phone, and the rest of her time visiting the trust's different sites, correcting faults and installing new equipment.

My classified ad system case (number 7) has some source code that works with the Illustra RDBMS and the AOLserver.
