Chemical and Biological Changes in Cumbrian Lakes due to Decreases in Acid Deposition (N/01/00059) 2000
There is chemical evidence for acidification reversal in surface waters of the Lake District, and studies of stream water invertebrates and bacteria have provided evidence for biological recovery (see N/01/0057). In this study, further investigations were performed in order to consolidate the chemical data recorded 1999 in the Upper Duddon Catchment, and to add a further biological component by examining changes in lake water diatom (brown algae) assemblages.

Assessment of Acidification Reversal in Surface Waters of the Pennines (N/01/00058) 2000
The southern Pennines are among the most highly impacted areas of the UK with respect to acid deposition. At its peak, around 1970, the deposition of pollutant sulphur was ca. 6g m-2 a-1, but this had fallen by a factor of approximately three by the late 1990s. The objectives of this project were to assess the available data of 3 Yorkshire reservoirs in order to determine whether the reservoir chemical changes could be explained quantitatively by the changes in deposition. The results provide quanititative evidence that the increases in pH observed in the reservoirs over the past 20-30 years are due to the decline in atmospheric deposition sulphur.

E-Mail This Article Published on Monday, October 1, 2001 in the Seattle Times Environmental Issues Will Resurface As Truce Ends by Elizabeth Shogren and Deborah Schoch of the Los Angeles Times Stilled by the events of Sept. 11, strong disagreements over the environment could resurface as early as this week to test the political truce in Washington, D.C. Lawmakers are poised to resume a partisan fight over oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And as they return to the nation's domestic agenda, they must contend with global warming, national forest protections, arsenic in drinking water and air quality. All are issues that had put the environment near the center of the policy divide separating the White House and congressional Democrats. That divide all but disappeared, or so it seemed, as Washington came together in response to the terrorist attacks. Major environmental groups laid down their swords, some purging their Web sites of anti-Bush rhetoric, delaying direct-mail appeals and encouraging members to redirect donations to rescue efforts, such as the American Red Cross. Now, signs of renewed strife are emerging as some Senate Republicans seek to make domestic energy a national-security issue, and dissenters rise to argue that a national emergency does not require sacrificing environmental goals.

Contact us The Environmental Issues Of Electricity Production The variety of fuels used to generate electricity all have some impact on the environment. Fossil fuel power plants release air pollution, require large amounts of cooling water, and can mar large tracts of land during the mining process. Nuclear power plants are generating and accumulating copious quantities of radioactive waste that currently lack any repository. Even renewable energy facilities can affect wildlife (fish and birds), involve hazardous wastes, or require cooling water. For specifics on any issue:

Environmental Issues
BlackRhinoceros is an international resource for activism in all areas of environmental concern. The 'Actions' promoted on this site are updated or checked daily. The web of almost universally interlinked green issues is divided into these six areas or categories: biodiversity : uphold animal rights and the survival of threatened and endangered species; advocate safe food
conservation
: promote the reuse and recycling of materials, energy and resources
energy
: work for safe, renewable and efficient sources of energy; halt global warming
environmental justice
: expose and oppose corporate abuse; work with those safeguarding indigenous people and sustainable population growth
habitat
: preserve and regenerate invaluable natural habitats by world region and by ecological type
pollution
: reduce destruction of the atmosphere and water systems as well as chemical and industrial damage and noise pollution These issues pages on this site aggregate key factual and campaign points category by category. Because of the overlap between many areas of environmental issues many Actions appear more than once in the BlackRhinoceros Actions pages . For example the destruction of coastline for offshore oil-drilling is relevant to each of Energy and Pollution, Habitat and Conservation; all relevant Actions will appear in all four categories.

Railways have many environmental advantages and the most significant is the low energy consumption. This is due to the fact that steel wheels running on steel rails have a very low friction. Furthermore, the fixed schedule and driving patterns increases the possibility for energy efficient driving and thus reduces the energy consumption compared to other modes. Sustainable Development Strategy
The first Sustainable Development Strategy for the Department was published in December 2002. It aims to enable the Department to address the challenges and opportunities posed by the increasing need to find more sustainable ways of doing business. The Strategy provides a path for both the Department and enterprises to achieve sustainable development by setting tangible objectives and actions over a period of time, which will be reviewed and revised at regular intervals. Four priority strategic areas have been selected for initial focus over a three-year period (2003 - 2005) and these are:

"Contemporary American culture, founded on the original material wealth of the continent, on its timber, ores, and furs, has become a culture that devours the earth. ... There are two schools of thought on how to rectify this high rate of consumption, which most Western thinkers agree is unsustainable and likely wrongheaded if not disastrous. First, there are technical approaches. No matter how sophisticated or innovative these may be, they finally seem only clever or artful adjustments, not solutions. Secondly, we can consider a change in attitude toward nature, adopting a fundamentally different way of thinking about it than we have previously had, perhaps ever had as human beings. The insight of aboriginal peoples are of inestimable value here in rethinking our relationships with the natural world; but the solution to our plight is likely to be something no other culture has ever thought of." - Barry Lopez, 'The Passing Wisdom of Birds', in Crossing Open Ground The Gaia Hypothesis - Shaping the environment by life itself

Dr. Marburger sets out a formidable challengeone that requires fundamental change in the purpose and scope of environmental science. Cleanup isn't enough; we must take a far more proactive view of environmental issues, one that considers the intricate network of ramifications that decisions, missions and activities have on each other and the environment. At PNNL that means driving science to solve complex environmental issues for government and industry. We lead the environmental industry by focusing on prevention and prediction to help clients avoid problems before they occur. Our research capabilities and strategic partnerships with leading industries and universities make this possible. We are moving forward in three areas: environmental security, environmental sustainability and environmental sentinels. Our research and technology in environmental security helps nations prevent or recover from attacks that affect the environment. For example, the Coastal Security Institute at the PNNL Marine Sciences Laboratory is developing a concept for sensor networks that will constantly monitor ocean conditions and exchange information on minute changes in the chemical, biological or radiological content of the water. These sensors will cover wider areas than current sensing methods and provide near real-time feedback.

As oil prices rise, amid uncertainties in the Middle East, it was encouraging to note the wide support for renewable forms of energy (including small hydro, wind, solar and biomass) shown at the Renewables 2004 meeting in Bonn last week (See: Global support for renewable energy

For some, including China and Germany, it was a chance to announce new renewable energy targets. But, so far, the European Commission has hesitated to look beyond the existing target for 2010, which calls for renewables to provide 12 per cent of energy consumption in the 15 EU countries and 21 per cent of electricity use across the enlarged EU of 25 countries.
Indeed, the Commission appears doubtful that even these can be achieved.
