PDF NEW - Dennis Talks About the Environment Thanks to advances in renewables, there are fewer technical obstacles to energy independence for our country. There are many political obstacles but the oil, auto and electric utility corporations wouldn't be directing energy policy in a Kucinich White House. I will spur research and investment in "alternative" energy sources such as hydrogen, solar, wind and ocean, and make them mainstream. Clean energy technologies will produce new jobs. We can and must double our energy from renewable sources by 2010. And we can very soon have hybrid and fuel cell cars dominating the market. When I was Mayor of Cleveland, I defended public ownership of utilities; as President, I would expand it. As an environmentalist, my view is always holistic and global: a Kucinich Administration would launch a "Global Green Deal" a major initiative to use our country's leadership in sustainable energy production to provide jobs to Americans, to reduce energy use here at home, and to partner with developing nations to provide their people with inexpensive, local renewable energy technologies. As a citizen of Planet Earth, I want this project for the same reason I would sign the Kyoto climate change treaty because we need it for our children and our grandchildren.

China tackles environmental issues
August 5, 1999 Web posted at: 10:22 a.m. EDT (1422 GMT) BEIJING (CNN) Over the past decade, the Chinese people have made extraordinary economic strides tens of millions of people have escaped tremendous poverty. But that growth has come at a price air and water pollution that is killing and sickening people as well as cutting productivity. The Chinese government is in a precarious position: it can't stop the newfound progress but realizes that as energy consumption skyrockets, things will only get worse. Correspondent Marsha Walton reports on some efforts by non-governmental organizations to use technology to ease China's environmental growing pains.

Project Description
N E conducts research on the physical aspects of information technology, focusing on resource flows, energy use, and environmental impacts associated with computing and network equipment. To accomplish this goal, our researchers track equipment sales, materials use and reuse, energy use, and emissions. We also estimate stocks of equipment based on lifetimes and survey data.
Such information is essential for addressing questions like:
  • "What direct effect will the explosion in computing and communications technologies have on electricity use in the U.S.?"
  • "What are the net environmental and resource effects of telecommuting or web-based commerce?"
  • "How many computers exist in the U.S., how much energy do they use, how fast are they being replaced, and where do obsolete computers go once retired?"
Our research covers all parts of the information technology supply chain, including manufacturing, distribution, purchasing, use, and final disposal of all types of computing and communication network systems. It also includes indirect effects on industrial processes and institutional structures insofar as these effects relate to energy use and environmental impacts.

Cold-Water Corals Need Protection, Environment Agency Says
Threat to obscure life forms highlighted on World Environment Day 5 June 2004 Cold-water corals are more widespread in the ocean's depths than previously recognized, and they are threatened by human encroachments such as deep-sea trawling, offshore oil drilling, telecommunication cables and waste disposal, an international environment agency reports. The U.N. Environment Program (UNEP) released a study on these deep-water life forms in recognition of World Environment Day June 5.

ABSTRACT: ABSTRACT: ABSTRACT: This unit is written for the seventh grade students at Arsenal Middle School. Arsenal is an urban school in Pittsburgh, PA. We currently are a pilot school for the High Performance Schools. It is the goal of this program to teach children that decisions they make affect the Earth. Currently the program focuses on chemicals used in the building, this unit will focus on choices made in energy consumption affecting the planet. Now that Pennsylvanians can choose their energy supplier this will empower students to make knowledgeable choices when the time comes. Seventh grade students will explore the transportation crisis, how do we travel in a vehicle in an economic and friendly manner.
ABSTRACT: This unit is designed to fit the needs of all elementary children. Many times when one thinks of science they have a vision of vigorous high level activities. This unit will not only challenge the highest level student but also bring success to the lowest level student. Integrated in this unit are all the disciplines of education. It especially focuses on Language Arts and Technology, therefore, this unit will incorporate standards in science, communications and mathematics.

http://www.nautilus.org/energy/
Friday, October 17, 2003
The Nautilus Institute's analyzes the nexus of energy, security, and environmental issues in NORTHEAST ASIA. Based on this analysis policy initiatives are developed. The twin fields of "environmental security" and "energy security," as applied in Northeast Asia, underlie much of the program's work. The program was started in 1996. Projects East Asia Energy Futures Project
The East Asia Energy Futures Project is developing an analytic foundation and framework for understanding alternative energy futures in Northeast Asia. Go to Project Page. Power Grid Interconnection in Northeast Asia The aim of the Grid Project was to provide a forum for the sharing of current research related to regional grid issues among experts from the region, as well as to create an opportunity to hear the perspectives from individual countries toward potential grid interconnections. The first workshop on power grid interconnection in Northeast Asia was held in May 2001. Go to Project Page. DPRK Renewable Energy Project
The US-DPRK Village Wind Power Pilot Project is the first attempt by a US non-governmental organization to work side-by-side with North Koreans in cooperative energy development. The project installed seven wind turbine towers in a rural village on the west coast of North Korea. The wind energy provides clean, renewable energy to the village's medical clinic, kindergarten, and households. The project is seen as a stepping stone from which North Korea can enter the international development community.

Linking environmental issues leads to expanded views
"...environment and energy research initiatives are critical for achieving sustained economic growth while ensuring national energy security and a healthy environment."
At PNNL that means driving science to solve complex environmental issues for government and industry. We lead the environmental industry by focusing on prevention and prediction to help clients avoid problems before they occur. Our research capabilities and strategic partnerships with leading industries and universities make this possible. We are moving forward in three areas: environmental security, environmental sustainability and environmental sentinels. Our research and technology in environmental security helps nations prevent or recover from attacks that affect the environment. For example, the Coastal Security Institute at the PNNL Marine Sciences Laboratory is developing a concept for sensor networks that will constantly monitor ocean conditions and exchange information on minute changes in the chemical, biological or radiological content of the water. These sensors will cover wider areas than current sensing methods and provide near real-time feedback. Our research in environmental sustainability is creating the scientific underpinnings for reducing the environmental impacts of energy conversion and economic development. Activities range from legacy waste cleanup to developing catalytic processes for converting biomass to energy and value-added chemicals, and microchemical reaction technology for highly efficient energy conversion.
