    Environment 2010 Strategy
Nine serious environmental issues need to be dealt with if New Zealand is to justify its claim to be a "clean green" country.
These issues and the goals the Government wants to achieve, are outlined in the Environment 2010 Strategy released in October 1994.
New Zealand's Highest Priority Environmental Issues
    1. Protecting Indigenous Habitats and Biological Diversity
    Issues and Examples
90 percent of our wetlands have been drained or degraded; lowland forest areas have been reduced to 15 percent of their pre-Maori extent; only 10 percent of the tall tussock grassland that existed in 1840 still remains.
Half of our endemic bird species have become extinct since people first came to New Zealand. About 500 species of animals and plants are now threatened.
Goal To protect indigenous habitats and to maintain biological diversity, by protecting representative examples of all indigenous ecosystems and by maintaining and enhancing the net total area of New Zealand's remaining indigenous forests and enhancing the quality of other remaining indigenous vegetation.
    2. Managing Pests, Weeds and Diseases

Wind Energy Manual Iowa Energy Center Aesthetics and Visibility The visibility of a particular wind system will depend on many factors, including tower height, proximity to neighbors and roadways, local terrain, and tree coverage. Some people may object to a wind turbine being in their field of view, and this could be an issue when applying for a zoning permit. Therefore it may be worthwhile to investigate your neighbors' concerns before investing in a wind turbine. In most areas of the state, wind turbines are an uncommon sight, so it is natural to expect some reservations about their introduction. Objections are more likely to occur in populated and tourist areas. Opposition is least likely to surface in rural settings. Noise Factors The most characteristic sounds of a wind turbine are the "swish...swish...swish" of its turning blades and the whirring of the generator. Improved designs have made wind turbines much quieter over the last decade. Within several hundred feet of a machine, these sounds may be distinguishable from the background noise of local traffic or the wind blowing through the trees, but they usually are not disruptive or objectionable. The impact on any particular neighbor will depend on how close they live, whether they are upwind or downwind, and the level of other noise sources such as traffic.

http://www.leonardoacademy.org
Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener sm Program is focused on supporting the use of markets as a tool for reducing pollution and increasing energy efficiency and renewable energy. This program empowers people with information on energy and the environment, and encourages businesses and consumers to lead the way to a cleaner, greener, healthier environment. Companies that reduce or offset their emissions are eligible to receive the Certified Cleaner and Greener sm Seal . This seal allows consumers to identify environmentally-responsible companies that are working to reduce the pollution that contributes to climate change, smog, and acid rain. The Cleaner and Greener sm Principles for Pollution Reduction Programs propose a new approach to environmental regulation that rewards emission reductions delivered by energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sequestration projects. Visit www.cleanerandgreener.org to find out more about the Cleaner and Greener sm Program. Mission of Leonardo Academy Leonardo Academy Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing issues affecting people and the environment on an interdisciplinary basis. Leonardo Academy's mission includes addressing environmental issues, energy issues, and sustainability. Leonardo Academy's work includes policy and technical analysis of energy and environmental issues as well as energy and environmental education. Striving for Environmental Excellence
Protecting people and the environment is a fundamental part of The ChevronTexaco Way. Responsible environmental stewardship of all aspects of our operations and our products is not only an expression of our values but also a business imperative.
We understand and share the concerns many people have about the potential environmental effects associated with the development and consumption of energy. These concerns range from effects on air or water quality to community health in a particular location to the ways our industry and the use of our products can contribute to global climate change.
Our goal is to be recognized and admired for environmental excellence. We are proud of the ways we are progressing toward that goal, such as making sustained improvements in our energy efficiency. We also are committed to further integrating environmental considerations into our business decisions and enhancing how we manage and measure our environmental performance. We are committed to continually improving our processes for minimizing pollution and waste, conserving natural resources, responsibly stewarding our products, and enhancing our broader understanding and management of the environmental aspects of our businesses.
ChevronTexaco's Health, Environment and Safety Policy provides the framework for our approach to environmental issues. Our

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES LATEST INFORMATION U.S., Brazil To Cooperate on Climate Change, May 21, 2004 Bush Vows to Restore, Improve, Protect U.S. Wetlands, April 22, 2004 [...] Wetlands have been called the nurseries of life, and their well-being is vital to the health of our environment. Three decades ago, the United States was losing almost 500,000 acres of wetlands each year. Americans understood that couldn't be sustained, and so the nation began to take action. Every level of government, joined by landowners and conservationists, worked hard to turn the situation around. In other words, it took a collaborative effort of people who cared about the environment. Tellus conducts an extensive research program on issues related to global climate change, such as greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and scenarios, greenhouse gas mitigation assessment, capacity building in developing countries, greenhouse gas externality and co-benefits valuation, and carbon tax studies. Our projects feature the development, application, and dissemination of appropriate, state-of-the art computer models, such as PoleStar, EXMOD, WastePlan, and others. Tellus and SEI-B staff have worked for numerous agencies in the U.S. and abroad on carbon taxes, externality adders, and other policy mechanisms to address climate change concerns. Selected Projects
