Article covers quality, categories and types, controls, daylighting, maintenance, and optimizing efficiency.

Lighting With Energy Efficiency In Mind
Printable PDF Version (4 pages) Lighting technologies developed in the past 10 years can help us cut lighting costs 30% to 60% while enhancing lighting quality and reducing environmental impacts. To save lighting energy you can lower wattage, reduce the light's on-time, use daylight, and perform simple maintenance tasks. In addition, a design that recognizes what tasks will occur in a given area and sizing the lighting to that task will maximize the energy dollars. Whether using general energy cost cutting measures or designing the lighting specifically for a given area, it is important to consider the quality of the light, which can affect the level of comfort.
Light Quality
Light quality affects how well people can see to do visual tasks and how visually comfortable they feel. Light quality is important to energy efficiency because spaces with higher quality lighting need less illumination. High-quality lighting is fairly uniform in brightness and has no glare.
Categories of Lighting
There are three categories of lighting you must consider in planning:
  • Ambient lighting provides security and safety, as well as general illumination for doing daily activities.

Transportable fuels
... Table: Fuel usage efficiency
There are constant, ill-informed debates and reports that suggest that we can easily replace our fossil fuel usage by wind, or solar cell power, or some such method. Within current technology, this is a pipe-dream, it is impossible, it simply cannot be done. This does not mean that we are all dooooooooomed; but we are faced with a tremendous problem as reserves of fossil fuel, especially cheap pumpable oil, diminish. See World oil resources table for details.
There is a similar table for coal resources . As you will see, even with known coal resources, the current situation is not nearly as critical as it is for oil. This is probably an under-estimate of coal reserves, as the pressure to find new reserves has, so far, been considerably less than the pressures posed by oil depletion.
  • Fossil fuels are filthy.

    Welcome to Planet-Era
Planet-Era is a non-profit technology transfer institute dedicated to innovation and public education in sustainable development and self-sufficiency. We are actively engaged in research and experimental development of cost-effective energy efficiency for homes, businesses, and farms. Planet-Era develops affordable solutions, sustainable technologies, and alternative practices in construction, including use of unconventional materials and methods. Our motto is "Keep It Simple and Save (KISS)." We practice a never-ending quest for excellence in the design and use of appropriate technologies. Each innovation has four design goals:
    • simplicity minimal cost maximum performance common, easy-to-find materials.
Mankind's three primal concerns are food, shelter and clothing. At Planet-Era, we are building an innovative shelter near Montreal called the Wentworth Project. This addresses these three needs, by including a space for growing food, and a workspace for sewing if the occupants wish it, and/or working from home to buy their food and clothing. Planet-Era Action Inc. is incorporated in Canada as a non-profit organisation and is registered under Article 149 of the Income Tax Act as an educational institution.

Elements of an Energy Efficient House
Designing and building an energy-efficient home that conforms to the many considerations faced by home builders can be a challenge. However, any house style can be made to require relatively minimal amounts of energy to heat and cool, and be comfortable and healthy. It's easier now to get your architect and builder to use improved designs and construction methods. Even though there are many different design options available, they all have several things in common: a high R-value, tightly sealed thermal envelope; controlled ventilation; and lower than usual heating and cooling bills. Some designs are more expensive to build than others, but none of them need to be extremely expensive to construct. Recent technological improvements in building elements and construction techniques, and heating, ventilation, and cooling systems, allow most modern energy saving ideas to be seamlessly integrated into any type of house design without sacrificing comfort, health, or aesthetics. The following is a discussion of the major elements of energy-efficient home design and construction systems. The EREC has other, more specific information on these topics available. The Thermal Envelope A "thermal envelope" is everything about the house that serves to shield the living space from the outdoors. It includes the wall and roof assemblies, insulation, windows, doors, finishes, weather-stripping, and air/vapor retarders. Specific items to consider in these areas are described below.

Fighting for Clean Power Since 1990
The Clean Power Campaign is a non-profit organization of environmental and public interest groups, renewable energy providers, green energy marketers and energy efficiency technology companies. Our organization was founded in 1990 in Sacramento to promote increased electric system reliance on sustainable use of energy resources. In the area of energy, we focus on policies to increase renewable energy, encourage conservation and energy efficiency and make the most sustainable use of conventional power sources such as natural gas. We have expanded the focus of our work over the course of the last decade to include combating global warming, reducing petroleum dependence and expanding the availability of clean transportation solutions. We have worked on a broad range of legislative and regulatory initiatives in these areas.
The Clean Power Campaign receives its funding exclusively from environmentalists and private sources interested in clean energy solutions.

Energy Quest for Kids Appliance Information CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION Appliances today are smarter and more energy efficient than ever before thanks to California's appliance efficiency standards that went into effect in 1977. We depend on our appliances day in and day out. They cool and heat our homes, keep our food from spoiling, clean our dishes and laundry, and cook our food. It's important to remember that there can be significant differences in the energy consumption of appliances. It depends on an appliance's age, whether it was designed before or after the standards went into effect, or the efficiency level of the model. For instance, the amount of energy used to run one 1977 model refrigerator can power three 1998 models! Check here for some appliance tips for consumers California's appliance standards have done far more than improve the operation and efficiency of refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and other appliances. They're also protecting our environment by helping reduce the need for new power plants (and their associated emissions) or from direct combustion home appliances such as gas furnaces and water heaters. In addition, they help consumers and businesses save money.
