101. Brookhaven 1958 Video Game - DOE Research And Development (R&D) Accomplishments
The first video game may have been developed at the department of energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1958. William Higinbotham designed Tennis for Two for a laboratory visitors day.
http://www.osti.gov/accomplishments/videogame.html
Video games capture the rapt attention of millions of children and adults. U.S. annual shipments more than doubled from 69 million in 1996 to 159 million in 1998.* During this time, U.S. sales increased from 3.6 billion dollars to 6.2 billion dollars.* In 1996 video games represented 2% of toy shipments and 15% of sales dollars. By 1998 it grew to 4% of toy shipments and 22% of sales dollars. Total world sales dollars increased from 9.3 billion dollars in 1996 to 14.2 billion dollars in 1998.*
The following account, written in 1981, tells how a Department of Energy research and development program led to the pioneering development of video games.
*Source: Toy Manufacturers of America, Inc. New York, NY
William Higinbotham In 1958, William Higinbotham, then head of BNL's Instrumentation Division, designed what may have been one of the first video games. Back then, Brookhaven had visitors days in the fall, and thousands of people came to tour the Lab and see exhibits set up in the gymnasium. Higinbotham's game was an illustration of what the Instrumentation Division could design and build. It was wildly successful, and Higinbotham could tell from the crowd reaction that he had designed something very special. "But if I had realized just how significant it was, I would have taken out a patent and the U.S. government would own it!" he said.

All DOE employees, contractors, and grantees must be mindful of the importance of protecting the rights and welfare of human subject research volunteers. In a world of rapidly advancing medical technology, revolutionary genetics research, and ever-increasing threats to personal privacy, the protection of human subjects in research is paramount. All research conducted at DOE, supported with DOE funds, or performed by DOE employees, including classified and proprietary, must comply with Federal regulations and DOE Orders to protect human subjects.

  • Life Sciences: Characterize the multi protein complexes (or the lack thereof) involving a scientifically significant fraction of a microbe's proteins. Develop computational models to direct the use and design of microbial communities to clean up waste, sequester carbon, or produce hydrogen. Climate Change Research: Environmental Remediation: Develop science-based solutions for cleanup and long-term monitoring of DOE contaminated sites. By 2013, a significant fraction of DOE's long-term stewardship sites will employ advanced biology-based clean up solutions and science-based monitors.

Accident Investigation Program
Accident Investigation Program A primary mission of the Department of Energy (DOE) is to operate its programs and facilities with a high level of safety. The accident investigation process has been designed to meet Departmental safety objectives by responding to accidents in a highly coordinated, timely, and focused manner. Preventing accidents and reducing lost time and fatalities due to accidents are line management responsibilities. However, the accident investigation program provides useful and timely information to managers within the DOE complex in an efficient manner so they can use the information to improve their programs. The objectives of the accident investigation program are to prescribe requirements for conducting investigations that will assist line management in meeting its responsibilities to:

Fiji Department of Energy VISION:
INTRODUCTION The Department of Energy and Rural Electrification Unit (DOE/REU) has in the past years strived to achieve its goals and this year proves no different. In 2002 DOE/REU is challenged to perform with an increase in its budgetary allocation. The DOE/REU is optimistic that an increase in its budget will bring the country closer to achieving its vision for a resource efficient, cost effective and environmentally sustainable energy sector. The Department has attempted to achieve these through the following programmes; Energy Information and Database
Renewable Energy Development Plan

Global Environment Facility

Petroleum and Transport
...
Rural Electrification

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Department of Energy (DOE), which is part of the Ministry of Works and Energy was established in 1981. It has played a major role in reducing Fiji's reliance on petroleum fuels and sustaining Fiji's energy sector. The DOE promotes energy efficiency practices thus reducing energy costs through programmes such as energy conservation, renewable energy resource development and fuel substitution.

Due to concerns about the lack of exploration activity in Papua New Guinea, particularly in the drilling of exploration wells, and the projected steep decline in oil production from the existing Kutubu, Gobe and Moran oil fields over the period 2003-2010, the Government has introduced special fiscal terms that are to provide an incentive to the industry to explore. Those special terms are styled as "incentive rate petroleum operations".
