'Every Day' Activities Across the Curriculum
"Every day" reinforcement of basic reading, listening, math, vocabulary, and geography skills can go a long way toward ensuring that kids learn and retain the skills you teach. You're sure to see the results of daily reinforcement in end-of-year test results too! Included: Education World highlights a couple dozen Web sites that are perfect resources for developing activities to reinforce needed skills on a daily basis! One of my last years as a classroom teacher opened my eyes to the value of daily skills reinforcement. That year, all third graders in the school system I taught in were tested in the spring. The third graders were first given a test to determine their abilities, then a battery of skills tests. The skills test scores were compared with ability test scores to determine whether students were working up to their ability levels. When the results came in, my class was the only third-grade class in the school system (we're talking more than 30 third-grade classes in a mid-size Connecticut city) in which

    • Aim: to get enough food and not get eaten yourself. Split the children between the other organisms, with more children lower down the food chain, e.g. 16 snails, 8 toads, 4 hedgehogs, 2 foxes. The bases are safe, so they can return there with their food. Then start again with the organisms still living. The winner is the one who is left living last.
    b) (easy) All the children run around until the teacher shouts out one of the names, e.g. "toad!",(or, to get them thinking, "what eats the common snail?!") they all have to reach that organism, the last pupils there are out. Continue until there’s only one person left. Curriculum links KS2 Sc2 section 5 (living things in their environment) particularly d and e (food chains).

    CUSTARD GONE CRAZY
Why Does it Behave Like That?
The custard powder + water mixture is a mixture of solid particles suspended in a liquid, called a colloid. When you move the mix around slowly the custard powder particles can move around in the water quite freely, and so it acts as a liquid. When you move the mix faster or hold it in your hand tightly, the solid particles rub against each other causing friction. This makes them stick together and act like a solid.

Teach your family healthy eating habits Food
Teaching healthy eating practices early will help children approach eating with the right attitude - that food should be enjoyed and is necessary for growth, development, and for energy to keep the body running. The best way to begin is to learn more about children's nutritional needs by reading or talking with a health professional and then to offer them some healthy options, allowing your children to choose what and how much they eat. Parents should try not to set children apart because of their weight, but focus on gradually changing their family's physical activity and eating habits. Family involvement helps to teach everyone healthy habits and does not single out the overweight child. Children become overweight for a variety of reasons. The most common causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. In rare cases, a medical problem, such as an endocrine disorder, may cause a child to become overweight. Your physician can perform a careful physical exam and some blood tests, if necessary, to rule out this type of problem. Breakfast fills your "empty tank" to get you going after a long night without food. And it can help you do better work. Easy to prepare breakfasts include cold cereal with fruit and low-fat milk, whole-wheat toast with butter, yogurt with fruit, and light snacks. It is easy to fit physical activities into your daily routine. Walk, bike or jog to see friends. Take a 10-minute activity break every hour while you read or watch TV. Climb stairs instead of taking an escalator or elevator. Try to do these things for a total of 30 minutes every day. Snacks are a great way to refuel. Choose snacks from different food groups - a glass of low-fat milk, biscuits, an apple or banana, butter and raisins, or some dry cereal. If you eat smart at other meals, cookies, chips and candy are ok for occasional snacking.

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT ENGAGING THE SPIRIT
Teaching our children about spirituality is one of the responsibilities that comes with parenthood. The usual way we deal with this responsibility is to relegate it to churches, mosques, temples, and synagogues. We're reluctant to embark on the journey of spiritual matters because we feel we don't know enough about it ourselves. Yet, learning about spirituality starts at home whether it's something you do intentionally or unintentionally. Engaging the spirit has little to do with religious leaders, buildings, credos, icons, rituals, and services. It has much more to do with recognizing that we are all human embodiments of the energy that created usthat we are all connected. Spiritual matters include learning about and honoring ourselves and each other, recognizing that we all have access to the power of love , listening to and following our inner guidance, seeking truth, and living in the present moment. Teaching your children about spirituality is a continuous experience. The process of engaging the spirit can be effortless if we gently move with patience and openness. It requires that we let go of expectations and preconceived notions about how spiritual teachings unfold. It also requires that we stretch and move out of our familiar comfort zones. We learn and teach best through example. Here's what you can do to join your children on the journey of engaging the Spirit.

The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate to the biology student that the cell is not a static object. It is a complex functioning unit carrying on those activities necessary for life. This unit will emphasize the role of nucleic acids (RNA and DNA) and cell organelles within the cell as interrelated cooperating and functioning components dependent upon one another for the survival of the whole. OBJECTIVES:
The students will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of cell interactions such as DNA replication, protein synthesis (transcription and translation), through active participation in a cooperative group. CURRICULUM SEQUENCE:
This unit will follow the unit in which the students have learned the structures and functions of the cell organelles and cell dynamics. This unit will include instruction in DNA replication, transcription, and translation. The test at the end of the unit will be one in which the students become a living working cell within the confines of the classroom.

LAWS AGAINST CONSENSUAL ACTIVITIES TEACH IRRESPONSIBILITY
If you want a Big Brother, you get all that comes with it. ERICH FROMM
    Escape from Freedom
IRRESPONSIBILITY IS AS old as mankind—literally. When God asked Adam, "Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" Adam answered, "The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." Note the dual layer of irresponsibility: Adam blames not only Eve, he also blames God for putting her with him. Irresponsibility is as old as womankind, too. After God heard Adam's rational lies, he turned to Eve and asked, "What is this you have done?" And Eve responded, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." (Modern translation: "The devil made me do it!") It seems that the buck never stops in Eden. It's amazing that the serpent didn't blame its upbringing, claim it was high on drugs, or simply plead insanity. At the very least, the serpent could have argued that it was only following its religious beliefs. But responsible or not, God punished them all, and so here we all are today. Did you ever notice how disarming it is when people take responsibility and how irritating it is when they blame? If people spent half as much mental energy finding a way to keep an unfortunate occurrence from happening again as they spend on finding reasons why (a) what happened wasn't so bad, or (b) "It wasn't my fault," the world would be a lot better off.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans were first published in 1980 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The 1995 edition continues the focus on making food choices that promote health and prevent disease. The guidelines are considered appropriate for all Americans over two years old. Weight Guidelines The dietary guideline for weight emphasizes balancing the amount of food eaten with activity. Maintaining weight also is emphasized as important. What about children and weight control? Children need enough food for proper growth. When planning food choices for overweight children, consult a health professional such as a registered dietitian for help. Food Choices: Children should eat grain products; vegetables; fruits; low-fat milk products and other calcium-rich foods; and beans, lean meats, poultry, fish, or other protein-rich foods. Fats and sweets should be used only in moderation. Activity: Teach children to participate in vigorous activities that will balance energy intake. Limit television time and other low energy activities and encourage active play in a safe environment.

Using the Child's Environment To Teach at Home and School. ERIC/CSMEE Digest.
The world of a child is the tangible, real world of the here and now. It is difficult for children to extend ideas from the small, familiar world in which they operate to the larger, abstract world beyond. Even adults envision distant parts of the world based on their own experiences and prior learning. Nevertheless, the global concepts of environmental education, the basic principles of ecology, and the importance of environmental responsibility can be instilled in a child without reference to faraway places. These ideas can all be made concrete right where the child lives and goes to school.
    BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ECOLOGY
One of the fundamental tenets of ecology is that all activities have by-products. In environmental education, it is understood that this tenet applies to all activities of nature, both natural and human-induced. Some of these by-products are called "pollution." Though pollution tends to have a negative connotation, not all pollution necessarily affects the environment adversely (Botkin and Keller, 1982). Ivan Illich, an environmental philosopher, suggests that most of the problems of humans and the environment are a consequence of a society originally designed to protect people from the environment, improve their material circumstances, and enhance their freedom (Gardels and Snell, 1990). Yet, to be good for humans, the environment must be compatible with the unchangeable needs of human nature. Because people are relatively unable to adjust biologically to nature, we must change our immediate environment instead (Dubos, 1971).

    http://www.treetures.com/Stewardteach.html
Steward: Steward is a Street Treeture. He cares for and protects urban street trees Background:
Changes in environment can be natural or influenced by humans. Some changes are good, some are bad, and some are neither good nor bad. Pollution is a change in the environment that can influence the health, survival, or activities of organisms, including humans.
Trees, especially large deciduous shade trees, provide cooling shade during the warmer months of the year. Shade trees cool homes, office buildings, sidewalks, parking lots and many other urban and rural locations. We all understand how much cooler we feel sitting under a tree versus the hot sun on the sidewalk; however, just how much that tree can cool the air is a surprise to many of us. The temperature under a medium-sized tree is at least 3 to 4 percent cooler than the air around or above the tree. In fact, well-placed trees can reduce the need for air conditioning in a home or building by as much as 30 percent. This reduced need for artificial cooling produces a domino effect: reduced need for air conditioning less energy needed to run the air conditioner less fossil fuels needed (oil, coal) to fuel the air conditioner less pollutants created by the burning and mining of these fuels.
Awareness of the need to find a balance between urban development and a healthy urban ecosystem is important to our well being. The creation of heat islands can be a danger to our physical, psychological and economical health. A heat island is a term that refers to mostly urban areas with few trees and green areas. A large percent of the earth is covered in cement and asphalt. Trees and greenery can drastically reduce summer temperatures and minimize the "heat island effect."
