Endodontics deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the dental pulp and periapical tissues. The goal of endodontic treatment is to change the internally infected tooth to an inert viable state so that it may continue to function as an integrated unit in the overall masticatory apparatus. Principles of Endodontics I. An introductory course in endodontics defines procedures necessary for conventional treatment. Students develop the psychomotor skills required for patient treatment by carrying out simulated procedures in the laboratory. Principles of Endodontics II.

The CAGS in endodontics is designed to meet the formal educational standards of the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation and prepare the resident for successful completion of board certification by the American Board of Endodontics. Intensive training is given in clinical endodontics and correlated basic and medical sciences, and in other dental subjects related to the practice of endodontics. Supervised clinical training encompasses both surgical and nonsurgical endodontics, ensuring clinical proficiency in these areas. Extensive opportunities exist for combined treatment of endodontic-periodontic problems and for endodontic management of teeth involved in major oral rehabilitative procedures.
All students must be prepared to meet the scholarly requirements that familiarize them with the development of endodontic theory and practice and permit intelligent evaluation of current techniques.

On-Line CDE course on the FibreFill Endodontic Obturation System
* * To register and view the On-Line Webcast, please click here A "virtual hands-on" CE course on the FibreFill Endodontic Obturation System was broadcast live from the University of Toronto, on March 29, 2003. This CDE course included a presentation and demonstration of a new endodontic obturation system. Participants who had previously obtained a FibreFill Obturation System reproduced the hands-on component in the privacy of their own office and forwarded images of their work via email attachment for comments by the presenters. The FibreFill System is comprised of a novel resin sealer and gutta-percha tipped fiber-post obturators. Enhanced sealing of the root canal system as well as root strengthening are some of the benefits of this system. A video of a root canal obturation as well as the available scientific research was presented. Participants included Dr. Martin Trope and Dr. Larry Lopez. Dr.Trope is JB Freedland Professor in the Department of Endodontics at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. Dr. Lopez is in private practice in San Antonio Texas with an emphasis on Esthethics and TMJ dysfunction. The session was moderated by Dr. Fred Barnett, Associate Professor, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia.

Figure 1. SurgiTel FLM Loupes with fibre optic headlight and halogen light source box. It is not until I stopped and considered how we practiced endodontics 15-20 years ago that I realised how much has changed over those years. Like a parent who does not notice the gradual changes in their child as time goes by, so I find myself sitting in my high-tech, state-of-the-art surgery, wondering when it all happened. Advances in electronic measuring devices, magnification, radiography, preparation and obturating instruments, now enable us to work with greater accuracy, efficiency and predictability; successfully treating teeth once considered to be hopeless.
It is useful to subdivide the equipment now available for the discerning endodontic practitioner into two groups. Firstly, instrumentation that requires major shifts in the working paradigm (and often expenditure), and, secondly, those that are evolutionary products of current methodology.

Cariology, Restorative Sciences, and Endodontics is the study of the pathogenesis and prevention of one of the most common diseases known to man dental caries. In order for this disease to develop it needs a susceptible host, a cariogenic bacterial flora and the bacteria need a substrate (usually refined carbohydrates) which can be metabolized to produce acid. It is these acids which cause the demineralization of the hard tissue of the teeth - enamel, dentin and cementum. This demineralization and later bacterial invasion of the hard tissue will cause, without intervention, the pulp of the tooth to be infected. The result is loss of vitality and perhaps extraction of the tooth. Understanding the etiology, treatment and prevention of this multifactorial disease defines the clinical and scientific parameters of Cariology. Endodontics is the branch of dentistry which is concerned with the morphology, physiology, and pathology of the human dental pulp and periradicular tissues. Its study and practice encompass the basic clinical sciences, including the biology of the normal pulp; the etiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the pulp; and associated periradicular conditions. Skills will be developed to enable the graduate to diagnose, provide nonsurgical conventional treatment, and evaluate healing in uncomplicated single and multicanaled teeth. A familiarity with the entire scope of the specialty of endodontics will be developed to provide a basis for referral of the more complex nonsurgical and surgical cases to a specialist for further diagnosis and/or treatment.

ENDODONTIC - PERIODONTAL LESIONS
The endodontium and periodontium are closely related and diseases of one tissue may lead to secondary diseases in the other. The differential diagnosis of endodontic and periodontal diseases can sometimes be difficult but it is of vital importance to make a correct diagnosis so that the appropriate treatment can be provided.
E ndodontic-periodontal lesions have been classified by various authors according to the primary cause of disease. A typical classification, based on the primary disease with a secondary effect, is as follows:
a) Primary endodontic lesion with drainage through the periodontal ligament - a deep narrow probing defect is noted on just one aspect of the tooth root. This is usually a draining sinus originating from an infected root canal system.
