Welcome to the Malaysian Endodontic Society Website The Malaysian Endodontic Society is the official organisation in Malaysia for dental surgeons interested in the practice of endodontics. It aims to promote and advance the study and practice of pulp conservation and endodontic procedures in order to improve dental services to the public. It is an affiliate of the Malaysian Dental Association and a member of the Asian Pacific Endodontic Confederation. The Society organises activities at regular intervals throughout the year to promote and update the practice of endodontics. These take the form of lectures, seminars, workshops or short courses on current trends and promote the exchange of ideas. Members also get to keep in touch with each other in a friendly social atmosphere. The highlight is the Annual Scientific Meeting which is usually held in the third quarter of the year. Research training is fully integrated into the program and can lead to a Master of Science degree awarded by the Medical College of Georgia (MCG). Upon successful completion of training, residents will be awarded certificates of completion and the skill identifier 63E9C by the Office of The Surgeon General of the US Army. The program is fully accredited by the Council on Accreditation of the American Dental Association and its graduates are recognized as qualified to take the examination of the American Board of Endodontics. Go to Top Purpose of the Program The purpose of this program is to train selected dental officers in all aspects of Endodontics. The resident will learn the background sciences and develop the clinical experience necessary to select those techniques which meet the biological, physiological, and mechanical requirements for oral rehabilitation. The clinical aspect will require attention to detail, precision, and perfection of various techniques. The interrelation of other clinical specialties with Endodontics is also emphasized. The didactic phase will be presented through formal courses, staff lectures, consultant visits, hospital conferences, library research, literature reviews and seminars.

Abstract Root perforations are significant complications of endodontic treatment. However, when teeth are of strategic value, perforation repair is clearly indicated. The successful utilization and placement of a subgingival resin-ionomer restoration to repair an endodontic root perforation is demonstrated. Sustained tissue health and minimal probing depths at the surgical site demonstrate clinical success. ENDODONTIC FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The one-year full time fellowship position in endodontics will start when the summer term begins (usually the last week in June). This is primarily a teaching position that provides excellent on-the-job training in endodontics. The usual school holidays and vacation policy for "Fellows" and "Residents" will be followed. the fellow will begin the two year Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics (Endodontic Residency) on July 1st one year later. The one-year Fellowship in Endodontics is a key position in the Undergraduate Endodonitc Clinic and the Urgent Care clinic. This teaching experience is important for endodontists that may be interested in eventually seeking a teaching appointment. Clinic hours are relatively short, but can be intense and require the clinic instructors to be alert and immediately available. Dr. Tinkle (Undergraduate Endodontic Clinic Coordinator) will provide the schedule for assignment to the Undergraduate Endodontic Clinic and for "interdepartmental Consultations." Dr. Baumgartner will coordinate a schedule for coverage of the Urgent Care Clinic with Dr. Clinton (Associate Dean & Chairman Clinic Support Services).

General Description
The goal of the Advanced Education Program in Endodontics is to graduate residents who can practice the specialty of endodontics and teach the discipline. They will also be able to participate in research and be motivated to include service to the disadvantaged in their careers.
The Advanced Education Program in Endodontics selects highly motivated candidates to receive two years of extensive clinical and biomedical education together with experience in teaching and research. The program is funded by a GME grant; therefore, eligible residents receive a stipend during their residency. In addition the College provides full-tuition scholarship to those eligible. The program accepts 12 residents a year and has a total of 24 enrolled in the program. The program has consistently attracted outstanding candidates. Didactic Program The didactic portion of the program consists of basic science and departmental courses. The departmental instruction includes textbook review (first year), theory and practice of endodontics (first and second years), literature review (first and second years), endodontic surgery, and an extensive number of basic sciences. Written or oral examinations are conducted in all courses. The didactic portion of the program emphasizes the biological basis of endodontics.

About Endodontics: Endodontic Retreatment
Endodontic treatment is extremely successful, but occassionaly the tooth will fail to heal or will develop new problems. In this case a second endodontic procedure may be recommended to save the tooth.
What is involved in this procedure?

What is an endodontist?

Will I feel pain during or after the procedure?

Will my tooth need special care afterwards?
...
Are there alternatives to endodontic retreatment?

What is involved in this procedure? Step 1: The endodontist will remove any materials previously used to seal the tooth, such as a crown, post, or canal filling. Step 2: Your endodontist will clean the root canals and attempt to find any extraordinary canals that may be present. Step 3: After treating the cause of the problem the endodontist will then fill and seal the canals. Afterwards you will need to make an appointment with your dentist to have a crown or other restoration placed on your tooth to restore it to full function. What is an endodontist?

About Endodontics: Endodontic Surgery
When conventional root canal treatment cannot be done or has not been successful then a surgical root canal procedure may need to be performed. Surgery may be done to check the end of a tooth's root for cracks, remove parts of a root that could not be adequately sealed during conventional root canal treatment, or to clear up an infection that has not healed after conventional treatment.

What is an endodontist?

Will I feel pain during or after the procedure?

Will my tooth need special care afterwards?
...
Are there alternatives to endodontic surgery?

What is involved in this procedure? There are many surgical procedures that your endodontist is trained to perform. The most common procedure is an apicoectomy. During an apicoectomy the endodontist will drill a hole in the top, or enamel, of your tooth to give access to your root canals and the pulp inside them. The pulp, a soft tissue needed when your tooth is developing but not needed once the tooth is fully grown, will be removed. A substance called gutta-percha will then be used to fill the root canals. A filling may be used to close the hole in your tooth. The endodontist will then make a small cut in the gum tissue near the tooth. They will use specialized instruments to remove any infected or inflamed tissue and to remove the end of the root. A suture or stitching will be used to close the incision and the tissue and incision will eventually heal over the next several months.
