Endangered Species Management on Private Lands-Funding Sources Several federal agencies have programs that specifically provide money for management of endangered species on private lands or have general wildlife habitat enhancement programs in which landowners willing to manage endangered species on their property are more likely to receive funding. Please contact the nearest Arkansas Game and Fish Commission regional office and ask for a Private Lands Biologist who will be able to provide more information on these programs. edangered species both in the UIUC library system and on the Web Introduction Endangered species are plants or animals "in danger of extinction within the foreseeable future" throughout all or a significant portion of its natural geographical habitat. Federal legislation determines which species will be classified as "endangered" and thereby protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. In addition to the endangered species classification, there is also a federally legislated classification of threatened species which denotes all species "likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future." As you can probably guess, there is an overwhelming amount of information available on endangered and threatened species. Narrowing your research to a specific topic will dramatically improve your chances of finding meaningful information suitable for a research project. Consider researching a specific species of endangered plants or animals, endangered or threatened species of a particular geographical region, or perhaps even the potential causes behind the endangerment of plant and animal species. Rules Protecting Endangered Species Endanger Defense Readiness Instead by Dana Joel Gattuso "Our new radar - it's a remarkable scientific achievement capable of spotting an intruder in the air at quite a long range... But we can't get permission to put her up [on top of the mountain from] the National Park Service... The Wildlife Preservation Society is raising hell too."
    - from the 1970 movie "Tora, Tora, Tora."
The very idea that laws protecting fish and fowl can stand in the way of military readiness and threaten our national defense reads something like a Hollywood drama. Yet this plot is playing out today on U.S. military bases, hampering the training of our armed forces - and at a particularly crucial time for national military preparedness. According to the Pentagon, federal regulations governing endangered species are the number one obstacle facing defense-training efforts. As the government continues to designate more land for "critical habitat," subject to protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), a disturbingly large and growing amount of U.S. military property is off-limits to training and weapons testing. Consider:

    http://www.wii.com/ESA.htm
As the Endangered Species Act matures, Willamette continues efforts to protect and enhance wildlife habitat. The 1973 Endangered Species Act, administered by the Interior Department's Fish and Wildlife Service, is an aggressive effort to conserve threatened and endangered plants and animals by determining their status and providing for their recovery. Willamette has always been a good steward of the environment, but passage of the ESA and the listing of forest-dwelling species has compelled the company to pay greater attention to forest practices. "Prior to facing ESA issues, only minor consideration was given to wildlife," says Jim James, Willamette's general manager for Western Timber and Logging, who joined the company a year before enactment of the ESA. "Under Willamette's normal practices, beneficial wildlife habitat was maintained by accident — not by design. It just so happened that the patchwork harvest strategy used by Willamette created a diversity of habitat conditions, promoting a variety of forest wildlife species." Even so, James says Willamette gives wildlife issues greater attention than it did previously. One of the ways the company has done that is by hiring wildlife biologists to help address ESA issues and make recommendations on how the company operates.
