As the Endangered Species Act matures, Willamette continues efforts to protect and enhance wildlife habitat. The 1973 Endangered Species Act, administered by the Interior Department's Fish and Wildlife Service, is an aggressive effort to conserve threatened and endangered plants and animals by determining their status and providing for their recovery. Willamette has always been a good steward of the environment, but passage of the ESA and the listing of forest-dwelling species has compelled the company to pay greater attention to forest practices. "Prior to facing ESA issues, only minor consideration was given to wildlife," says Jim James, Willamette's general manager for Western Timber and Logging, who joined the company a year before enactment of the ESA. "Under Willamette's normal practices, beneficial wildlife habitat was maintained by accident — not by design. It just so happened that the patchwork harvest strategy used by Willamette created a diversity of habitat conditions, promoting a variety of forest wildlife species." Even so, James says Willamette gives wildlife issues greater attention than it did previously. One of the ways the company has done that is by hiring wildlife biologists to help address ESA issues and make recommendations on how the company operates.
