William Stead, the son of a Congregational minister, was born in Embleton in 1849. William spent his childhood at Howden, about five miles from Newcastle . Educated at home by his father, William grew up with strong views on religion. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to a merchant but this failed to interest him and he eventually became a journalist.
In 1871 he moved to Darlington where he became editor of the Northern Echo . Stead was a strict Puritan who favoured social reform. He declared soon after becoming editor of the newspaper, "the Press is the greatest agency for influencing public opinion in the world" and that "the true and only lever by which thrones and governments could be shaken and the masses of the people raised".
Stead successfully made the Northern Echo the most influential voice of Nonconformity in the North of England. His newspaper supported several causes and organisations, including universal education, votes for women, repeal of the

Katharine Conway , the daughter of the Samuel Conway and Amy Curling, was born on 25th September, 1867. Her father was a Congregational parson in Ongar, Essex, but when Katharine was a child the family moved to Walthamstow. The Conways held progressive views and Katharine received an education equivalent to that of her brothers. After being educated at home by her mother until the age of ten, Katharine went to the Hackney Downs High School for Girls.
Amy Conway died in 1881 after giving birth to her seventh child. This was a devastating blow as Katharine was very close to her mother. The situation was made worse by her father's decision to remarry a woman that Katharine did not like.
At the age of nineteen, Katharine began her studies at

In 1785 John Walter's career as a Lloyd's underwriter in London was at an end. An increase in insurance claims arising from a hurricane in Jamaica had ruined his business. Close to bankruptcy, John Walter decided to look for a new form of business. While an underwriter at Lloyds he became aware of a new method of typesetting called logography. The inventor, Henry Johnson, claimed that this new method of typesetting was faster and more accurate because it allowed more than one letter to be set at a time. John Walter purchased Johnson's patent and decided to start a printing company.
    John Walter
came to the conclusion that he had to find a good way of publicizing his logography system. Eventually he came up with the idea of producing a daily advertising sheet. The first edition of the

The first edition of the Sheffield Register was published in Sheffield by Joseph Gales on 9th June 1787. Gales pioneered the idea of a newspaper which gave extensive coverage to local issues while reporting on major national stories. Unlike most provincial newspapers, the Sheffield Register did not rely on copying articles that had first appeared in London journals.
    Joseph Gales
attempted to educate his readers. He published extracts from the work of radical reformers such as Tom Paine William Godwin Joseph Priestley Richard Price and John Horne Tooke in the newspaper. In 1792 Gales began producing the fortnightly

The Leeds Times was founded by four businessmen in March 1833. Within a year Frederick Hobson had taken full control of the newspaper. The politics of the paper was middle-class radical although it did attract some working-class readers. By the summer of 1837 the Leeds Times was selling 3,500 copies a week. However, circulation of the newspaper fell when the Chartist newspaper, the Northern Star , appeared at the end of 1837.
In the first six years the Leeds Times had four editors. In 1838 Samuel Smiles was invited to become editor. Smiles decided to abandon his career as a doctor and to become a full-time worker for the cause of political change. In the
