John Stuart Mill, the eldest son of the philosopher, James Mill , was born in London on 20th May, 1806. Educated a home by his father, John Stuart had studied the works of Aristotle, Hobbes, Plato, Jeremy Bentham , Ricardo and Adam Smith by the time he had reached the age of twelve.
Mill was especially impressed by the work of Jeremy Bentham . He agreed with Bentham when he argued in Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation (1789), that the proper objective of all conduct and legislation is "the greatest happiness of the greatest number". Mill became a Utilitarian and at the age of seventeen formed a discussion group called the Utilitarian Society
Mill also began having articles published in the Westminster Review , a journal founded by Jeremy Bentham and James Mill to propagate Radical views. John Stuart Mill also wrote for other newspapers and journals including the

    Introduction
This guide is intended as an introduction to reference sources at Perkins Library for the study of Russian literature. The emphasis is on recent English language materials, and the list is by no means comprehensive. Students should use the materials in this guide as a starting point for more in-depth research; almost all works included here contain excellent bibliographies of valuable publications in Russian, English, and other languages. Duke student access to information is not limited to holdings here on campus; materials not held by Perkins are often available from other university libraries through Inter-Library Loan. The University of North Carolina, North Carolina Central University, and North Carolina State University catalogs are all directly accessible through the online catalog, and Duke students enjoy borrowing privileges at each of these libraries as well. In addition, information is increasingly available via the Internet and various document delivery services. Check with a reference librarian for suggestions on how best to access the materials you need. Part One of this guide lists research tools of use to students of all types of literature, including general dictionaries of literary terms, encyclopedias, and indices for book reviews and biographical information on authors.

(DEFRA) have produced two comprehensive online encyclopedias. The Encyclopedia of the Atmospheric Environment (developed in 2000) is now a well established and recognised online resource on atmospheric pollution and related issues, with over 400 topics and 100 accompaying photos, figures and charts. It has received over 30 Internet awards for design and content and has been judged by Air Quality Management as the best non-local authority air quality website in the UK. Encyclopedia of the Atmospheric Environment The Encyclopedia of Sustainable Development (developed in 2001) deals specifically with the principles and concepts of sustainability not covered by the Encyclopedia of the Atmospheric Environment. With over 100 separate topics, the encyclopedia helps to deconstruct into a more user-friendly format many of the ideas which the UK Sustainable Development Strategy and the Sustainable Development Education Panel have addressed for the purposes of sustainable development education. Encyclopedia of Sustainable Development Both Encyclopedias are aimed at the layperson as well as the education sector, although the concepts dealt with in the Encyclopedia of Sustainable Development may be hard to grasp for pre-Key Stage 4.

    ENCYCLOPEDIAS
Knowledge is power, if you know it about the right person. Ethel Watts Mumford Encyclopedias are a basic information source in every library, so much so that they are often taken for granted and overlooked. It is important, therefore, that each librarian become familiar with the encyclopedias in their collection and the types of information they have. Although works resembling encyclopedias were known as far back as ancient Greece, a Frenchman named Denis Diderot (1713-1784) is generally regarded as the father of the modern encyclopedia. In his work, entitled ENCYCLOPEDIA , he defined his purpose in preparing his encyclopedia: "The aim of the encyclopedia is to gather together the knowledge scattered over the face of the earth, to set forth its general plan to the men with whom we live, and transmit it to the men who will come after us, in order that the labors of past centuries may not have been in vain." These words still ring very true today, as the purpose of encyclopedias remains to gather information from many diverse sources and present it in a comprehensible and easy-to-use format. Encyclopedias can be roughly divided into two basic types, namely general and specialized. We will discuss the latter very briefly, as a small library will probably have few if any encyclopedias of this type.
