The Haitian Revolution Introduction Scope Key to Locations Subject Headings ... Contact Me
Edouard Jean. Toussaint Dirige Vers la Bataille "In overthrowing me, you have cut only the trunk of the tree of liberty. It will spring again from the roots for they are numerous and deep." Toussaint L'Ouverture, 1802 INTRODUCTION In August 1791, a massive slave uprising erupted in the French colony Saint-Domingue, now known as Haiti. The rebellion was ignited by a Vodou service organized by Boukman, a Vodou houngan (High Priest). Historians stamp this revolt as the most celebrated event that launched the 13-year revolution which culminated in the independence of Haiti in 1804. In the 18th century, Saint-Domingue became France's wealthiest producing colony. The wealth came from a plantation system based on the labor of black slaves, imported from Africa. Recipients of the wealth were mainly French planters and gens de couleur of African and French descent. The third and fourth positions of the stratified class system were filled by a small amount of middle class whites (artisans, merchants, shop keepers) and a lesser number of lower class whites (mechanics, overseers, sailors and soldiers). Ranking last were about 500,000 black slaves, outnumbering all others by about ten to one. At the time of the slave uprising, the colony was in a melee with several revolutionary movements brewing simultaneously. The planters were moving toward independence from France, the free people of color wanted full citizenship, and the slaves wanted freedom. All were largely inspired by the French Revolution of 1789 with its call for liberty and equality.

James Wroe was born in Bradford in 1788. Wroe was a woolcomber and after moving to Manchester became involved in local politics. In 1818 Wroe helped John Knight Joseph Johnson and John Saxton to start the radical newspaper, the Manchester Observer . James Wroe became the newspaper's first editor and within twelve months it was selling 4,000 copies a week. Although it started as a local paper, by 1819 it was sold in most of the large towns and cities in Britain. Henry Hunt called the Manchester Observer "the only newspaper in England that I know, fairly and honestly devoted to such reform as would give the people their whole rights."

Britannica recently announced that it was going to require payment to view anything beyond the first few paragraphs of their articles. It was predictable that it would do so, eventually, particularly after the technology stock bubble burst. "The economics of the all-free model has changed," said Britannica spokesman Tom Panelas says in the AP story. Gone are the halcyon days of free content. Au contraire that's only what Britannica wants you to think. The grandest days of free content have not yet begun. Britannica and other proprietary encyclopedias will be hopelessly obsolete within ten yearssmall, out-of-date, and generally irrelevantby comparison with Nupedia, Wikipedia, and the many other non-proprietary reference works that are being and will be developed. This is a dramatic claim, but an interesting and surprising case can be made for it. How open content projects can keep high quality encyclopedic content free It is now hackneyed, but still perfectly sound, to argue that good content online will always be free. Even a small number of producers of excellent content will satisfy most of the demand, due to the ease of Internet distribution. So the price of content will stay low, if the law of supply and demand is to be trusted. In other words, if someone charges others for premium content, users, not being stupid, will look elsewhere for comparable content. In all likelihood, they will find it, simply because the number of Internet content-producers is huge. An academic, a hobbyist, a journalist, or some other person will want to educate the public. Like everyone, they have a natural desire to communicate and teach.

Joseph Gales was born in Eckington, Derbyshire in 1761. He was apprenticed as a printer in Newark and in 1784 moved to Sheffield where he started a publishing business. Soon after arriving in the town Gales became a Unitarian. This resulted in Gales joining the campaign to end the political disabilities of dissenters. Gales also supported Radical Whigs in the House of Commons , such as Charles Grey and Richard Sheridan , who were advocating parliamentary reform.
Gales met Tom Paine who inspired him to start publishing his own radical newspaper. The first edition of the
