http://www.lung.ca/diseases/emphysema.html
Emphysema is not curable, but it can be treated. Those who have it can be helped to live with it. It is a destructive disease for thousands of Canadians and their families. Over 1100 people die of it as a major cause each year. Something can be done about emphysema today. Who gets Emphysema? Persons with emphysema are, for the most part, males between 50 and 70 years old. Women get emphysema, too, but so far, not as often as men. However these statistics are changing as women are starting to smoke more, and at an earlier age. A very high percentage of the people who have emphysema smoke cigarettes and have been heavy smokers for many years. Frequently, they live in areas where air pollution is a constant problem. Some people are born with a lack of a substance called alpha-1 antitrypsin. This makes them more likely than others to get emphysema and at an earlier age. How it Attacks A person with emphysema doesn’t develop the disease suddenly. It comes on gradually. He or she has probably had several very bad colds each winter for the past few years, each accompanied by a heavy cough, and often with chronic bronchitis. The cough often persists between colds and becomes chronic. The thing that usually brings the patient to the doctor is that he or she has begun to feel short of breath on exertion in morning or evening or both. The patient may think he or she has asthma or heart disease.

Study finds removing part of lungs helps some emphysema patients
(AP) A risky surgery to remove part of the damaged lungs of emphysema patients appears to at least temporarily improve their ability to breathe, walk and lead more normal lives, a small study found. While a few thousand people with severe emphysema have had the operation and reported substantial improvement, Medicare and private insurers won't pay for it without proof it works better than standard medical care.

Casper attorney chose his own 'final exit' By MATTHEW VAN DUSEN Star-Tribune staff writer For years, Jim Fagan talked to friends and family about choosing the time and means of his own death. The Casper attorney believed both politically and personally in an individual's right to die, family members say, and on Wednesday morning, he took his own life.
"He believed that this was one of those things that people had the right to do," said Lita Fagan, Jim's ex-wife.
Fagan, who was 76, suffered from emphysema, a progressive lung disease that causes breathlessness, and also had artificial hips that prevented him from walking. Lita Fagan said his quality of life had decreased considerably and he did not want to go to a nursing home.
He talked to his family at length about the decision and toward the end of his life, Lita Fagan recalled, "He said, 'I want out. I want out.'"

Now red wine can help the lungs
Heather Catchpole ABC Science Online
Wednesday, 29 October 2003
Chemicals in red wine could be the next treatment for chronic lung disease. Faquier County, Virginia Trawling the wine cellar for potential cures for human ailments in the same way we search tropical rainforests and oceans for useful drugs has yielded a new treatment for chronic lung disease.
Researchers from Imperial College, London have reported in the British Medical Journal that resveratrol, a component of red wine, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help treat a common type of lung disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an irreversible condition where the lungs progressively deteriorate, making it difficult to breathe. The term is used to describe the airflow obstruction that is associated mainly with emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
The major risk factor for COPD is smoking and the only way to slow the disease is to stop smoking, use asthma medication and get some good old fashioned exercise.
Now researchers have found that resveratrol, a polyphenol antioxidant found in the skins of red fruits such as grapes, may suppress the disease.

Emphysema
Emphysema is a disease characterized by dilation of the alveolar spaces and destruction of the alveolar walls. With their loss, much of the elastic recoil of the lung is also lost. Compliance of the lung in emphysema is significantly above normal; the lung becomes easy to distend but empties slowly. This results in a chronically overinflated lung (high total lung capacity, functional residual capacity, and residual volume), which lessens the curvature of the diaphragm, making it less efficient in generating even the small swings in pleural pressure necessary for breathing. Pulmonary function tests on a patient with emphysema will reveal a compromised expiratory flow (due to their low lung recoil), including a low FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC ratio.
