The Gist of Emergency Medicine was written for oral board candidates, practicing physicians, residents, interns and medical students. It is meant to compliment standard texts and oral board courses. It is also designed to refresh and reinforce the "trouble-shooting neuronal synapses" of the emergency room physician and as a brief reference in the ER. Hello there! I hope you find the downloads of the " Gist " useful. The book represents many hundreds of hours over the past several years and I am hoping that others derive some benefit from my "hobby". Current opinion on how long muscles can tolerate ischemia is based solely on extrapolations from tourniquet models. According to these models, muscles can tolerate up to 3 hours of ischemia before developing necrosis, and some authors suggest that muscles can tolerate up to 6-8 hours of ischemia. However, tourniquet-induced ischemia may differ from compartment syndrome-induced ischemia. In animal research, ultra structural degeneration in canine skeletal muscle was more common and more severe in experimental ACS compared to that produced by tourniquet-induced ischemia.

    Description
    Faculty ... DOC Protocols
    Emergency Medicine Residency Program
The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Texas Houston Medical School is proud of its commitment to clinical and educational excellence, academic rigor, and superior service. We believe that emergency medicine is best taught by emergency physicians and best learned in the emergency department. To that end, our curriculum emphasizes emergency department experiences coupled with carefully selected rotations intended to augment the resident's skills. Even our PGY-1 level residents spend fully half of their year in the department working side by side with our upper level residents and faculty. As hard as we have worked to make our curriculum strong and effective, it remains a work in progress. We constantly evaluate the program to insure that we continue to meet the needs of the next generation of emergency physicians. Much of this evaluation is based upon feedback from our residents. We believe that they are the best source of information regarding the effectiveness of our program. We are also proud of our outstanding faculty, which includes several winners of our medical school's Dean's Teaching Excellence award and one winner (our program director) of the ACEP national teaching award. Though many of these individuals are fine researchers and administrators they are all first and foremost superior clinician-educators. Our primary focus is the training of emergency medicine residents. When a resident completes our program we believe that he or she is prepared to practice in any emergency department, anywhere. This preparation includes not only superior clinical skills, but also the interpersonal skills critical to the effective practice of emergency medicine.
