Home Embroidery Machine Reference Chart Please use this chart to help you determine the format you need for your machine and the maximum design size you can sew. Designs larger than the maximum size allowed for a format will be missing in that format. Thus, even if you purchase a pack with 5x7 inch designs, you will not find them in .sew format. Also, some machines limit the number of color changes or the number of stitches. It is often possible to use your embroidery software to split larger designs; check with your dealer before making a design purchase. Please check design sizes carefully before purchase. Just before reading this section I was working with my wife on PC-Designer, an embroidery machine digitizing program. We were taking simple patterns and with rotation and displacement, created complex and interesting patterns. I was wondering if you could create a 2D automaton from an embroidery machine. Start in the middle (or edge?) of the hoop with the anchor stitch, then place 3 more stitches, each move being to one of the eight surrounding 'cells'. (cross-stitch anyone?) Kind of like a 'drunkard's walk, but not random. The location of the NEXT stitch could depend in some way on the placement of the last 3 stitches. What kind of interesting, yet stitchable, patterns might result from what sort of rules?

Smocking by embroidery machine
Posted by rushingseams My Page ) on Mon, Apr 5, 04 at 4:28 When I first started thinking about trying it, what I saw was using the decorative stitches on the machines over pleated fabric. Now there is a source for the designs in the formats for the embroidery machine. You gotta know, pleating is new to me too. I ran a couple of pieces of fabric through when I first got the pleater. They were awful. Very crooked. Follow-Up Postings:
RE: Smocking by embroidery machine
Funny you should post this. Just this weekend I was reading about machine smocking. I did all my girl's clothes by hand and really enjoyed it, but now that they are in college, I don't have much call to smock. HOWEVER, there will be grandbabies someday ( not TOO soon) and I was thinking this might be a great way to smock on clothing that can stand the rigors of machine washing? Please post, I would love to see it!!

talk I'm getting. I have looked at some... Husqvarna...it
is too high priced here so its out..there is a Bernina..

would like one that is pretty trouble free as it will be

RE: Embroidery machines
Hi. Not sure how much I can help, but this has been my experience: Husqvarna and Bernia are wonder machines, but high priced and accessories are also very high. Janome is a workhorse of a sewing machine, but some say it's embroidery is not as refined as others. I originally looked at the Janome for myself, but was steered to the Babylock- (dealer handled both) I bought the Babylock Esante and love it. Can't say I know anyone with Singer so can't comment there. I think the most important thing is to find a dealer you are comfortable with, who offers classes and has a good warranty program. Make sure you have a chance to actually "sew" on the machines yourself- you'd be surprised how one may just seem to "feel right". Good Luck.

from Creative Machine Embroidery Did You Know?: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions by CME Editor Annette Bailey and Contributing Editor Jeanine Twigg
Need help in downloading and using designs? Read through our list of Frequently Asked Questions for answers to common problems.
Downloading When I open my design, it looks like characters and numbers on the screen.
This is the result of opening the design file in the wrong software packageone that your computer chooses. You must have embroidery software loaded on your computer in order to view downloaded embroidery designs. For best results, when the option is available to "open" or "save" downloadable designs, always choose "SAVE" to download designs onto your computer. Then open the saved design in embroidery software. I can't locate the design I just downloaded on my computer. My embroidery machine format is not one of the available download options. Why? Sometimes you'll discover that not all embroidery machine formats are available for downloading off the Internet. This could be due to the design size or the conversion capabilities of the software in which the design was digitized. It is important to know and recognize the design size limitations of your equipment. Just because you have a larger hoop doesn't always mean you can embroider designs larger than 4" square. Most professional digitizing companies know what sizes different machine formats can open and embroider. Therefore, if a design is oversized, there are some machine formats that the design cannot be saved in, due to size restrictions.
